View Full Version : my G37S review

Friend gave me keys to her G37S & I got to play with it.
Impression:
The front looks awkward, the side and rear line is hot with the chrome 19s. Interior is a billion times cooler then mine, and better then the 3 series even without the technolgy package. Seats are quite comfy, headroom is non existant, I was driving the car fast so I sat in racing position really up front, my head was touching the roof the whole time im 6', but it was quite comfortable. With casual driving position I won't have that problem.. other then drivers over 6'2. My 6'6 friends fit in my ms3 no problem, i don't think they'd fit in the infiniti. The stereo sounds much better & visibilty is comparable to ms3.
Driving:
The engine & exhaust note is HOT. It has a racey note and its loud outside. When I rev the car a lot of people look, its not like the low rumble MS3 has which nobody from more then 3 feet away hears. I drove the 5AT, this tranny with pedal shifter is awesome, I wish my ms3 had DSG !!! I can put my 2 hands on the wheel at full time when turning, so much easier to control then MT. The car rides a little softer then ms3. The cornering speed on this car is lower then my ms3, stability control gets in the way too early. Its on RE050 too same tires as my car. Steering is a bit more communicative then MS3, same effort but it provides more feedback, easier to tell whats going on at the wheels. It has less grip then MS3 in corners but stiff balanced chassis + RWD + LSD = flys out of corners I don't need to say more. The powerband on the car is good, it doesn't have the tractor trailer pulling torque ms3 has from 2000-4000rpm, but after that the G takes off all the way to mid 7000rpm.
Speed: It's Quick, a lot quicker then an older 350z 6MT I drove a month ago. I raced my friend who drove my car, I pulled 2 cars on her from 30-140 (funny i've never taken my own car past 130) She didn't bang the gears but still... I was clearly pulling away revving my VQ engine to 7600rpm. When I gave the G back to her and went back into my own car, I drove it quite hard, its definately a bit slower & a thousand times more laggy. I'm not sure if it feels like 330hp but a stock ms3 don't stand much chance against this thing.
Price: MSRP is $50000 on the car & the car's computer with 900km is reading 15L/100km after I drove the crap out of it. Its a expensive & fun machine, in the US this car goes for $36k. I don't feel so bad about my car after knowing it cost almost 2x as much.

Good review...you've just found your freelance gig!
Flappy paddles has their advantages...keeping both handds on wheels can definitely make up for a slower tranny...of course not the case with the highend DSG units...
I like how you have fast...female friends...who drive their car and knows how to drive stick... ;)
So what was her impressions on your car?

Nice review, but I would never compare a G37 to an MS3.....they're totally different cars geared for a totally different market. The G37 is a RWD luxury sports coupe while the MS3 is a FWD pocket rocket (read really fast economy car).
Both cars are great in their individual segments IMO.

I now put forward a motion to have silvermist99 removed from the MS3 owners society, have his MS3 impounded, and never again be allowed to sully our hallowed halls.

I think the older generation exterior looks better. The newer one just seems awkward and flabby, but I guess a refresh is nice! :chuckle

The other 04 350z 6MT I drove is owned by a girl too. My girlfriends have pretty quick cars & most know how to drive stick hehe. A lot of them ended up with autos because they didn't feel like waiting months for stickshift.:loco
So what was her impressions on your car?
She has a 09 C280 & the G37 was actually one of her friend's. She likes my car's stiff ride, sensitive throttle, drony exhaust note. She loves my car & its performance to value ratio, but finds it a little hardcore for a daily driver. Only negative comment she said was my car looks beat up, doesnt look like a new car with 3000 mile compare to her premium cars :whoa :bang

I am definitely comparing apples to oranges here. I wrote a review on this one because its one of the few cars I recently tested that actually impressed me overall. I've driven many new cars lately, TL, SLK, C, 3 series, tsx, impreza, civic si, A3, gti, rx8. There is probably more that I don't remember, but none of them really appealed to me.
The technology & performance of this car for what it cost really impressed me. I know infinitis can be bought thousands under MSRP which will put the cost of this car a little bit over $10000 then MS3. If I didn't need the utility I would have definitely considered paying $10-15k more for this car.
The SLK350 I played with is $70000 out the door, its boring, slow and no features compare to the G37. 3 Series has gauges, climate control & radio off something from the 90s, there is nothing to play with in that care unless you go with the annoying i-drive which is $$$$$. I know the 335i can smoke almost anything but the interior doesn't appeal to me.
TL, C-Class, turns like a noodle, they are very high tech inside but there is something missing when driving these cars.
Civic SI, impreza, gti, tsx. These cars don't have MS3 acceleration. My friend's impreza 2.5 n/a with sport packaged ended up costing $1000 more then my MS3 out the door, definitely not worth it IMO and that hatch's trunk is smaller then the SLK's :loco

the MS3 tranny is handful when racing! It slows me down, every time i have to brake real hard I have to remember to hold onto 2nd gear or it pops out, the 2-3 gear grinds if I twitch the engine too much (when cornering hard on bumpy road, & accelerating). Can't get into 1st smoothly without double clutching out of slow slow corners. If this car is available in DSG... I'd definitely have gotten the auto lol <3 Driving the G37, my left foot was on the dead pedal, right foot slamming on the brake, both hands on the wheel and pulled the downshift pedal twice, perfect rev match downshift and off I go again out of the corner. That being said if i was to get a G37, I'll probably get it in MT form, the flappy pedal respond is not as quick as vw/audi DSG.

:chuckle Yea, I'm sure CARS is what you're talking about....
And I must say that I REALLY like the new styling of the G37... I think it looks f'n slick.

STI is different story though.
An STI with full Cobb solution will walk over almost anything on the road and I think it is truly worth it... if I can afford it.
Well even on stock it can walk over quite many things...

My buddy just bought an '07 STi... I don't know how far it has gone with it, but it's been COBB tuned. Thing flies like shit... No way it's in the same class as an MS3.
I was referring to 2008 STIs. 2007s, I could compare that to MS3.

thats why i hardly drive my car & don't see much point in modding in as long as it works.... I just drive other people's car lol. I will see if i can get some of the girls to run their ride on track days... but most of them work on weekends.

it won't walk a 135/335i, chip +oil cooler+ turboback.. thats like 400hp & torque ~ :chuckle

stock ms3 and stock STI is very comparable in accleration/braking/cornering. The only advantage I see is coming out of corner traction. Modded forget it, sti can get easily add a few hundred hp without blowing up. The done up ones are real fast, i have seen them in action and it makes my car look like a corolla.

Oh, ok, that makes sense. He bought it already modded, so I have no experience in a stock STi... My buddy apparently got it with almost 300 HP at the wheels. He hasn't confirmed this on his own, but all I know is that it's ridiculous.
