So, I've basically decided to get an IPhone.

Now up until now I've never had a personal cell phone, just work (day job) ones which I've never had to worry about pricing. I currently have a Blackberry for that, which I'm happy with, but need an additional phone for personal stuff.

Here's what I need, tell me what's my best bet for company and plan:

1) Unlimited evenings and weekends (the earlier the better)
2) The 6GB data plan special.
3) Probably around 250 - 350 daytime minutes in/out.
4) Call forwarding, so I don't eat into those daytime minutes.
5) Voice mail and call display would be nice.
6) Minimum number of text messages, probably only 50 or so per month.

The Rogers and Fido pages do their best to confuse potential customer, so maybe you guys can help me figure out what's best for what I need and how much I can expect to pay monthly.

Thanks in advance

[EDIT] Forgot to mention, I also need it to work with multiple POP email accounts, can the IPhone do this natively or do I need an additional program, and do Rogers/Fido charge extra for this?

i believe rogers requires you to take a $30 data/iphone plan, with regards to call forwarding you get charged for the minutes that you use your phone on call forward.

there are wirless essentials that incld call display, conference calling call frwd, call wtg, voice mail and txt msgs. i think the $11/12 wireless essential bundle will cover it

Yes Rogers currently has the promotional $30 data plan for the iPhone that is good until Aug 31st. After that, rates jump up. I'm sure you are aware that this is separate from the wireless/voice plan that you intend to get. That pretty much depends on your preferences and the features that you want included in the account. Me i'm with a corporate account, and was told that we can't even get an iPhone. The only way we can get one is if we get a set up a regular account. Regarding POP3 accounts, not answering coz i'm not sure :chuckle but I would think since it's a 3G smartphone it would come with program which will enable you to check your POP3 emails. So get the $30 data plan and have the sales guy lay out all the plans for you so you can choose which one best suits your requirement :)

For other users, what I'm sure is if you're with a company that uses MS Exchange 2007 as your mail server, it will communicate with the iPhone using Activesync.

....with regards to call forwarding you get charged for the minutes that you use your phone on call forward....

Can someone confirm this? This does not sound right. If it is, then it's completely screwed.

Call forwarding is an option you can add on to your plan. It includes 2500 call forwarding minutes for $3 a month. without it, it's $0.20 per minute. some plans include call forwarding.

As per http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-plans/essentials?content10=call_forwarding&setLanguage=en&setProvince=ON

thats what i am planning. i have cityfido plan right now, i just need to add a data plan on top. so if you can still find a cityfido plan, that will be best. the total will be $100/mon tax in.

Of course. Fido is owned by Rogers, so technically it's pretty much the same company.

1 - I have unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 6pm.
2 - I have the 6gb for $30 but after 3 months when it is $30 for 300mb that is more than I'll need. I picked mine up friday at 8pm the day it was launched and since then I've only used 24.3mb of data/email combined. Under settings on the iphone it says your data usage and you can reset it when your billing cycle is.
3 - I have 200 daytime minutes.
4 - I would only forward if you have to... it eats up airtime.
5 - I have the visual voice mail / 2500 txt / etc $15 a month.
6 - I have mine hooked up to 3 pop email acct's. No program. It is built in and easy to setup. Won't cost you anything. Part of apple mail.

So to recap.
(1+3) $25 + (2) $30 + (5) $15 = 70 + taxes & $6.95 fee. I was paying the same for my bb so it isn't a big deal for me.

The phone is way nicer than my old bb8700r.

So b are you saying that in #2 the 6gb is only good for 3 months then it reverts back to $30 for 300 mb?

I thought that wasn't the case. Wasn't it supposed to be a limited "promotional data plan"?

http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-plans/essentials?content10=call_forwarding#start

this is a link that gives you the details of call fowarding (closer to the botom). $3 will get you 2500 min but as the fine print states that some plans include it. I think the best option is to call rogers or visit a sales centre

As far as I know it is only good for 3 months. If they extended it... great!

So correct me if I'm wrong...So for those that sign up for 3 yrs and get the 6gb promo, 3 months into your contract, your data plan will revert back to 300mb( sorta like free voicemail for 3 months then you have to pay for it afterwards)

Damn, if that's the case, I'm sure there are going to be some really pissed off customers when the 3 months is up. I thought it would be this price for as long as you got in on the plan before the deadline.

from what i understand is that you must have an iPhone voice & data plan starting @ 60$ (link) (http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/iphone_voice_data_packages) or go with a regular voice plan and sign up for a data plan $30 for 300MB data plan, but if you sign up before Aug 31st you get the $100 plan @ a promotional price of $30/mnth for the length of your contract (3yrs) (cancellation fee applies if you cancel prior to your contract end) (link) (http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/iphone_voice_data_packages)

This link (http://your.rogers.com/business/wireless/plans_services/business_plans.asp?plan=dataservice&cat=2&typ=2)may shed some light as well i am thinking about getting it for my HTC TyTN

jaM3ican is correct, the reason for the 6GB 30$ is b/c of the backlash for their initial plans and Rogers didnt want the release to be lackluster. So the promotional data is available until August if you sign up, it runs the length of the 3 yrs, if you buy an iphone after AUg 31st, you'll get 300mb or whatever for 30$

You CAN buy an iphone with no data plan
