An SUV driver struck and killed a pedestrian who was travelling diagonally across a Toronto intersection Monday morning, police said.

Police say they don't know why the victim, a 39-year-old male, was crossing from the southwest corner of Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue to the northeast corner.

The pedestrian was struck by an SUV travelling west on Steeles through a green light at about 3 a.m. said Toronto police traffic Sgt. Tim Burrows

Burrows said the police force called in two accident reconstruction teams to investigate the scene due to the large size of the intersection, located in north Toronto. He said no charges have been laid.

However, police are still looking for witnesses to the accident, including the drivers of two vehicles that were stopped at red lights on Yonge Street.

"We're wondering about why the driver didn't see the pedestrian and why the pedestrian decided to cross the street in such a bizarre manner," Burrows told CTV.ca on Monday.

Viva bus I was in detoured onto clark, hilda, and then steeles..
Took me about 45 minutes get to finch station which normally takes about 15 minutes.
When I got to Yonge and steeles, all direction on the intersection was blocked, and the fire truck was cleaning off blood from the street by spraying water..
