View Full Version : How to: Use the Mazda paint pen (pics)

This weekend, I had the overwhelming joy of trying to touch up some long scratches on my car. I purchased a 16W paint pen (Black Mica), and was happy that I was finally going to fix up the scratches that bothered me so much.

I decided to write up this little how-to about how to properly use the paint pen:

1. Find the paint pen. Notice you get your colour, plus the clear coat for once the paint has dried.

http://s4.tinypic.com/2zyymih.jpg

2. Place the paint pen in the garbage. Apply more force depending on level of frustration.

http://i38.tinypic.com/t6pj5k.jpg

3. Here is a picture of what the pen looks like in the garbage.

http://i38.tinypic.com/mjwmc2.jpg

4. Find something that works a lot better.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help. I just bought a pen and was getting ready to use it. Now I'm pretty confident I will do a good job.
Doh!

Thanks for the help. ... Now I'm pretty confident I will do a good job.

Yeah, it should be pretty easy now that there is a handy guide. Hard to mess up now IMO.

so did I, had to sand it down afterwards because it was all blotchy ... piece of crap ... has taken a couple of polishes to to get it smoothed out again after the sanding ... but still didn't fill the chips very well ... PIECE OF CRAP!!

I've got 2 chips right above the driver's door handle. Oh yes, 401 West to Kitchener sucks. It's been half a year and they STILL haven't repaved the pavement after they ripped it up :complain.

Besides the paint pen what else can I do?

Sorry, I'm a little confused and perhaps dense, but do you buy the garbage bags BEFORE or AFTER the paint pen??

LOL.. that was classic..

although, I used it on my car cause it had many horrible stone chips.. i'd use it, then use the clear, waited a day, then polished all the marks by hand.. it came out pretty good, you can't see unless your looking right at the spots..
its better right now than spending big $$$ to have it painted..
I'll hold out till next spring to have the front clip of the car re-painted..

D'oh!! bought one of those pens from my dealer a while back...don't have any chips on my car yet (and hopefully it will stay that way LOL!) but now I am concerned about using that thing if I ever have to!

I am thinking of getting the Clear Bra applied to the front of my car so that should help avoid the worst of the chips (I hope) :-(

ok i will admit those pens are crap, not having ever used them myself, ive heard terrible things. but what if you only have really small parts/sections that you just want to "touch-up" (which is ironically the name of the pen)?? will it still be adequate for that??

I used a Titanium Grey Mazda paint pen before and the colour match was way off. The bottled paint seems to work a lot better.

Kaval from Make it Shine recommended that I take the paint out of the pen and transfer it to a jar, and instead of the pen, use a match stick to blot the paint on the chip. This may not help for scratches but it should for chips. And I saw a post in another thread about the product "blob eliminator" that you can apply to the blob of paint. It's supposed to eliminate the extra paint and make the touch up flush with the original.

Everyone is complaining about this paint pen and I'll have to admit maybe it sucks (haven't tried it yet), but I think the method of using a match stick or toothpic seems to work quite well!, as Zoomette showed me her touch-up job on her car at the Lapaloma meet and I gotta say she did an awesome job and if I remember correctly she said she used a toothpick....By the way nice detail job Zoomette! :)

Amen to that. Looks beautiful with this procedure and is almost unnoticeable.

Gotta love this How-to. I came across it last year when searching for a way to fix chips. Bought the pen but before I got to fixing the chips, I destroyed the dog bone and passenger side rear door when I clipped a parking garage column. Thanks to this forum, I found Paint Circuit who has great colour match in a can. I got two and was able to fix the door and rear quarter panel. I will post pics if anyone is interested. It involves getting a dent puller (got mine at Harbor Freight for $99), some short strand fibreglass and regular bondo. Oops, not sure if this qualifies as highjacking a thread. As my unoriginal username suggests, I'm a noob to the forum world but don't count me out.

Sounds like you need to create your own How to. I'll be interested in the process of your repair. I would be scared shitless to do it though.

I'll make one when I get a chance. Some forum gurus will probably shoot it down for not being bondo-less.

Ouch.

I found a chunk of metal and paint missing from my passenger side door will which I am at a loss as to how it even happened. Thankfully its an area I don't care about so I just caked the area with paint using my so called Graphite Mica (38R) paint pen. Looks like shiiierrttttt.

studum
10-21-2014, 10:36 AM
I unscrew the tip of the paint pen and dip a tiny paint brush in and use that to touch up. Anyone who's ever built a model car or something similar will know the tiny-ness of the brush I'm talking about. Much more control than the pen itself.

staax
10-21-2014, 11:12 AM
Its not the level of difficulty to use the pen, its that the paint is never right. The 38R paint looks more like the 38P paint.

I used a paint pen on a few stone chips, worked out fairly well.... maybe your method of tossing it out didnt work so well.

The old ones are actually usable, the new ones are just a metal tip... Very similar to a real pen. Effective on paper. Useless on automobiles.
