Last night, I picked up my new 2008 Mazda3 Sport GS in Galaxy Grey (bought it from Gyro Mazda). I'm looking forward to a long-term relationship!

Quick question: Since I don't drive much (12 minutes to work), there's no way I'll put 8,000 kms on the car in four months. If I wait six months or so to do the first oil change (with maybe 3,000 kms logged), will I void my warranty?

I tried searching for this info, but I gave up. So many great posts to read!

That's what I thought - but the book says "whichever comes first," so I'm still not comfortable....

First oil change, I would be a bit more cautious. If I'm not mistaking, the oil that they use is not the same as a standard oil, and is not meant to be used for long term use.

Having said that, I just recall hearing that somewhere... I don't know where, and I have no idea if I just made that up... haha

They use olive oil so that the engine gets like wetsanded so it runs better afterwards!

AHAH - engine oil, people recommend changing it earlier on the first oil change so that the initial wear deposits are removed... this is not necessary, nor is it really needed.

Change the oil at 8000km or 4 months.*

* Which ever comes first.

Very simple.

Very simple.

It is, it just doesn't make sense if I have less than 3K on it. Changing the oil every four months is going to be a clear waste of time and money.

Not fun.

Think of it as milk in your car...

You either use it all (drive for 8K) and you need to buy more or it goes bad, and smells funky (4 months)

Either way, you should change it.

There are enthusiasts that ground the car for the winter in their garage, but before they do so, they change the oil.. and then in the spring before they put it back on the road, they change it again... 0km!

short driving (as in a 12 minute daily commute to work) is actually worse for the oil than some may think. if the oil doesn't get to a certain temp during that commute, moisture in it doesn't get a chance to burn off and is collected in the oil...that moisture becomes acidic and degrades the ability of the oil to both lubricate and clean the engine effectively by holding deposits in suspension.

in short, your 3,000kms in 6 months may actually be worse than someone driving 8,000kms in 4 months.

bottom line, it's your car do what you please...but if you're concerned about warranty (which you are since you asked a warranty related question), follow the recommended OCI and you should be fine if ever you need to have warranty work done at a dealer.

As mentioned, the time is as important as the mileage. Follow the recommendation and get it changed on schedule. It's not a waste.

My thanks to all for the input. I now know what I have to do....
