View Full Version : BMW Owner Changes His 3-Series Color From Black To White... With Tape

This BMW owner decided he'd like his BMW 335i to be white rather than black, so he found a shop to wrap his bimmer in 3M shiny white tape. OK, so paint jobs aren't exactly dead yet, but it seems more and more people are choosing to wrap their metal rather than have it re-sprayed. We guess this way, if he feels like changing it to another color, all he has to do is peel off the skin and apply a new one. And obviously, it also protects the original surface underneath, if he ever wants to go back to black. But what do you think?

Gotta be cheaper too.
He should of opted for a flat black finish or carbon fiber.

It funny and awesome!
Honestly, I think this sort of thing will grow BIG time. Look at the possibilities, photos or Photoshop art printed on the film or even painted directly on the car once applied - some with a photo of a full size Porsche wrapped around his old beater car!!

I've wanted to do this since I saw the one scene in Taxi where they unwrapped the getaway 7-Series from a metallic red to the original blue.

its common, really common, its just called vehicle wraps. its vinyl, not tape first of all. and its expensive vinyl, because its not your average sticker decal vinyl, its thicker and meant to be heated up to wrap around weird corners and door handles etc. most people dont just do plain vinly when doing a vehicle wrap though, they usually opt for a print, like have a company logo or something.
So would you still be able to wash & wax it to make it shine and bead rain?

Cool! Where can this be done in the GTA? what is the cost/price range?
It was in some movie starring Bruce Willis, i think, where he was chased by the cops then he went and sprayed the layer of paint and drove off with a different colour.

Why didn't he just order the car from the factory and just ask them to leave the protective white covering on the car instead of PDI just like my Avtar. :chuckle

interesting...looks like it came out well (at least from afar). Curious how much that would cost as well.

just wait till they take off the vinyl and see all the scratches from the blade. i wouldn't trust anyone with a knife within 5 fee of my car

Saw this on another forum also. Apparently one member of that forum priced out this process a few years ago and said in the US it would have cost him about $2K, so it hardly seems 'affordable', though still pretty cool.
At least the BMW owner came to his senses and realized that white rules all.
Cool, I would do it if the price was right :)

OMG! A full wrap of fake CF would be the ultimate in ghetto mods!!

2k+ for full wrap
You could wax it like you wax plastics
Vinyl protects the car and paint. In a case like this when he takes it off in 2-3 years his paint will look perfect.
I must agree that he may have a few blade cuts here and there.... just depends how professional it was done

Would that $2k be for the higher quality vinyl, too? Because if you're looking for a way to completely change the look of your car, that's not bad. I got quoted around 3k for a full paint job, so this would be a bit more affordable!

I would love to do this... but it's still not cheap

Yeah but keep in mind that a new paint job will colour all the interior pieces like the door jams, engine bay, etc.
The Bimmer above looks cool but how will it look when he/she opens the door?

Touche... Very good point. I guess it wouldn't look as slick with the doors open. But who opens doors, right?
