Anyone have info on the proper product/installation. I am considering installing a 3 point or 5 point harness but need to figure out the details. Anyone done this before? Am I the only crazy enough to do this?

Keep in mind this is a daily driven car. A roll cage is not on the menu any time soon.

you would have to do a brace behind the seat as far as i can tell and then anchor into the frame for the second part

having a 3 or 5 point harness without a roll cage is not a good idea.

if ever you were to roll the car and the roof were to cave in, you wouldn't have the mobility to lean over as you would with a regular seat belt. with no ability to get out of the way of a collapsing roof, you run the risk of breaking your neck and back and coming out either a quad, parapalegic or dead.

so, if you are thinking of getting a 3 or 5 point harness, a roll cage should be part and parcel with the package.

I have to agree with Majestic on this one. A 3 or 5 point harness is really only good for cars that a going to race regularly and have roll cages.

At a minimum you'd need the brace, which would limit usability in the rear of the car as well as front seat adjustability. And to be honest, they aren't very comfortable, and they make doing some tasks in the car harder, getting stuff out of the glove box for instance.

I am trying to stabilize my body inside the car. Roll cage is out of the question right now.
I was wondering if you could use underneath the back seat to brace the seatbelt?

Yep. Some good advice going around here. Sometimes what may seem like an improvement can really be a big step in the wrong direction. Be wary of the big picture you might not always see.

if you're looking to stabilize your body and thinking that a tight harness will do that, "baby seat" your seat belt by pulling it all the way until it clicks and then let it go. (see the beginning of MI:2)

again, this limits your mobility but achieves what you're looking for without going with a 3 or 5 point harness.

the instructors told me to get a seat belt clip that holds the belt in place, where the belt clicks into the buckle...I think they say you can grab it at CDN Tire or a race shops for like $10 - 20...lemme see if I can link you...

I don't think the driver's seatbelt does that. Does it?

looking into pricing for the cg-lock myself, when I came across this:

http://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php?p=1810307&postcount=10

"A seat belt lock for a child's car seat does the same thing for a couple of bucks. I've used one to keep my butt planted during autocrossing and it works fine.

Just head to the "Performance Driving", er, I mean car seat section of Toys R Us, Walmart, etc."

ya it works but been doing that for a bit now. I was told that it could damage the mechanism tho...

mleblond, I use a CG Lock!!! It holds you in place; at least it does your lower half. If you want to strap your torso, then you can do a torso strap/belt. Both these items are sold by autocross vendors online. I used to use the torso belt, but found it much better with just the CG Lock.

BTW CGLock is Canadian. They do (or at least did) sponsor CASC-OR Provincial Autoslalom Challenge and can be had through Wes T (series scorer) for $50 cash. I have one and highly recommend.

That said there's nothing like a race seat for holding you in. I intend to put a roll bar and race seat in the miata ASAP.

I've gotten an email back from CG Lock, and they'd do a GB for us for 10+ units for $50...

I guess it's best to just grab it from Wes at the next HADA...

Marsh: do we need to tell Wes in advance? Does it fit the 3?

CGLock does the bottom part of the belt but is less efficient than doing the lock your seat belt move...as that move will lock bottom and top....I would not waste 50$ on that....sorry

I haven't been able to get my belt to lock at all...after CSCS, I'm convinced I need to sit even closer and strap myself in...

lol does it lock when you yank it? if so then you need to back up more, lock it then move forward as far as possible...

Alright. I figured out an option: NRG Seat Belt Harness Bar

400$ + shipping

I wont get the roll cage. Not worth it and odds of me rolling are very slim...knock on wood.

Now figure out seats and harness...

How does this thing install? Right behind the front seats, between the B-pillars?

Haltech on MSF found the one Cobb uses on their TA/test car...$430 and it leaves your back seats somewhat functional...I'll see if I can link you...

The odds of you rolling the car in an autox are pretty slim indeed. I recommend never ever using the harness on the streets though.

Roll cages come with their own can of worms, as you either need to have oodles of padding on them or wear a helmet any time you're in the car. :)

It's already sold :( Rear seats become useless as per that guy.
