I was on the 400 going up to Muskoka when I saw this black monster coming up behind me. Talk about a sweet looking ride. I am really impressed with the look of the new Challenger. Pis could be better but here they are.

Its dodge lol, all it got is big numbers, people like them for its name. Its a monster on the road
BTW its 5 speed manumatic transmission, 425hp, 6.1L hemi V8, 0-100km/h in 5.2 sec
Also what I found interesting was the stereo system. Its 322w, 13 speakers with 200w subwoofer.
As well as 14.2 inch diameter rotors with 4 piston Brembos.

6 Speed is going to be available for the 2009 Model year (curent ones are 2008.5).
I gotta love the "hate dodge" crowd. Not only the 300's, Chargers, Magnum's, Challengers great cars, their made in my hometown of Brampton.

I like Chargers and Challengers myself.. they look nice and aggressive. And there's no disputing the Challenger SRT8's performance.
My wife wanted a Charger for a while, but they're rather impractical (fuel economy, storage space.. really big for a commuter). I think you can get much better cars for the price.
My parents nebour just got his a couple of weeks ago....it is am amzing car

100% ditto. I live 5mins from the Bramalea Plant, love seeing trailers full of them. Saw an orange one this morning on the 407 just before the 410 exit... had gunmetal rims w/ a chrome lip... holy sweet! And I too just love the instant knee-jerk hate towards anything "domestic".

I had a Chrysler 300 for several years as a company vehicle and my company uses Chargers as fleet cars now too. They may look ok but they're not built well. I could tell many horror stories that my coworkers and I have had with Chrysler products, including the Jeep Liberty which was the worst of them all.
Stay away from the 300, Charger and any other car built on the same platform. I think the Challenger shares much of the same underpinnings.
I saw an Orange one a while ago, and it looks wicked in person. I just wish they did something a little more with those taillights. I mean their going for the old school look but it can still use an update.

Got a ride in a Black R/T the other day, just some guy I seen at the gas station, started talking cars and he offered to show me what it could do!.....Holy Chit this thing crushes you into the seats, Ladymatic or not these cars are beasts, and I gotta say imo its one of the meanest looking cars out there.
I'd like to see one in the original OEM Purple, now that would be Hawt!

I'd be curious to know how the Challenger actually handles and how it reacts when you try and transmit all of that power to the road. American manufacturers for years, have only cared about big HP, large displacement and straight line performance. Most of them have less than desirable build quality and are totally shit track cars on any track where you need to turn, the Z06 and Viper excluded from this list.
This said, I do like the retro and aggressive look of the car.

lots of dodge hate here? i would of thought everyone would love this car. i think this is one of the nicest things dodge has ever built. it looks so similar to the 70s challanger, i love how they kept the image true to what it was. ive seen a bunch on the road lately. a few orange and a few black, the orange just looks amazing. interior is kinda lacking though, but outside i love it.

Really not liking the rear end. Also really don't like how Dodge comes out with these new retro cars (charger, challenger), using the name of their previous products just to try and make a few extra bucks off retiring baby boomers. But it's their names, they can do what they want with them. I'll never buy a Dodge so I don't have to worry about it, I guess.
I saw the exact one in Mississauga at my work. It was pretty nice.
we have one in for testing here at work
I have to say.. I like it. But my dad had a '71 when I was growing up that I remember riding in. So maybe I'm biased.
I'm hoping to get some better shots next week that will be going in the mag. These were just grabbed in our parking lot since it just came in yesterday.

This is as fitting an application of the name as there's ever been in the history of cars!! This is as fitting as the Camaro or the new Beetle.
I fully agree with you when it comes to crap like the Monte Carlo or countless other shameless name rehashes or even just putting an SS badge on a crappy Malibu with no actual performance... but in this case, I think the car can wear the badge with pride. It's a great name on a wicked car.
As for 4000 lb cars making turns... well... I know for sure they can turn left reasonably well and twice a year I enjoy watching them turn right a few times as well. :)

I saw one in Montreal yesterday on the Metropolitain highway. It looked nice, definitely stood out compared to all the other cars, but at the same time something seemed off about it? Can't put my finger on it but something about the body just seemed fake? Like instead of using metal it looks like they are using cheap plastic parts on it? Again, this was just a first impression I got while driving next to it and behind it so maybe when I get better look I may change my opinion.
alot of the flat black parts on it are plastic. Also the fake carbon vinyl they stick on it cheapens it a bit

There is no replacement for displacement...
I don't think they needed 6.1L to get 425hp, especially since thier own SRT4 makes 285hp with 2.4L, lol.
So lets calculate this.
6.1/2.4= 2.54
285hp*2.54=724hp
So now if that 6.1L V8 made 724hp and not 425hp, THEN I'd be impressed.
There are a couple replacements for displacement. Either turbo/supercharger, and proper tuning.
I just did the calculations, and even the 2L mazda 3 engine is tuned better than the 6.1L hemi in the SRT8.
6.1/2=3.05
152hp*3.05=463.6hp.
haha.

the common way to look at it is to calculate HP per litre. SRT8= 69hp per litre vs. 66hp for a mazda3. MS3 is 114hp per litre but you can't really compare FI to NA
alhope34
09-14-2008, 07:46 PM
The 2 litre mazda 3 engine is 76hp per litre. lol. The tuning of the 6.1 hemi really isn't amazing at all, especially for a performance car. To me it's just another over-sized, over-priced engine for an over-hyped car. But to each their own.
James, I got 69hp per litre for the 2.3 Mazda engine. Where did you get 66hp per litre?

2.0L is 148hp/2.0 = 74hp/L
2.3L is 156hp/2.3 = 67.8hp/L
alhope34
09-14-2008, 08:05 PM
Ok, I looked it up and I got my numbers a bit wrong. the 2.0 is 148hp, the 2.3 is 156hp.
2L = 74hp/L
2.3L = 67.8hp/L
My opinion still stands that 69hp/L is not something to be raving about for a performance NA engine.
Another example. The Japanese KLZE engine put in the 93-97 MX6 and 626 (2.5L V6) makes an even 200hp, making it 80hp/L. If Mazda can put that engine in cheap production cars in 1993, why can't Dodge make an equally tuned engine for their expensive car in 2008?

you are forgetting about torque
condor888000
09-14-2008, 08:09 PM
Because American companies are all about big engines which rev low.
The Mustang GT is 65hp/L while we're at this. Not very impressive in your terms.
alhope34
09-14-2008, 08:11 PM
What's the torque number on the 6.1?
The RX-8 and new Civic SI are pretty fast cars, and both have almost nothing for torque.
Call me closed minded or whatever, but there's honestly no convincing me this is a spectacular or even decent car.
condor888000
09-14-2008, 08:16 PM
And both the RX-8 and SI need to be kept on a boil to make ANY power.
Torque allows you to just surf the powerband, put the throttle down anytime and move the car.
alhope34
09-14-2008, 08:18 PM
But are both cheaper and use less gas when you dont need 425hp and 1200 torques.
Like I said a few posts ago, to each their own, but I just don't like or see a point to 6.1L engines. I would much rather get an FI 4 banger, which I DID get.

rode in it and wasn't impressed with how it felt.
considering how LARGE the vehicle is, it was really cramped inside.
The exhaust is not loud enough for the car.
overall.. it felt like a very plain car while riding in it.
this car is about Nostalgia though.. not truly about performance
and it doesn't matter what we all say about it.. they sold every single one they made (although they did keep the production numbers very low)

Saw one today on the 404 and got a good look at it as we were in the lanes next to each other for a good distane.
I like the aggressive look of the front end. The back of the car looks like my mother in law's ass. Way too big and clumsy.
Overall, the car left me very unimpressed visually. The Mustang Shelby and Cobra's have a nicer look than this car. Also felt that it looked a little cheap and that something was missing.
Frankly, don't see what all the hype is about.
