i recently brought my car into Airport Mazda and i asked them to check out my car. After about an hour i got a printout and it said that my rear brake pads were at 4mm. Should i change them right away or wait till i hear grinding just a little bit. they also pointed out that my left rear disc was rusting.

If you wait to hear the grinding noise you will have to replace the rotors or at least have them turned as the warning clip will have scored them. I would replace them BEFORE you hear the warning clip.
A little rust never hurt anyone but if you're concerned check this out...easy fix

the part where the pad makes contact with the rotor is rusting so there is a rubbing sound coming from the back when i apply the brakes

My personal oppinion is replace the rotors every time you do the brakes. Because shaving them down causes rotors to warp and you as the cx feeling vibrations in the pedal or the steering wheel will go back and they will charge you more to replace them then. As for the 4mm left that means your inner pad is worn even more in most cases. The inner pad is faster to wear since the piston pushes it out.

uh oh..sounds bad..i went for a price quote at Airport mazda and they said $388 for everything including labour. Is that reasonable?

I think that sounds reasonable because i think the last time i did brakes on my car i paid around 220 to 250 for rotors and pads and did the work myself. If you are comfortable tackling something like this yourself ask Joe aka Flipdaddy at MoT he will be able to hook you up with some better pricing

Don't wait til you hear that grinding! I think it's easier enough to do yourself to save some money.
