Yup, been on it a couple of times. It's a good trip of you're into the outdoors and the fall colours. When you get to the Canyon, you have time to do some trail walking, etc. before the return ride.
However, by mid-October, many of the leaves will have already fallen. In Northern Ontario, the leaves start changing earlier than here. Usually mid to late September is better to see the colours IMO. Are you driving or flying to the Sault? Hope that helps.

The info is perfect. Thanks. I will probably drive there. 850 kms. But now I have to decide going or not since u have said the change of leaf color is too late in mid october.
If I do go, my next info will be driving there and where to park the car for the CN to take us there and the hotel or motel around there.

No problem. I'm actually from the Sault and still go home around 5 or 6 times a year (Thanksgiving being one of them, that's how I know about the leaves). It usually takes me about 7 hours from Markham. Let me know and I can give you more information if you need it. Cheers.

I went on the train trip... I thought it was kind of a waste of time.
I do agree that mid-October is proabably a bit late to see the fall leaves change. It is really is weather dependant on how long they'll be on the trees. You can go the Algonquin website and they give a percentage of leaves changed.

I'm also from the Soo (go Greyhounds!) and have been on the fall colour train and it is quite spectacular. The leaves definitely change earlier up there - late September would be best, as already mentioned.
There aren't really any great hotels in town, but for the best location the Holiday Inn on the river would serve you well as it is close to the train station, boardwalk, locks, downtown and mall (not that you'll be going for the shopping :chuckle).
If you have an extra half a day, a drive to Hiawatha Conservation Area (only 15 minutes from town) is a fun trip. It is a little conservation area near to town that also displays some amazing colours in the fall. There are a few sets of waterfalls to explore as well. A local favorite, this.
Enjoy!

a friend of mine said that if we are lucky enough we might able to see the northern lights too, is that true??
