Over the weekend I bought 2 new LG LCD HD tv's for the house. As 32" & 26". I called Rogers to see what they could do for me and this is what I got:
2 HD PVR's - free for 1 year
1 SD terminal - free with package
Digital VIP Package
HD Specialty Channels - free for 1 year
Free installation
$42.99 + tax
Is this a wicked deal?

How long is that price good for? 1 year? And then how much? How long do you have to sign up for?
I am paying $70/month after taxes, and I don't have HD or movies! I am obviously getting hosed.

Pricing is for 1-year, they didnt mention any contract. I'm going to call them just before the 1-year is up and get another deal. It's all about the customer relations department...you have to threaten to cancel, in a nice way of couse. When I called, I said that Bell had offered a wicked deal and I wanted to stay with Rogers if they can earn my business. Bell never called me, I just said that to see what they would offer. If you dont get the deal you feel you should, tell them you are going to think about it and call back in a few hours.

Sounds like a great deal to me. Digital VIP is costing me about $60 +tax already, not including almost another $5 for the digital terminal.

Any of that as a result of promos from buying the TVs? When I bought my TV last year they included a year of Rogers digital... all I ended up paying for is the upcharge to get an HD box plus a few extra HD channels....

That deal sounds pretty good. I personally have two HD PVR's free for two years, and that's after having them free for one year. At the end of each term I just threaten to cancel and they renew the deal. I also have the HD specialty channel pack free of charge, though all other cable charges are standard. I've since gotten my parents the same deal, though they only have one PVR (don't need another one).

I had called in last night and the guy in retentions offered 2 pvr's free for 2 yrs, but no hd specialty channels...

Doesn't include HDMI cables... it comes with component cables though.

Are HDMI cable better then the component cable?

no visual difference, component is still capable of 1080p.
there is a audio difference, because with component you only get L/R chanel sound, that only affects you if you are connecting a home theater/receiver to your PVR.
I am sure people will jump all over this post to correct me as far as the "no visual difference" but unless you are an audiophile (which you arent because you are asking which is better) you wont notice the difference.
- this is also presuming your HD tv's are even capable of 1080p.

Oh and as far as the pricing, I'd say thats pretty good. I think I pay double that, because my year free preview of HD was over 2 years ago.

Very good deal!
I guess i should ask... is that in addition to whatever you currently pay? (if you have regular cable, internet etc...)

I currently have basic cable, internet & 2 phone lines which I pay $113/month. With the upgrade of the cable mentioned in my first post, my bill will be around $117/month for everything.
I love the customer relations department & red flag deals....lol

The other benefit to HDMI over component video + RCA audio is that you have far fewer cables to run. When I switched from comp. to HDMI I went from five cables to one which was much easier to run through walls!

TM3 sharing for the win!
Just called retention...didn't want to argue with Rogers today, so just tried my luck calling retention first thing when they opened...told the guy about this deal...hmm and ahh for a few minutes and bam:
Saved $24.95 + $8.95 = $33.90 off my cable bill...I just came off a two-yr promo for having a free HD PVR anyway...thanks guys! Good looking out as always! So not as good as the above deal, but around $50/mos since I get other discounts on the cable...
EDIT: This is a 1-yr deal, no contract...which means they'd like me to call back to chat again in a year...

Apparently this deal is just a promo that they have going on. I called one of their sales reps, and just asked for the best deal that they have... And they gave me this $42.xx deal for the VIP. Amazing what you can get if you just ask.
I also just threw out "Can I get free installation?" And she said "yup, that's no problem". Ask and you will probably get from Rogers.

keep in mind that the 1 HD PVR is 24.99 a month from Rogers...when this 1-year promo is over and you're paying for the terminal, you'll be paying a lot...

when it gets close to the 1 yr mark, you call them up and ask for another deal or threaten (in a nice way) to take your business elsewhere..lol

ah crap...I wish i had seen this sooner. I just signed on last week for the same package. I got the VIP package for $42.99 but i'm still paying full price for the HD PVR and the HD specialty package. I wonder if I could still get that if I call...
UPDATE: crap so I just got off the phone, and the rep tried applying the promo to give me the HD PVR free for a year, but said some crap about me setting this acct up online and that affecting the promo. Also said that I would apparently need to have a regular SD box, in addition to the HD PVR to get the PVR for free...LOL
I'm going to try and call back a little later.

Called them today as my wireless contract is up this week and I told them that I received a bundle offer from Bell so they immediately connected me to retentions. I already had the VIP package (with movies) so they took another $10 off my cable bill plus gave me the free HD PVR.They also took another $10 off my home phone and I wasn't even asking for that. I asked for all the U.S. HD channels too (which includes TSN) but they couldn't "give" that to me due to the discounts I already get. I'll call them back in a week and see if I can get more. But not bad overall as I'm saving an extra $20 plus getting the free HD PVR. And in a year, I'll call them back to extend it.
