Hockey Pool for 08-09 season?

Is anyone doing a hockey pool for this coming season? I would love to get in on one, and from what i remember from last year, there was a fair bit of talk about it. The season is just around the corner! I think we should get going on this. Anyone else want in?

Might as well start an interest thread. Either post your emails here, or PM them to me, and I'll start setting up a fantasy league. If we don't get to at least 8 people by the end of next week, though, I'll cancel it. I'll periodically check this thread and update this post.

If I'm running it, which I have no problem with, it'll be going through Yahoo, cuz that's where all my other pools are, so it's easiest for me to keep track of :-P If there's enough interest, I'll get it going.

Yea, it'd definitely be a week night. And not next week, as I'm going to the Jays games all week... haha.

It's set up as a live online draft. If you do not attend the draft, your team will default to your rankings, aafter that it goes to yahoo's default rankings.

Let's get 10-12 people signed up, then we can talk about a prize pool. I suggest $10 per person, winner takes everything except the entry fee goes to 2nd place.

if not it's not a big issue, but as a preference i'd probably opt out if we're doing prizes.

i won't be in for prizes if i can't live draft... autopicking kills me everytime it's just too hard to draft a good team. although a lot of times it's about the free agent pickups lol.

I'm back now and just registered for the pool and draft. However, what is the scoring system for this draft? It wasn't particularly clear to me looking at the site and it seems to be set-up for head to head match-ups.

Most pools I've joined in the past are a straight draft of players with total points based on the year. Some allow trades and some don't.

So, how is this pool going to work exactly? :loco

It looks like it's head to head, with trades. Scores based on:
Player
Goals
Assists
+/-
PPP (honestly don't know what that is...)
Shots on Goal
Goalie
Wins
Losses
Goals Against Average
Save %
Shut Out

Yes, sort of, but how many points for each of these statistics?? Makes a huge difference in how one prioritizes a player.

If we track all of this stuff, that makes this pool very complex...

Call me crazy, but pools that give one point for a goal and assist and points for goalie wins and shutouts make it a lot simpler.

Agreed. I'd also prefer the lower maintenance approach...

You don't HAVE to trade... But I like the trades. Sometimes, you realize that your D is terrible and not getting you any points, so you want to upgrade a D-Man, and can find someone who is missing a good C. It makes things more interesting in my opinion.

And really, in a pool like this, you're going to want to tweak your lineup every day, basically, since you have people on the bench, who don't get you points. If one of your skaters has a night off, you'll want to throw in someone from your bench.

Don't mind the trading aspect, that is always cool.

But the format where we need to be involved daily just won't fit into my schedule. I simply just don't have the time to be regularly checking who is playing and who isn't on a nightly basis and then requesting trades and everything else.

I figured we were just going to pick like 10 to 12 players in a draft format and record total points based on a formula with trades allowed etc.

Basically, I didn't realize that this was how the pool was going to be set-up. It sounds like it will be a blast, but just isn't right for my schedule. I think I'm gonna have to take a pass on it, but hope you guys have fun. It is just awesome that hockey season is here in any respect.

I love pools. It keeps me interested in sports that I've never really cared about (basketball, football), and makes me pay more attention to the ones that I love (hockey). Before, I would only pay attention to the Leafs due to proximity, and the Habs, cuz they're my team. Now I'm going to be legitimately interested in how everyone is doing. However, you're right, it is a HUGE time commitment for something like baseball/hockey/basketball with the daily changes in teams playing, injuries, etc. Football is REALLY easy, since they only play once a week :chuckle

All in all, both ways would be fun to do a pool. This format is a lot more interactive than the roster way of doing it, but also a lot more time consuming.

I agree, though, I'm glad hockey is back.

you can alter your lineup anytime before the player plays. However, you can set your lineup ahead of time for the week, or even two weeks if you want, as the schedules are all loaded into yahoo.

If I am the difference of one person here, I'll simply keep my team in place and participate tonight so you guys can keep the draft going. I won't have much time for tweaking and will likely be an automatic loss, but its only $10.00i suppose...

If you are needing another player because you have an odd number, then i can delete my team and you'll be good to go.

OK, I'm just going to throw something out there. Zoom Zoom, this will change the comments in your last post, if people agree on it. I don't really care, but it's a way one of my friend does his pools, to keep things interesting all season.

Basically what he does is everyone pitches in $x, winner take all, except 2nd place gets money back. The interesting part is that the person who comes in LAST has to pay 2x the entrance fee. This prevents people conceding at the All Star break, and it keeps people interested all year long.

It's just an option that I had never heard, and thought it was interesting. If people think it's a dumb idea, just shoot it down. I just think this way, everyone will be wanting to win every week, if not to win, then to not lose...
