This question is for those who is driving a manual tranny. Just for curiousity.

Roll to stop until 1000 RPM and put into neutral, then come to a complete stop.
But I'm trying to learn heel-and-toe technique.. though :P. So I do sometimes downshift.

i do the same thing as openuser; i coast in as high a gear as possible for as long as possible, then shift down a gear, but i leave the clutch dipped at this point and just stop.
then i put it in neutral (or first, if i know the light is changing soon)

Downshift about 60% of the time. (No option on poll).

I downshift all the time to ensure I'm in a proper gear if I have to pull away quickly. If something comes flying up behind you, you don't want to be fumbling to put it in the right gear to get out of the way.

For me I like to roll to a stop in a gear these days. I guess I m just getting lazy. I used to down shift to a stop, but does it make any difference for the life of the tranny weather u down shift or not to a stop??

you save your brakes by down shifting with a manual

i learned that downshift also helps the gas disappear too lol..

Actually i found that rolling in a gear instead of down shifting slow the car more, which means lesser brake pad wear. That is my findings tho. I could be wrong.

That is definately true. That is one reason I don't downshift anymore, need to save those gas in my tank as long as it can.

just rolling in neutral is so much easier for me cuz if im going up a hill then then the car will just slow down on its own no brakes or downshifting

Brake pads are cheaper than clutch :)
By downshifting at all times, you are putting quite a lot of wear on the clutch..

ALWAYS downshift. If you're properly downshifting you won't burn your clutch at all. The key is rev matching.

Downshift, THEN engine brake. You'll slow even faster in a lower gear. and save gas.

Um, when you downshift and come off the gas pedal your engine is being turned by the wheels, hence 0.0L consumed/100Km. Try it, it's a great way to save on gas.
And if you're in a lower gear you can engine break longer than you could in the higher gear. This means even more time with the engine being turned by the wheels, therefore more time consuming 0.0L/100Km. Hence gas savings.

downshift occasionally, usually into second. then i just put it into neutral when the RPM's get lower.

I usually let the car slow down in gear, then stuff in the clutch as the engine speed gets low. If I need to accelerate I throw the tranny right into whatever gear makes sense for the speed I am going. For example, if I am going around a corner (e.g. turning into a parking lot) I'll be engine braking in fourth and downshift directly to 2nd as I roll around the corner so I can accelarate when the turn is done.

i know how to downshift or double clutch, but my question is that if i dont downshift will the tranny life becomes less?

cruising in neutral toward a red light burns no gas just a lil brake wear when i get to the line

But you're still idleing, which means you're still burning gas.

Depends waht it is..
Stop sign, highest gear = low then neutral.
If its a traffic light and I had speed, heel toe just in case I need to pull a bit...

Downshift.... brakes last longer, and clutch wear is from acceleration, not decceleration. Fuel consumption? Someone prove that to me with numbers and I'll believe it.... I'm getting great mileage downshifting, always have, why stop?

i just roll to a stop or i use my brakes i hate downshifting. i did that once and i put it in first instead of third at 80KM/HR never again. ill use my brakes instead of wearing my clutch. speaking of which i need new brakes haha.

And with the wheels pushing the engine there's not a darn thing the rev-limiter can do to keep the rods attached to the pistons....
Downshift.
Car is allways controlled.
Better breaking.
Clutch self cleaning.
Cogs in tranny forged on both sides.
Engine is better cooling and lubricated.
Fuel consumption barely more , electronics do it minimal.

I voted 'Roll to a stop in neutral' but I downshift properly from whatever gear to the previous one til I reach 3rd. Then from 3rd to neutral. I rarely go to 2nd.
