i'll buy for $101 =P jk jk....I was looking at prices for Lake Louise and a 3 night stay, 2 days lift tickets and transfer from Calgary to the hotel (there and back) at the Banff Inn is about $419 per person, I am actually looking at doing a group thing for my friends in February. with 6+ people it would be $50 off that price...so the only things that would be expensive is the flight =S

Theres always that Porter Airlines deal to Tremblent.

Sold! You can PM me the money. *I'm pretty sure the credit note is non-transferable*

Seriously, I would go for 4-5 days of snowboarding. 2 days is way too short, especially for making all the effort to fly there.

Speaking of Tremblant, I'll be there next weekend. Let's see if the weather will be favourable.

I'm not even in the country then I'll still be in Vegas until Friday morning

vanpatrick81
12-09-2009, 04:39 PM
That is the only thing. You would have to take Friday off since the bus leaves on Thursday midnight. Reason we decided this was so that people can have more time to enjoy the slopes. If we leave on Friday, the day is pretty much gone and you are left with Sat and Sun to enjoy the slopes.

We had our trip last year to Killington, VT during the Family Day holiday. We still leave the same day, Thursday night, and be back here on Monday early morning. Problem with having it on that day is that our holiday also falls on a holiday of theirs (US) so the prices for the hotels are more expensive hence we decided to make it earlier this year.

so who went out to hit the slopes this weekend? Moonstone was pretty good and price wasn't bad. Blue Mountain ripped me off though. $42 for 2 blue runs and a beginner. talk about rip off.

what did you pay to go to moonstone with limited runs?

vanpatrick81

moonstone was $30 for 3 runs. at least the green run on moonstone was a hell of a lot longer than blue's easy rider run.

my friends booked a chalet at blue for the weekend. already there so just went to blue. 2 runs and a kiddie run.

Does anyone know of any good deals for snowboard/ski waxing?

ZeroChalk
12-21-2009, 09:06 PM
^ do it yourself, it's pretty easy.

Buy a cheap iron > buy some wax > dial the iron to a low setting enough to melt the wax > splatter drops across your board > iron the board feeling the underside of the board for hot spots (don't de-laminate your board/ski - hence the low setting) > scrap it off with a plastic scraper > use a household dish washing pad for finishing touches.

Use a ptex candle to fill in large groves.

I'm unsure if I should get a freestyle board or a freeride board! Decisions decisions...

tweak_s
01-26-2010, 12:36 PM
Freeride vs freestyle? Bit confused :P.

TO be honest though, I didn't realize there was that much a difference for snowboards.. but unless you sit in the park the whole time I'd go freeride.

I'm as kiier but have my all mountain carvers, all mountain twin tips (all mountain, and jumps), and a pair of twin tips i use just for rails.

if I had to choose one, nomrally I grab the all mountain twins... lol.

ya nothing will be open anywhere in Ontario yet.. most places want some kinda base prior to making snow..

two years ago i went to Sunshine valley just north of Baniff, was beutiful, stayed in the resort, after the 25 min gondola ride into the mountains.. you can start to ski wher the resort were as well. Best part was the ski out, all the way down the mountian face to the parking lots. I think if you took one of the top green runs, and followed it all the way down to the ski out run, it's somthing like 19km long.. was just fun as hell to ski...

The Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway and Cloudsplitter Gondola along with all activities are closed in preparation for the winter season. We expect to start making snow on November 15th and hope to open for skiing and riding on Friday November 26th. Stay tuned for more updates!

I have time off next wknd and wanted to see if I can squeeze in a mountain drive and some early season skiing. But I'm prolly way ahead of myself at this point...

That sucks because AC used to I'mnot sure now allow one peice of checked luggage as "sporting equipment" and the other as a suit case with now extra charges.

When I pack my board in my soft bag I put towels inside it to protect the edges of my board because they toss it aroudn with regard what so ever.

Yeah it might end up being around the same price to rent vs bringing my own and if it is I will probably bring my own stuff. Still have to figure out all of the details though. I was thinking about wrapping the board in towels as well. My bag has a little padding but not enough for their lack of respect at the airports.

I have been to Tremblant a few times before but that was a long time ago. I also consider Whistler and Blackcomb to be a step up from Tremblant lol. I would much rather be comfortable in my own stuff that's for sure.

who skis/rides park on the forum? ive only been once so far and i neeeeed to go back, loving the blue setup this year although they really dont have that much up at alllll

I tried for a bit, but for some reason after high school I'll admit, I lost balls for park. :(. Still ride twintips because I like the "freedom" but haven't set foot in a park that wasn't a "mini park" in a while :( lol.

Then I rather drive to blue than horseshoe. Horseshoe I feel like strapping in is a waste of time. Before you know it I'm at the bottom.

But blue is getting very boring the last few times I went out.

not sure bout HS but the blue park is pretty decent. pipe is nothing special at this point just like every other year. they have a nice medium and large jump, and 2 monsters near the end. the rail setups are real nice, some small mellow ones at the top and a few bangers as well. im dissapointed that pretty much the whole right side of the park has nothing on it... pretty much ends at the pipe

Yea the drive home was sketchy but well worth it, best conditions i've ever ridden at HS.

The run under the main lift had a section where no one went on and was just nice super floaty powder.

your best bet is to try the classifieds (kjiji, craigslist) i think there's a lot of options out there for a cheap used board. i wouldn't limit yourself to burton unless you REALLY like it. too much limitation on bindings. unless you also REALLY like burton bindings. lol... i hate most burton bindings because of the toe cap.

What kind of bindings? If they are Burton, I know that they come with a lifetime warranty (with conditions of course http://ca.burton.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-Burton_CA-Site/default/CustomerService-Show?cid=binding-guidelines) just contact their customer service and they'll replace it for you. Happened to me couple of years ago...they didn't carry my binding anymore and only had ones that were an upgrade so I scored a newer and better pair.

That's the plan :) Really want to make the trip back out west to Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island. I spent about 6 months there maybe 5 years ago but it was the worst winter in their history and the mountain never opened :(

I used to ride a lot of park, which made Ontario riding great... but I'm getting older and have had some bad injury luck in the last few seasons (torn ligaments in both shoulders on separate occasions, broken clavicle), so I've naturally lost interest in that too. + 1 on the TM3 day at Blue :D

With the slow decent in temperature and all the winter tire talk, its hard to not start thinking of the upcoming snow season. That being said, the search for snowboarding gear begins! Just thought I'd start a thread for all the powder junkies out there and see what are people's current set up, what are you looking at picking up, where you ride and your favourite board shops.

Currently my setup:
'08 Burton Custom with '07 Custom bindings and '06 Burton Motos. Looking at switching the boots out to either the '08 or maybe the '09 Motos.

Where I ride:
Typically up at Blue because of proximity but will ride anywhere given the chance.

Frequented shops:
Ski/Snowboard show is a must, Boardzone(rebranded, don't know their new name), Hogstown, Empire(online), The Boardshop(London)

If anyone is interested (I know we always say this) but lets do a TM3 day at Blue.

Now I just like to make my own trails, hit rollers, drops, maybe look for a fallen tree or rock jib lol..

I've never done park riding myself. I've always been a free rider seeking pow and going between the trees! Sorry to hear about your injuries though! Perfect excuse to do pillow drops because it's easy on your body if you bail!

I heard some ads on the radio these past few days. I'll probably head over, I need a new deck.

I've been wanting to start for so long now - but everytime for the past 6 years, the opportunity comes along - Work or family functions got in the way

my tips are

a) Take a lesson. You'll learn proper technique and develop good habits which is really important
b) Figure out your sizes and buy your own gear (USED!). Renting is a HUGE waste of money.

Best advice for a beginner.... the BEST investment you can make is your boots. Everyone wants the best looking board, or the most tech bindings, but when starting, having a pair of new boots that fit you well, keep you comfortable and out on the hill is the most essential investment.

If you don't have proper fitting boots, you can:
-injure yourself
-major heel lift means you waste a lot of energy trying to control your board
-have a hard time controlling your board because your foot slides around inside.

go to the ski and snowboard show (on this weekend until sunday) and check the used gear swap section for board / bindings
if you don't know how to pick a fitting boot, go to one of the vendors and ask them.

___________

Who's going / gone to the show!? I will be heading there tomorrow morning.
I went to watch Art of Flight last night--- AMAZING!

Just to add to what these two have said... buy new boots for sure (I didn't make this point in my post).

But having 2011 gear isn't all that important. There isn't ever an advancement made over the space of one season that makes the previous models obsolete. Typically, you can save 50% on BRAND NEW gear left over from 2010. This is what I do for all my gear.

I really think so. It doesn't have to be $400 boots. as long as they fit right that's the most important part.
Burton Motos, off the top of my head are about $150 after tax

Dagmar IMO actually has a pretty darn good park for its area..

I mean its not Blue's or MSLM's but it has a nice variety of rails from what I can see. I haven't rode park in 2 years though :( lol (been on the kiddy park but not the big one.. didn't want to hurt the knees anymore LOL).... so maybe someone else might have a more qualified opinion whos rode the park in recent years.

I have worked park staff at dagmar for the past 3 years however this year lakeridge approached me and my boss and offered us a deal we could not refuse to go and design and build the park at lakeridge. With lakeridge's hill and features the park this year is going to be amazing were going to blow what we have done at dagmar in the past few years out of the water.
on a side note dagmar hired a bunch of kids to replace us and have a terrible groomer operator taking over this year.

I hope this helps on your local hills, Dagmar is going to be sad this year as the new kids and groomer operator learn how to design a park.

Come to lakeridge!

just noticed - why do people state the year their board was made?

GWN
10-28-2011, 10:45 PM
most companies update the graphics / specs of their boards every year, so by stating the year it's easier to see exactly which board they're talking about.

as for my specs:
2007 Forum Youngblood board
2009 Forum Republic Bindings (15 / -15)
Ride Boots (real shitty, new boots before this season :) )

it's a pretty park-friendly setup but I can't ride park anymore :( too many concussions from hockey and wakeboarding. now im a powder-hog :D lol

Skiier here GWN.. I do that.. but my gears from 2004 LOL.

Carving skis though, just can't do any park at all :(. However, now that I play more tennis, I'm more um... hesitant to do park. So now, while I still ride the twin tips more (I just like being able to mess around on them :P), they don't ride groomers that well.. :(.

You know what? now that I think about it, having too much choice = difficult!! I don't know what to bring! LOL

The Wolf
10-31-2011, 12:12 AM
If I rode real mountains, I'd probably have a separate board for park and mountain riding. But here in ontario where everything is a groomer, there's really no point.

If you're going to hit handrails or city obstacles though, you probably want to find a board to trash for that.

I have an Elan Royale board (paid 100$ for 3 boards on kijiji, sold the other two for $60, and ended up with one board that cost me -20$ lol), burton boots (got them 80% off, so like 35$ or something), drake bindings (80% off as well, so i think that was about as much as the boots), and a 95% off helmet (nice black one, dunno why it was so cheap) that cost me about 7$ lol.... so my whole snowboarding setup cost me about $50, and i have nice shit. its just not the latest models.

Eek on wrist supports. Its a good way to clean break your forearms :P
Good buys on all your gear. My first bindings were Flow and they were great. Nice and simple to use. As I progressed I felt like I wanted something with a little more support so I went in another direction.

Anyway, yeah I just fold a seat down and keep a blanket in my trunk to keep the slush off the seats/carpet. Roof rack is nice but I don't have that kind of dough!

I used to be so anal about people scuffing my board (this WILL happen, multiple times, every single time out) but I just stopped caring. Battle scars ftw :D

ZeroChalk
11-03-2011, 01:51 PM
about the scuffs - if you don't have any on your board.. it means you don't ride enough! You can usually tell people who are new by how well kept their gear is. Save your money for the trips out of province!

I have a roof rack thought about putting my snowboards up there (safer in case of an accident) but I don't really see how it would be beneficial since realistically they only carry two snowboard. I understand if your seats don't fold down, you have skiis, or is a local... but I think it's better to just carry the boards in the car. What we do is brush the snow off the boards and throw them in snowboard bags for the trip home. Get home, dry it off... the boards shouldn't rust unless you keep it there for the next time; but by simply riding you get rid of the surface rust.

Seats down. Its easiest and cheapest. I got a bag for my board for xmas last year and that made things even easier, and stops snow from melting all over my seats
