Im pretty sure the "black out" period is only for the day portion of the pass, you can still use the pass for night (4pm-10pm) during the black out. At least i did last year and was never asked about it.

about the scuffs - if you don't have any on your board.. it means you don't ride enough!

We say it every year - but it never happens. lol. Anyways, I got my 5x7 ready (it would have to be a saturday night though).
about the scuffs - if you don't have any on your board.. it means you don't ride enough! You can usually tell people who are new by how well kept their gear is. Save your money for the trips out of province!
Haha.. how about if your board only lasts 1 season.... correction 1 or 2 trips before it's destroyed?
I rode a brand new board last year and I wrecked it pretty bad.

I have a double down pass! I'm down for meetups. I'll do anything for snowboarding.

Yea there is a black out for the 5x7. But im pretty sure you can still use it as a night only pass during the blackout. So basicly it turns into a "Night Pass" untill the blackout is over.

woowww i dont know about everyone else but im rediculously impatient to go and ride already. if anyone wants to meet up for rides we should set up a roll call., however, im very dissapointed in mother nature becuase of the lack of snow that we have, already in december! friggg. Blue projected opening is next weekend ( friday the 9th), taking bets as to how many runs will be open! :chuckle

I just have a beginners snowboard and it's pretty stiff and heavy. I'm looking for a board that is lighter and possibly less rigid than a wooden shelf (although, I'm not sure if this is really necessary and what the purpose is of a more flexible board).
Does anybody have any recommendations?? I'm not sure what to look for in a snowboard or where to even find a good store. I'm hoping to spend less than $300 but the cheaper the better of course. I'm in no hurry and can wait until the end of the season blowout specials as well if somebody can point me in the right direction/store. Thanks!!
FYI, I only go down the mountains and can take very small jumps.

As a beginner, you should be using a more flexible board... they're generally more forgiving. Usually as someone progresses, they want a stiffer board. The stiffness helps you stay stable at higher speeds and can also help you land jumps and stuff.
I'd just go into any snowboard shop (NOT Sportchek type stores... a dedicated snowboard shop) and tell them you're looking for an intermediate board and tell them your price point. For $300 you should be able to get a pretty good board from last season, as shops typically clear out old stock at 50% off or even more. Probably around March you'll start seeing these blowout type sales for this season... They still might have stock left from the 2010/2011 season.
As for brands, that shouldn't be too big of a concern... every brand makes boards for every price point. As a personal preference, I stay away from Burton... They make great stuff, but you're paying a lot for the name.
If you want something a little different, check out ZION Snowboards. (http://store.zionsnowboards.com/)
They're a small company out of BC who make VERY HIGH quality limited edition stuff for a lot cheaper than you'd pay for some more "popular" brands. Sometimes it pays to support the Little Guy. I have a Zion Z1, been riding it for 4 years now (that's ages for me), and I still love it.
If you're not comfortable buying something you can't hold in your hands first, I'm a fan of Stepchild... but really any brand is fine.

Yeah the opening day for blue got pushed to the 15th, pretty much means i wont need a park pass untill after christmas by the looks of it. :sad. They sometimes have a little baby rail right by the conference buliding early in the year. My company is closing down for the christmas break not far after the 15th,so if anyone ever wants to meet at the 400 & 9 car pool, we can go "shred some flake" as my buddies and i like to call it.

You can rock whatever you like as long as you have the skills to back it up. Generally the more flash - the more attention - you better be good. One of the best outfits I saw was a guy in Quebec wearing a construction like outfit and he was awesome. As for me, I'm wearing the same thing I wore last year... just got a different helmet and new boots.

Everyone once in a while i see the same group of guys at blue with dressed up in the one peice 80's snow suits with crazy wiggs on. I get a kick out of it everytime. I went for the brigther colours so i can easily be spotted so we dont split up. Iv been getting better and better in the park, so I guess I'll get brighter and brighter untill my legs dont work properly anymore.

not to be "that guy", but the main reasoning most advaned skiier wear brighter colour clothing is if they do ski in real tough terrain, it's makes it easier for the rescuers and their friends to get to them.
at a resort, wearing something that stands out makes it easy for your friends to spot you. personally, an asian guy with a rasta head, is pretty subtle...
I also find it funny when beginners get into the gear craze, then find out their lack of skills is on full display...

I disagree with this statement.
Why do I have to be good to be able to wear something other than plane jane black or grey?

You don't have to be good to wear flashy colours or something nice...just that ppl should know, that when you wear something flashy, and your wipe-out, it's a lot easier to spot you.
Like I said, the brighter coloursare really for safety reasons...the fashion side of things is interesting...I mean, if it gets more girls out on the slopes, why the heck not?

Yes...for the sake of recognizing each other, something eye-catching without being flashy would suffice. I've skiied with a rasta wig/hat before.

I hope they have it cheaper for opening day. They would usually have it for $20 for the first weekend of opening. Dec 10-15 is listed at $40 and full price afterwards. Who the hell wants to pay $40 for 2/3 runs and an overcrowded lift.

baggy pants and big jacket for me :)
as for my current setup, I've got bright blue special blend annex pants and a metallic blurple jiberish letterman jacket
and I think people should be allowed to wear whatever they like on the mountain, your skill really shouldn't make a difference as to what you like and feels comfortable for you. And yeah, if you wear bright stuff you'll stand out and if you bail people notice, but who's really going to care? Only ones who might laugh / say something are the people you shouldn't worry about anyway

I don't think anyone in this thread said that you have to be skilled to wear flashy clothes...my point is just that some ppl get so wrapped up about the gear, that they forget it's a sport of skills, not a fashion show.
The only gear tho, that requires real skills: skiing in shorts or t-shirt or both in Mar/Apr...you don't want to wipe out, even if you're wearing all white...lol...

Thread-spamming here, but I understood what you were saying from the get go. Obviously everyone can wear whatever they want... it's a free country lol.
It's like being the CEO of a multi-national corporation and deciding not to shave for 7 years, wearing a pink polo and spandex shorts to a rough country bar. You're allowed to do it, but things might not go so well for you.

Thanks for that. The prices are a little more than I was hoping to spend. Maybe at their end of year sale.
But would those snowboards be better than the K2 snowboard currently on sale at Sportchek? The regular price is $400 and sale price is $230. They have a regular version and a wide version (no idea what the difference is).

^^I recommend you take a trip to sanction. They probably have clearance items not listed online. In fact, I know they do. K2 makes decent boards but they also have sportchek-specific models which are crap compared to their true models.
Edit: at least they used to. I remember going there and seeing different graphics and different board construction on those from "true" shops. They were selling burton customs with foam cores... That's just insane to me. Haven't been inside a SC in a while though.

like sawatsky said, go to the store. their online inventory and prices are not reflective of what they have in stock. their online only shows a few items but they have more boards in store.
i'm not completely sure if the ones they sell at SC is really worth purchasing. haven't been to one in a while. though i would recommend spending a bit more on a decent board since it'll last you a while. been using mine for 3/4 years now. got it for 400 including bindings at the ski/snowboard show. used it to learn how to snowboard and then used it on killington and whiteface. the bindings i changed after 2 years but the board is still good.
or you can buy used for now if you want to and then wait for the boards to go on sale around feb/march/april. got the ride machete for $350 (original price $500).
If you plan on going a lot of big mountain and off piste, don't go with really expensive boards unless you have lots of $$$$. If you plan to just cruise around in resort riding, then it could potentially last a long while.
I don't like spending so much money on my boards because of the way and what I ride. Mine get destroyed after 1 or 2 seasons at the most.
Nothing wrong with the ones at sportchek for beginner - intermediates. Really, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway. It's only when you start to get more advanced do you actually appreciate or want a specific type of board.

I worked at Sport Chek for about three years or so, you can get a good board at SC it just takes some research. You can also get beginner stuff (like my first board) that will last a long time and be fine for around here.
My biggest regret when purchasing my first round of gear was cheaping out on the boots. The board you won't really know isn't the greatest if it is your first one (though it will be less durable) but your boots you will know instantly.
where can i buy good snow pants for decent price?
www.store.thinkempire.com
Even though its an online store, they have amazing prices and the customer service is GREAT. Got my pants from there a couple seasons back
If you want to be able to actually look at the products, some stores I like are So Hip it Hurts, Senecal Ski & Board (in Newmarket), Boardsports, and even Surf Paradise has some good quality stuff.
And in my personal opinion, if you find yourself deciding between two different pairs, don't just go for the cheaper one. Nothing ruins a great day faster than uncomfortable pants or water seeping through

Yeah it's a hill called Fernie. Snowed like 6 inches last night so can't wait to go back out tomorrow. Already has like a 200 cm base. .... Friends in Huntsville have lots of snow already and I think I heard Horseshoe is open now.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I went to Sanction and they were really, really helpful. I ended up buying some 2010 stuff at 40% off. My old board is so heavy that I thought my foot was going to fall off when riding up on the lift.
Funny thing. The 2 guys helping me knows Joe (FlipDaddy). One guy use to have a Mazda3 and had an account here. I think he said his name was RiceBaby or something like that. He sold his car and picked up a Mazda6 because he plays ice hockey and he needs to lug around his goalie equipment. Now I'm ready for when the snow hits. I wish I were heading over to Whistler. Never been.

DAMN YOU! Heliskiing (heliboarding?) is the one thing I want to do :chuckle just have to settle for riding the alpine I guess :( lol
And in response to hyper7boy, Horseshoe is definitely small, but I think it's the only place open right now, so choice isn't really there. You should be getting a good deal on early season lift tickets though?

I'm not too worried about the cost seeing as i got a couple of lift tickets for my birthday. I just hope the weather and the runs look good on monday :S

Well i figured i would go monday as i really only have a chance to go during my winter break. From what i have heard high schools are still in session on that monday so it shouldn't be too busy which is a major selling point for me especially when the resort is so small.
For example, Glen Eden sucks when its busy because it takes 15 mins to get up and only 30 seconds or less to get down. But, when you go when its not busy, you can go up and down a million times without waiting too long!
I'm still going to go but probably save my second pass until later in the winter and just hope I can find time during second semester.

Sure, I can post some snippets of the occasion once I've sorted it out. There is an short questionaire test on the Whistler website to gauge your skill. I think they recommend that you are at least an intermediate to go Heli. Here's the link:
http://www.whistlerheliskiing.com/details/rating.asp
According to this test, I am "Advanced". If I answer more conservatively I'm "Strong Intermediate"
I believe they group people by skill and depending on the group's skill level, they will take them to different spots on the mountain.

Hard to say for Monday. The weekend temp is supposed to drop and we'll make snow all weekend so maybe 2 more runs. Busy? If x-mas break hasn't started then I don't think it will be too bad.

if I was to travel to another time zone to ski, I'd likely rent locally, to avoid the whole hassle of lugging your gear around airports, onto public transport, etc.
in the resort towns, there are usually several rental places (vs. renting at the slopes) that are way more affordable, esp for multi-day rentals. I'd likely bring my own boots tho, cuz that's just gross...but it's also a good chance to try out newer/nicer gear.

Wouldn't wrap clothes around the board as that's a great way if your edges are sharp to cut into your jacket or clothes. Just throw everything in, put your goggles in one of your boots or in your bindings. Like everyone said, worry about damaging your snowboard as it is pretty robust (see: hitting terrain park).
I'd strongly recommend a snowboard bag with rollers if you do a lot of travelling.
ZeroChalk
12-20-2011, 11:05 AM
the roller bags usually have padding (as they are meant for the airport) vs the ones that you carry on your shoulder.

Thanks guys for the tips. I suppose I could grab my parents old old towels from like 15 years ago and use that as stuffing. That should work fine.
I suppose renting is a good option if I have too much to carry but I have my own board!! I suppose it depends on the circumstance since my wife and son would be with me as well if I ever go.

If you go to staples you can buy a roll of the the bubble wrap. Wrap your board in the bubble wrap and then stuff your clothes in it. Keeps your board safe and saves your clothes from getting ripped. I did that when I went to banff a couple years ago.
The Wolf
12-20-2011, 06:19 PM
I never thought about my edges cutting my clothes. I keep my edges fairly dull for park purposes. Rounded over basically between my feet. I couldn't cut butter with my board. But for those who keep their edges razor sharp, yeah wrapping your $300+ jacket and pants around your board would be a bad idea haha

fyi, Sporting Life for boxing day had 50% off Burton, 686, other apprarel this morning for only 2 hours. Something to keep in mind next year because the selection was great (this years stuff) vs waiting till the end of the season / next year's snowboard show! Prices were on par or slightly cheaper than what you would get at the end of the year. I spurged a tiny bit.... I went back to exchange something this afternoon and as I sat in the dressing room waiting for my gf to change I heard another couple talk about a good deal 20% on a $350 jacket... I was like... if they had only come earlier! I had no heart to mention anything.

Well.. taking a look outside today and looking at weather temps and conditions at blue... LOTS OF SNOWWWW.. here: its crazy outside. finally some snow! blue: they said its expected to have 5-10 cm snow. but also theres a storm watch coming our way. :headbang
yesterday blue had 2 main lifts open and about 5-10 runs or so it said. conditions of the actual surface on the hills are getting better. less and less ice but the wind yesterday was craaaazzzyyyy. you could just get pushed down the hill with the wind alone.
good times.

yea just need some butter in my life.
now i dont know if this is just my own made up thoughts or what but is it true that a shorter border and more flex is better for buttering? or is that completely wrong. i mean it makes sense, to me at least, but just wanna make sure.
I've found that to be the case :P also if you're using a wide stance might want to narrow it up a bit (I rock a centered stance at 15 / -15) so you have more nose and tail to press on
and I might be back at blue on thursday :D
The Wolf
12-28-2011, 06:02 PM
i like a mid-flex for park/butters. Too soft and i just fall over the nose or tail. I'm on the widest holes on my 157, slightly back of centre, 15/15.

But I dunno cause I've never gone.

The backpack has food, extra layers if it gets cold, water and some other small things like spare gloves if mine get wet. It's not a lot of extra weight to carry but a lot of extra convenience so you don't have to do a special visit to the mid station. The bag also has a board carry. A board carry is an IMMENSE help when hiking. Especially the water, I can (obviously) last longer when I'm well hydrated.
the backpack is also where I keep my DSLR. The pictures posted there was with my DSLR camera. Point 'n shoots and cell phones don't do it justice enough. haha...

Holy smokes. How did you fit your DSLR in there with everything else?? What kind of backpack is it and where did you get it??
Now I'm thinking of getting one since it would be nice to store a bottle of water and some food in it. I know it's probably overkill at Blue Mountain but I hate stopping to get some water.

I use a Burton Zoom bag to hold all my camera gear when out riding. excellent and highly recommended.
Just booked my flight out west for late february. Going to vancouver then Kamloops as a base of operations. We're planning for kicking horse, sun peaks, revelstoke and one day of heli boarding. should be sweeeet :D

Haha... It's a Dakine Heli Pro DLX bag. I believe it's the 20L version (There are different sizes).
http://www.dakine.com/p/ski/packs/guys/heli-pro-dlx
I have a small camera bag that I use as padding to protect the camera with my 24-70 lens. it takes up about the bottom half of the bag. I can use a smaller camera bag if I bring a smaller lens though. I can fit the camera bag, hoodie and sandwiches in the backpack no problem. I also have the bladder for the backpack which feeds into the shoulder strap for quick access. You should be able to get this bag online (which is where I got it) or from sports stores. I don't think places like Sportchek carry them though.
A bag like this is overkill for Blue, or anything in Ontario for that matter. For Ontario, I have a Camelbak (for cycling) that I wear under my jacket with the water tube fed and held in place behind the shoulder strap.
keep in mind water usually freezes and candy turns to something that can break your teeth in the cold weather.
Although there are insulated tubes that you can buy to prevent this, I have never had this problem while riding and I've been out on some relatively COLD days. The insulated tubes I feel ore more geared toward deathly freezing temperatures.

I used a camel pack a long time ago, it ran up my backpack and through the shoulder strap... I always had issues with the mouth piece freezing regardless if I blew the water back through the tube after each sip. hmm

There's no way the water could freeze at the mouth piece for me. All the body heat that I generate, it's well above freezing temperatures in my jacket.
If you're talking about the mouth piece in the zippered strap of the backpack like my dakine bag, I've never expereicned freezing there either and I've been through some pretty chilly runs with it! If it's dangling outside then I can see the potential for freezing there.

I went there once when I was learning to snowboard. It's fine for noobs. I did miss the left hand turn from Snow Valley Road though because it was hard to find. I didn't realize it until I hit the T intersection at Snow Valley Road and George Johnson Road. I think there was a set of train tracks right at the left hand turn. If so, then that would be your point of reference.
I remember having fun there so you shouldn't be disappointed.

I was thinking that - but there's a few of us trying this out for the first time - and they offer a nice deal that includes lessons, rentals, and lift passes for about $70.
I actually wanted to hit Blue, because the consensus points to Blue being the "IT" spot. But their 1st timer lesson worked out to be more expensive when compared to SV.
Besides - the more money saved, means more money for beers afterwards, I guess :D

My first snowboard lesson was at Snow Valley :hawt, it had really cheap beginners packages. If you are thinking of going to Horseshoe, I would go to Moonstone (same area / closer to the highway). The beginner's area is quite wide.
Fini, perhaps I need an insulated tube as I don't see the strap offering much protection.

Try it out! Or, if you have a backpack just keep a bottle of water in it instead of using a bladder.
The should strap is somewhat of an insulator, not as good as a dedicated wrap though.

Anyone see the Burton Locker wheelie bag?
http://images.usoutdoor.com/usoutdoorstore/products/full/b-wheelie-locker12345.jpg
A friend of mine brought it on a trip and I've been looking to replace my aging wheelie bag ever since. It's really a nice bag with tons of compartment space.
I was contemplating how I would get it from the US but would prefer to find it locally and exhaustive search of the internet has found nothing in Canada.
A good (and much cheaper) alternative is the Dakine Low Roller bag. Can be had for about $100 vs this bag for like $200
http://dakine.com/p/snowboard/board-bags/guys/low-roller
If you really want the same level of the Burton bag, try finding a Dakine High Roller

Glen Eden was pretty good tonight. Decent amount of fresh snow and zero lift lines!

The low roller is long enough so that you don't need a telescopic handle. If you are really roughing it, a lot of times you won't even be able to use the wheels anywhere except the airport.
Compartments are overrated IMO. it's just a zippered portion of the space between the bindings (this might even reduce the effective space). I've never found the need for extra compartments like that with my bag even on my 2 week Japan trip which I fit street clothes, riding clothes, gear and some souvenirs into. Sometimes more isn't better. Go with the Tour at less than 1/2 the price!
Just a thought!

One thing I disklike about my current roller (166) is that despite the fact it's fully packed it 'slouches' from its weight - my board is a 155. This irritates me when I drag the bag though the airport or to a bus as the bottom part near the rollers begins to drag. The telescopic handes adds the rigidity to the bag simply by how it attaches. A bag w/o a shoulder strap is a deal breaker to me. Carrying a huge snowboard bag up a flight of stairs or to the chalet by the handles is cumbersome. I do quite a bit of snowboard trips each year (non-local), it's just something I look for. Sure it's pricey but it's a solid investment. The other bags I don't see any difference from my existing rollerbag.

that's cool. you have your own preferences.
My experience with that particular roller bag is that even if it slouches, it don't drag on the floor. the wheels still work. I think the problem is that you're bag is too long for your board which causes drag.
I don't really mind the non-wheeled bags, and pretty happy with my shoulder strap. As I said a lot of times you don't even have the opportunity to use the wheels. also, smaller is better to maneuver into places like a subway.
Do you go anywhere that's not, how shall I say... North American Resort-esque? I can see how these types of roller bags are more for the what I call luxury resorts.

I agree with the bag size that's why I'm going to opt for the smaller bag (will also keep me better within the weight limit). Not quite sure what you mean by not North American resort'ish. I haven't been to Japan but I've been to Europe and for the most part it involves carrying the bag on a plane, a bus, a taxi, and a walk down the steet to the hotel. I do have a regular snowboard bag that I use for day-trips and such.

What I meant by "North American" was that everything is easily accessible by planes, trains, buses, etc and with a lot of space. Big name resorts like Whistler are easy to get to and accomodations are usually fairly spacious. If you went to say, Chile or Argentina there's a lot of carrying (YAY SHOULDER STRAP!) and stashing your stuff in pretty tight spaces. the more compact your travel, the better. Oh, and let's not forget the hitch hiking to get to the mountain. >_o

Went to tubing after to catch up with my wife and other friends. Only to find out they just had a scary experience.
So 3 of them went together and the guys looking after everybody said for some strange reason the missed all the parts on the lane where the tube was supposed to slow down, even flew over the rubber mats. So they went all the way to the end with a lot of speed, up the hill and hit the fence, bounced back down, gained speed, flew to the next lane, and again to the trees on the side. One hit her face on a tree, my wife and the other ended up in the snow. They're fine, just a bit shaken up.. So... I didn't go anymore. Next time i'll try it :)

I'm at Tremblant right now and its alright. I think I have been spoiled by the west coast and am a bit of a mountain and conditions snob. The east is predominantly icy with rare pow.
As for Blue, it seems the same to me as it has always been. Crowded.
I would like to go to steamboat but I heard its not thqt great this year in terms of snow accumulation/conditions.
Intrawest was (is?) in financial trouble. So that might be a reason for things slipping. The best thing they had was Whistler and they sold it :(

I went to Blue Mountain for the first time this past weekend. I arrived friday morning, stayed in the holiday inn express and let saturday afternoon. It was a great time! I am hopefully going to make it back up there this sunday! I love blue..10x better than all the other hills around here!
Go on a trip to an actual mountain and blue will never be the same :(

Whistler and Mt. Washington retty much ruined snowboarding in Ontario for me. Even visiting Tremblant on a good day will do it.

I KNOW! I'm depressed I only made it out to one trip this year.

Why night boarding? you have a 5x7? I want to go, but for a 12:30 start

Tremblant is too unreliable. East coast just doesn't get enough snow. You organize a trip there, and it's highly unlikely to give you a snow dump / pow day. How amazing is it when you look at a weather report that says it will snow 10cm overnight and that is considered crap? I admit I'm a mountain snob, but I still enjoy blue and go whenever I can.

Stop being such whistler snobs thinking it's like some sort of mecca... those people who've said it ruined snowboarding for them are the same peeps who probably buy the newest gear but really suck at snowboarding and go out 3-4 times a season. This winter I've been to quite a few resorts - Tremblant, Mt St Anne, Stoneham, Le Massif, and Killington... nothing ruined nothing.. I'm just glad to get out and wish the season was longer. Would have gone out West but I gotta save vacation time for a bigger trip.
Those who are passionate about snowboarding are always snowboarding (it's part of their weekly routine)... and there are others who come up with excuses.

You're right snowboarding is 100% not my passion it is just something I do, I will not argue with you there.
Also I went to Whistler with worse gear than I have now.

I just think it's unfortunate that we have such smaller hills than further West, etc. Does it make things seem less meaningful when you come back and ride Blue or even Horseshoe? Absolutely. Unfortunately that's the life we live out here lol.
I haven't been out a lot over the past few years but savour every moment when I do. I ride until everything hurts.I just think I'm lucky when I get to ride out West or on an actual mountain. :)

I know I'm new to snowboarding - but after reading all these comments, I'm never going boarding out west.
I dont want to spoil the fun I have here.
lol "whistler snobs", comparing mountain riding to what we get in ontario really isn't even fair, and I'd be lying if I said riding at whistler didn't, in some ways, ruin riding out east. The peak area at Whistler is way bigger than Blue Mountain as a whole, and that's just the peak. I love snowboarding, I'll ride anywhere, but that doesn't mean I can't prefer riding a real mountain... does it? I have a seasons pass to Whistler and I get out as much as I can, been up 7 times so far this year, but I also go to school so I can't guarantee myself a day of riding every weekend, but that shouldn't mean I'm not passionate about it
And saying we're those people who buy all the newest gear but really suck at snowboarding, who are you to judge? Because I buy "new gear" that means I suck? And my new gear that I buy probably costs less than a lot of the "old gear" I see a lot of people wearing (Spyder, Phenix, etc), where a jacket is worth more than my whole outerwear setup.
Moral of the story, everyone has an opinion and mine is that seeing and feeling what it's like to take 15-25 minutes to complete a peak-to-village run at Whistler kind of put a damper on taking < 1 minute top to bottom at Blue.

Yes, snowboarding is a passion for me. Just becuase it's a passion doesn't mean I'm the greatest rider in the world. Nor do I claim to be. But does that mean I don't know what I like and that can't tell the difference between a real mountain and what we have in Ontario? There are clear differences between them. Some of which include steep runs, off piste runs, glades and maybe most importantly POW. I'm not gonna speak for others but, what I'VE been saying is that when you compare Blue to an actual mountain, it's crap. But on it's own, it still makes for enjoyable riding. I don't make a million dollars a year nor do I have infiinite vacation time but I take what I can when I can because it's my passion.
I don't know why you would make a broad sweeping statement (that included me) saying that people like me suck and just like to buy the newest gear. It's a bit offensive and ignorant. As I said: Just 'cause I love the sport doesn't mean I'm a pro. In the last 12 months I've been to Mammoth, Vail, Aspen, Snowmass, Niseko, Myoko, Whistler (with Heli Boarding), Tremblant and yes even Blue and Mt St Louis Moonstone. Totalling about 35 days last season and 15 days so far this season. That's quite a bit for someone with a 9-5 job. The only reason why I don't ride more is that $$$ is a limiting factor for me.
Yah, I sometimes buy some new gear every year. You want to know why? Cause I like riding back country and off piste (Ontario obviously does not have this type of riding). When I ride, I ride hard and I end up trashing my stuff at times. Particularly boards.

Woah ..don't you love debates? It's interesting how many people took personal offense to my comment.
GWN - everyone is entitled to their own opinions but using blanket statements that 'Whistler' will ruin every other mountain in NA tells me either a) you have a wealth of experience and have been everywhere in NA OR b) you have very little experience and that you have been to a few resorts. We know that in Whistler, the snow is more wet, and it's alot more crowded than interior BC or on the otherside of the rockies. Call me ill-informed, but I actually don't prefer Whistler.
Fini - Not sure where you came up with the broad sweeping statement? I was referencing the type of people (i.e. <insert big resort> elitist) who buy the best of everything (look the part) but can't play the part, and narrow mindedly slam everything else down. Reminds me of last week, when I was talking to a guy who went snowboarding near the Matterhorn in Switzerland and told me... I have been so spoiled, I can't snowboard on the east coast. I'm really not sure how you misread that buying new gear is indicative that you must suck - people who are really into whatever hobby/sport usually have the newest top quality stuff.
My whole argument was that it shouldn't be about the place you go to.. but just doing it and stop making excuses. Too many people in this sport (skiing/snowboarding) are always trying to 1-up each other. I think it comes from the whole aristocratic nonsense of being able to say I can go off to far away places.

I'm actually a very good snowboarder. I have placed in big air and rail jam comps at the local hill (Chicopee ski club in KW).
When I was a kid, I loved Kraft Dinner. Now, not so much. My tastes have grown and evolved and I no longer enjoy the taste of yellow noodle shit. Get where I'm going with this?
I've bolded the part of the statement where you make broad sweeping generalizations, just in case you forgot what you wrote.
anyway, I just don't enjoy snowboarding like I used to. I wish I did, because I literally lived for snowboarding just a few years ago. I guess injuries will do that to you.

My statement about Whistler ruining any other resort in NA is based on my discussions with people who have been riding all over the world for their entire lives, sheer size (look up the differences, its pretty astounding), and personal experience. And maybe it was a bit of a stretch, but I can see myself riding at Whistler for the rest of my life and not getting tired of it, always find something new to hit every time I go.
I was just offended at being called a snob, and saying I suck at snowboarding because I buy new gear, and I'm clearly not the only one who read your comment as such. I'm not a pro, but I definitely hold my own on blacks / double-blacks and off-piste in Whistler.

+1 on the west ruining our lives here.
looking back at whistler this year, i feel like a snob.
most people here would kill to ride WB for a day, we rode maybe 2 runs in 4 days because all our time was spent in the whistler backcountry, more specifically hiking the symphony zone and some garibaldi prov park lines aswell...endless powder and 0 people, and 0 noise...surreal out there.
went to blue twice this year, so depressing :(

That's what I mean! I spend most of my time in the Symphony zone as well, I like hiking the flute bowl a lot. Blackcomb is like another planet to me, I haven't a lot of it, I just spend my time up at the glacier lol

Fair enough :)
Without giving any reasons then, I just fell out of love with snowboarding. Concussions, torn ligaments, dislocated shoulders causing nerve damage and a broken collarbone all suffered in three consecutive seasons could be more to blame. I had THE MOST fun riding park here in Ontario... but when I started to break, I had to quit. Low-impact snowboarding is all I have left, and when your local hill has 300 ft vertical, well...

After thinking about it, I apologize if I stepped on anyone's toes for questioning their passion about snowboarding and trying to hold you up to a measuring stick.
GWN - it's great to call Whistler your local mountain and of the ski resorts in the Vancouver area that'll be where I would be heading every weekend. Perhaps Cypress after work...
Fini - well we like to argue and bicker I notice... (see earlier discussions on the snow bag)
sawatsky - I can see how injuries would remove you from the sport... but that's great you are still out there.
This thread was about sharing our enjoyment of the sport regardless if you ski or snowboard once, twice, or 344 days of the season. :)

I pretty much ride park only here in Ontario. Once I got to the skill level where the double blacks at blue just didnt cut it anymore I turned to the park riding. But not to long ago I had some time out west at Sunshine and didn't have any desire to ride park. Im almost 25 and my body is already giving me hints I might have to cut down on the tricks. I always want to keep riding, because it really is a passion.
Here is a cool snowboarding quote I found.
-The Passion to ride-
"It's what drives us to wake up before the sun, load up our gear and head to the mountains while our neighbors sleep. It changes the meaning of 'Winter Storm Warning'. It drives us to question what's possible and never, ever take no for an answer. It creates unlikely friendships, unforgettable days, countless stories and a culture devoted to standing sideways and having fun."
- Burton
