Well the season here is over now but if anyone wants to find others to ride with for next year, I run a snowboard group. Great for meeting other boarders and carpooling.

my issue with the 5*7 is the massive blackout period over the holiday season.
the new select 5*7 that excludes weekends is interesting.

I'm opting out of a 5x7 pass this year as well. The last few years haven't been that good. I think I'll just get 2 double down passes. Winter sucks in southern Ontario.

Winter sucks in southern Ontario.

Sad but very, very true.
I was a snowboard instructor back in highschool and got so spoiled with the whole free coach ride+free lift pass+$150/day to ride deal....we used to get out 20-30+ times a year....these days, now that I'm driving myself up and buying the outrageously priced tickets and food, it's lost much of its appeal. I've got absolutely no problem paying $80 for a ticket at Revelstoke or Kicking Horse, but $70 for an all day pass at blue is so wildly unreasonable, I can hardly bring myself to do it anymore. These days, as far as I'm concerned, the best thing about Blue Mountain is their Bamboozler burger and beaver tails, and even they're an over-priced farce.

But on a more cheery note, I'd totally be up for a TM3 ski/snowboard event of some kind. Even if its just an informal meet with only a few people...it's always nice to ride in a group. We'll need to discuss further once theres some actual snow :D

Hey EVERYONE!

It has been about 6 years straight now going to moonstone for a group package deal and I'm planning on doing this again this year, I do rent a bus which is the Magic bus and if you're familiar with the brand name, you know what it is all about. Bus the rule for the bus is anything you want to do, but you have to keep it away from the windows and yes it is a party bus. Last year was the worse of them all since I had St, louis girls day of snowboarding more drunks on the hill was not a good outing. This year, lets do a TM3 and what do you guys think?

End of winter sales have better selection in stores than the deals from the show.

mazdaagain
10-10-2012, 11:45 AM
The deals from the show are the same deals generally that the stores have on at the end of the season and in the fall in store. They just bring the leftovers to the show and any additional discounted previous seasons gear that they buy at clearout prices from the manufacturers. There are occassioanlly "show specials" added but selection is better in store or if you go to the show the day that it opens.

Is it possible to get a refund on a 5x7? I bought it last year but I will be out of town in February (which is pretty much the heart of the ski season in Ontario). In the previous years I usually get 2 double down passes. I find that a better deal as you can use it to bridge the gaps between ski trips. It's also 100x better skiing/snowboarding during the day (I went primarily during the nights)!

DDUKI
10-15-2013, 03:09 PM
ZeroChalk Yes you can, but how did you buy the 5x7 last year?

1. REFUNDING PURCHASE: A pass holder who has not received any value from the pass may obtain a full refund of the price paid for the season pass on or before December 1, 2013. A written request for the refund together with return of the printed pass (if applicable) must be received by BMR on or before that date.

If that discounted lift ticket was registered in their system then you might have been deemed to have gotten "value" from your pass, otherwise everyone could have bought a season pass, got the $10 lift ticket then asked for a refund.

Prices were typical of end of season clearance stuff. I think if you keep a watchful eye on snowboard stuff you find better deals during the season during flash sales without the mayhem and craziness of the snowboard show. Not sure why time and time again I go... I guess I just like hanging with my friends and the off chance I see something I really want. Case in point, I saw a helmet at the snowboard show for $90 (which was OK). Didn't have my size. Found it online (w. coupon code) for $50 with the only caveat that I have to drive state side to pick it up. If you are not looking for anything specific then the ski&snowboard show is the best place to go - especially for people starting out. If you are well seasoned... you won't find the stuff you really want.

Can't wait for Febuary, unsure where i'm heading but i'm hunting down the mountians this year. Thinking Big Three, Lake Louise, Sunshine, Norquay, but i've heard amazing things about Revelstoke...

ZeroChalk
10-19-2013, 12:56 PM
Was there this past February - spent 3 weeks snowboarding all the big mountains from Calgary to Vancouver. Would recommend Lake Louise and Sunshine. You can take a shuttle bus from Banff to Kicking Horse. Revelstoke is a bit of a trek but worth it. Not so many lifts and not as refined as other big resorts. Big thing out west is to go split boarding (back country). With lots of snow don't expect clear visibility (white out conditions).

So I decided to start changing up my gear - but I'm still new at this.

My old set was a Kijiji find - Lamar board and flow bindings.

I came across a new board but can't decide if I should transfer over the flow bindings - or buy a new set.

What should I look for when buying a new set of bindings? I like the Flow's back release style - over the ratcheting mode (just for quickness)

im telling you burton makes one of the best bindings on the market, just make sure the bindings dont stick out over the board, you'll find the board will dig in on turns too much

If your bindings work fine and are comfortable you should just transfer over...I like the convenience of the flow bindings since you can just slip into it. I have the GNU ones and wouldn't go back to a regular ratcheting binding

I am definitely up for a Blue Mountian day. Only going to hit the slopes once or twice here in Onterrible this winter. My monies saving for west. Planning either
A) Stay with friends on Whistler Blackcomb
B) Rent car and drive into Banff area to ride primarily Sunshine (My Favourite thus far)
C) Take a leap of faith with a guy at my work and go to Panorama

As for bindings : Burton is DEFINITELY the industry leader. I have had my Burton Cartels on two different boards now with ZERO issues.

Burton is probably the most well know but it is easily debatable if it is the best. They put a lot of money in to advertising.

My preference for bindings is Flux. When I put my bindings side by side to a Burton you can easily notice the build difference. One of my friend's prefers Burton but it is surprising how many bindings straps, etc. he broke. These were the flagship bindings too. Good thing about Burton is their excellent customer service. They'll fedex parts to you (I think overnight) so you aren't wasting time at the ski resort.

I like Sunshine a lot. It was one of my favourite resorts and I've been to quite a few! Whister is good but the snow is not nearly as nice.

rukus

ive been riding, and working in the (boots & bindings specifically) industry for almost a decade, and burton does not make the best binding. it may be cheap, easily available, have cool colours, etc, but they have had few advancements in a while.

Binding wise, Flux, Gnu, even the new K2's are pretty killer

However, having been riding different versions of the Now Select bindings, i won't be riding anything else. They are incredible. have a powder feel even on garbage snow.

Buy new bindings when your old ones are broken or look like crap.

I upgraded my board this year, I expect a way bigger difference (kids board to real board lol)

ZeroChalk
11-11-2013, 07:40 PM
I don't think you need the latest bindings year to year but I also don't think you can apply a blanket statement like that. I moved to a very flexible binding and felt the difference on the first run.

You won't notice is a difference if you are taking a leisurely run down the hill at low speed in better bindings. It's no different than a car ... you only feel the difference at high speed or when you push the car or the bindings to their limits ... THEN the difference is pretty obvious.

I'm not a speed demon, but its not like I was doing leisurely rides down the hill - all I do is tricks and jumps all the way down. I would have thought "better" bindings would have made a diff for me, but they didn't. Could be that my cheapo bindings were actually good, that is another possibility lol... only ever had the two sets.

11-13-2013, 04:11 AM
If you are a noob...dont bother with expensive bindings. Get some from Kijiji if you absolutely have to...otherwise just keep the ones you have and upgrade when you get better. And if you feel compelled to spend money, buy the best boots that you can afford. Comfortable boots are the best investment you will make

rukus
11-13-2013, 09:36 PM
as had been said, if you're learning, boots are the second most important thing. first purchase should be a helmet. theyre pretty cheap. don't rent them. they are designed to be abused like they are.

boots are most important. don't jump right to boas, tying laces doesnt require as much strength as people think.

if you're buying a board. try to find one with magnatraction or the like. its worth it.

THEStorm
11-13-2013, 10:30 PM
Proper fitting boots are very important. You want them to fit very snug! A helmet is more important for a beginner (along with knowing how to fall properly (ie. don't put your hands out, you will break your wrists)). Most helmets are only designed to take 1 blow then then be tossed out, so invest in a good quality, comfortable fitting (or you wont wear it) helmet.

As for bindings you can get inexpensive decent quality ones. Don't worry about all the bells and whistles in the beginning, just something descent to learn with and then later down the road get the bells and whistles.

I used to work at a board shop and my favorite brand always was Salomon, had very good luck will all of their products.

anyone thinking about going to Louis during early season rates should definitely give it a go. Was up all day today there and conditions were great! Not much pow, but the corduroy was nice and there were some softer runs. Park is in great shape too, the 40' booter at the bottom is so smooth as long as you clear the knuckle (found out the hard way a couple times lol). Lift lines were non-existent, just lapped all day!

We need to get together up north one of these days guys and gals!

Not a lot of options at this time.

Went to MSLM today. It was pretty good, a bit icy. First time back at a decent sized hill in a few years. I picked it back up quick and managed to make it into the park to hit some of the smaller jumps and fun boxes. good times.

I was at the Orchard over the weekend for the first time. Fun... a bit difficult for beginners with the narrow trails and ice (kids / fallen people were blocking most of the trail). You can't really slow down too much because of the ice on the ground. The cross over back was fun (felt somewhat like a boarder cross event) but again felt sorry for beginners on the trail as it's pretty narrow with the trees dropping on one side. They definitely need more snow on the connecting runs.

This is the only fun thing about snowboarding in Ontario.
Only thing I really miss is ripping handrails with these kids.

Yupp pretty icey on the orchard side...that being said, really enjoyed it this weekend. I did a couple of the trails there and was satisfied

If you have a friend with a VW get them to register electronically and you can get TWO-4-ONE lift tickets, unlimited times!

Except Saturdays, but still an amazing deal if you don't have a pass

I got a pair and used it for the past weekend.
Since you sign up for vwplus and register a valid vin, you can enroll for a pair of tickets.
