View Full Version : The Official Snowboarders/Skiiers Thread

With the slow decent in temperature and all the winter tire talk, its hard to not start thinking of the upcoming snow season. That being said, the search for snowboarding gear begins! Just thought I'd start a thread for all the powder junkies out there and see what are people's current set up, what are you looking at picking up, where you ride and your favourite board shops.
Currently my setup:
'08 Burton Custom with '07 Custom bindings and '06 Burton Motos. Looking at switching the boots out to either the '08 or maybe the '09 Motos.
Where I ride:
Typically up at Blue because of proximity but will ride anywhere given the chance.
Frequented shops:
Ski/Snowboard show is a must, Boardzone(rebranded, don't know their new name), Hogstown, Empire(online), The Boardshop(London)
If anyone is interested (I know we always say this) but lets do a TM3 day at Blue.

Maybe a poll of boarders vs 2-plankers?
I'm old(er) - I'm a 2-planker - Volkl carving skis
We have a place 1/2 way between Horseshoe and Louis

Skiier here:P
Currently my setup:
'06 Dynastar Troublemakers (twintips when in the park) with Look P10 bindings
'05' Atomic Beta Carve 9.18 (groomers/racing) with Atomic bindings (forgot the model)
Where I ride:
Normally at Oshawa Ski Club, used to work there, haven't for a few seasons but nice hills for only an hours drive from Toronto.
Occasionally MSLM and Blue as well.
Frequented shops:
-Ski/Snowboard show
-Too poor to frequent more shops
+1 on the blue trip.

I was only able to go once last year, as my daughter was born in November. So I'm itchn' to hit the slopes.
The places I frequent for snowboarding are Blue Mountain, Talisman, and Horseshoe.
With the economy the way it is, going up on a bus (greyhound, laidlaw, etc.) would make more sense. Depending on the # of people, you can get the travel both ways and leift ticket for around $40-$50... that's what I did last year.

Boarder here... Hopefully I'll be mentally ready to go this year. Got out 2 times last year (after buying a season's pass at Blue :flaming ), and then broke my leg pretty bad. Ended my season. Hoping that the brain doesn't prevent me from getting back to it this year.
I go pretty much exclusively to Blue, as both my aunt/uncle & grandparents have condos there, right beside each other, across from the hill. I think that getting a trip up there would be awesome. I'll probably be there, anyways :chuckle

I'm likely in the very small minority here, but I'm a Ski Boarder. Running Head 99cm ski boards, with release bindings. Salomon flex boots to put it all together. I typically by a 5*7 pass for Blue. Though, I have been to Tremblant a few times before. Went to Horseshoe once last year, and would never go again. Hills were in terrible conditions the day after a snow fall.

I used to board a lot but haven't been out in a few years. :( I keep saying I want to go out but I never do. I definitely want to pick it back up this year though.
Current gear (all older stuff)
Board: Ride Fleetwood
Bindings: Ride EX
Boots: Vans (hopefully will be replaced with sometihng from the ski/snowboard show)
We should definitely do a TM3 day, at least once!

Whiteface mountain - New York

You mean snow blades. :chuckle I use them most of the time. Have a set of 85cm Salomon blades. Good stuff. Especially with a really comfortable boot. Just wish I could find one with a bit more flex....
Plan this year is dust off my old short Head semi-parabolics and get back into long stuff. Haven't used them in 6 years of so, they're only 150's. Advantage is they're a lot cheaper than new kit, and as I only get out 5 times a year or so...
Though, I have been to Tremblant a few times before.
Tremblant is AWESOME. Me and buds try to hit it twice a year. Other favorite hill is Mt Ste. Marie. Both are about 2 hours away, good drive but damn. Hills are worth it.

Check out these rossignol Soft Light 3 boots:http://www.skiboards.com/product/skiboardboots/rossignol/rossignol-soft-light-3-ski-boots.html
Supposed to be the best boots for flex. I bought a pair last year, but got the wrong size...have to sell them and order the right size soon.

I'm a blader too!! :chuckle I use 99cm Atomic ETL, very fast, but yes very stiff. When I want something (much) more flexible I use my 151cm Atomic Metron 9's. They are good all-round skis and turn on a dime.

I ride with a Rossi board and Burton P1 Bindings. (may change up my board this year). Usually get a 5x7 pass and you can find me almost every saturday night at Blue. Moonstone, if people don't want to drive.
I also try to make a trip out to Vermont / Quebec each season... but I really want to move out west.
If you like tremblant, you should definitely try Mt St Anne or Le Massif. (though village life is desolate).
I'd be up for a TM3 meet to go boarding or skiing!

I just started this year and after one month of renting I bought my own gear. I'm hooked. For quick / last minute board sessions, I go to Dagmar and Lakeridge. Otherwise, Blue Mountain is it.
Also wanted to add, there is a se of Goggles I really want to buy: Scott Heli OTG with night amplifier lens. Only places I can find are online in the US, anyone have suggestions?
I have Smith Spectra OTG's. They're pretty decent although they're big, not the biggest, but still. I saw a nice OTG made by Alpina I believe. It's a much slimmer design with a decent selection of lenses. Now that I bought new glasses which sit closer to my face, I'll definitely be trying on the Alpina's.

sauga_kid
10-16-2008, 05:53 PM
Yeah, pretty good deals. For the '09 stuff, best you'll probably get is tax off, unless you're buying a lot of stuff but even then, they're really hesitant to give you more off. If you dont' mind previous models, lots of deals to be had. FYI, if anyone needs anything, take a look at www.backcountryoutlet.com (http://www.backcountryoutlet.com) Use this coupon code: 38M-1-GGDSP to get up to 50% off. ie. if it's already 30% off, you'll get an additional 20% only draw back is that they ship from the states however I've heard that its a flat rate and you shouldn't get dinged with the brokerage fees etc. but don't take my word for it, that's just what I've heard. Happy shopping peeps!

Dropped by the show last night, and as ZeroChalk said, it was packed. Picked up my new boots and loving them, can't wait to hit the slopes. My brother picked a pair of Burton Cargo pants, original price $200, for $85. Also picked up the 5X7's so I'm good to go, all I need is some snow!

heading there tonight..hopefully some stuff left, although I don't need any big equipment. My buddy might though. (If he decides to buy..he needs new stuff anyway). I think that older years stuff should be much better than if he waited til December/January and bought stuff in stores, no?
sauga_kid
10-17-2008, 12:10 PM
Yeah, it should be better dependant on what it is and what kind of pricing you're looking at. For example, the boots that I picked up are the 09's, I had fully intended on picking up the '08's to save some money but they were only $30 less, and for the improvements they made to the design, I figured, what's $30. With a board on the other hand, the mark down is quite significant, for instance the board I picked up last year is a $600-$700 board (I didn't pay that much), it sells for $400 now.

10-17-2008, 12:19 PM
This is the time to buy if he want's good deals on last years model. Research the equipment and go. Alternatively, he can wait till end of season when the prices are comparable. You would be hard pressed to find last year's stuff in the store in December as it would be 09.
I wasn't thinking of buying a new board.. but my friend's had me thinking last night. If you see some Rome boards could you inquire about the price of a 08 Agent 156?

I'll make a note of that zerochalk. But I'm not a boarder so I might not recognize it as easily haha, but I'll check it out none the less. Yeah I figured as much in term sof last years models... He could wait til the end of the season but then he'd have to rent all season (he doesn't have skis).

If you pick UPS standard(tariff included) there are NO additional taxes/customs/duties however some brands cannot be shipped across the border.

I'm done with this crappy snow - these conditions are not fun to board in. If I lived out West I'd be saying SNOW SNOW SNOW!!
I managed to get out at least 6-7 times this season though. Happy with that...

Hey, just watched your 2nd run. That's pretty much my fav run at Tremblant. Looked like you were booting it down the hill...took me way longer hahaha!

I went boarding in the rain last weekend @ Blue... pretty productive considering the slopes were completely empty (only a handful of us). We were betting on the scattered showers would turn to wet flurries, or stop periodically. Too bad it didn't.
I'd like to go to Whiteface in Vermont before the season is over, anyone? TM3 meet in Lake Placid? lol.
This weather has prematurely ended the Ontario snowboard season. I definitely don't mind going for one more trip. I only boarded for one day at Tremblant. Time change plus being a first timer on a real mountain, I was sore Sunday morning.
I love flying down the runs. It's all about speed for me hahah. Five minutes from peak to base at Tremblant vs less than one minute at Blue Mountain ... what a shame. What's Whistler gonna be like? Fifteen minutes? :D
Let me know in advance tho, ZeroChalk regarding Whiteface. I might be able to take a couple days off BEFORE the weekend of 28th this month.
Season is over but I'm not ready to pack it all up yet.

Yah, I think everyone feel's kinda ripped off how fast the season went!
I don't know how long it'll take to zip down from the top of Whistler or Blackcomb to the base. It really depends on which runs, as you have to take connecting runs to get to the bottom (you need to take multiple gondalas / chairlifts to the top - there is no direct way). I assume for most people it'll take about 40min - 1.5 hour+ to get down? Not to knock down Tremblant, but they're in two different categories.
Whiteface would be a 5.5 to 6 hour drive each way. Let me look in to the pricing / weather. I know the lift tickets are cheaper now... about $55US but let's see if I can find a package deal at a hotel.
For those wondering.. Whiteface claims to have the greatest vertical drop in the east... 3,430 feet.
tweak_s
03-10-2009, 02:35 PM
3430 feet... would be sick. lol, well.. if everything falls okay into place i wouldn't mind taking a few days off school lol. (long as i can let someone grab some of my shifts at work).
I'm glad I'm not working on the hill this year, would've been pissed that the season got cut short lol. March break is nomrally cram time.

Was at Tremblant this past weekend too. Just hit the green and blue slopes. Freaking icy conditions. Not that experienced so high speed runs are out of the question.
I was just looking at wtom's videos trying to see if he video taped me. LOL.
Whiteface
I'm in. But only if we get back before Monday 29th of March. :)
I still have a few other vids that aren't as "fast" so possibly might have caught vanpatrick in them. Will advise when I've posted LOL

I'm thinking of the 27-29th... Drive up on the Friday. Hang around Lake Placid (visit the old Olympic village), Snowboard/Ski Sat and Sun, return back Sunday night.
^^^ Works for me. But... damn weather better get cold and snow again!
Eff me, I already committed to a friend's bday that Saturday.
Guess I gotta put the snowboarding gear to storage. >(

that's too bad.. pricing would be about $80usd (including lift) ppn. I've asked some of my friends so we're trying to figure out who can make it. I estimate with gas, food, etc. trip would be around the $300cad range.

Whiteface...me and my friends are also thinking of going on last weekend in March. Maybe we should meet up there. Although we're only planning on driving friday night, board saturday, nice dinner then drive back after dinner so back here in GTA in the morning.
Damn, not a bad budget to board at an even bigger mountain!
Yeah I can't get out of the bday. It's booked at my condo party room under my name; I'd have to be there regardless. That and my friend will kill me if I ditch him for snowboarding hahaha

I was gonna wait until Oct.1st (which is actually 2 hours away) but I don't care. We're already in single digit temperatures haha! :chuckle
So to kick it off, the 2009 Toronto Ski & Snowboard Show (http://www.sportshows.ca/SkiShow/) is just 2 weeks away. It runs from Oct.15-18. Picked up some good deals on a board bag and helmet for myself last year. My cousin also walked out with a full setup (board, boots, bindings & helmet) for under $300 I believe. We also planned a Banff trip with the reps there. Banff is sick! Sunshine Village, Lake Louise...highly recommended.
This year, I'm just gonna browse for another set of pants and a jacket, maybe another pair of boots. I'll also be getting some info for the next trip...MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN (http://www.mammothmountain.com/MountainActivities/WinterActivities/Maps/) in California! :headbang Can't wait!!
Hope we get better conditions this season. I'm stoked! Am I the only one who can't wait for winter to arrive?? (I know some of you are thinking I'm :loco lol)

you want a sick time a good deal a good mountain and nice accommodations,
well last year, the first weekend in december me and 7 buddies hit up smugglers notch for BrewFest. 3 day lift ticket, accommodations, a pass into brewfest, all for 169 bucks. Thats usually the cost of a night in a hotel. The snow was a little icy because it was the beginning of the year, but the good time and the other people there that want a good time, can't be beat at the beginning of the year. It was sick, my friends and i stayed in an 8 person condo and there was tons of room.
if this sounds good to you just go to the smugglers notch webpage and check it out.
Even had a sick mazdaspeed 3 parked in front of me.
needless to say were going back again this year, even if there isn't snow.

Don't forget you get discounts on any Intrawest Resort with the purchase of a 5x7 or super pass so those going to tremblant and whistler i believe there is a 20% discount on lodging and 50% off lift tickets.

I, like most of you probably live about a 2 hour drive away from Blue. I finish work at 5pm. At best, if I leave work right away in the winter, I'm not looking at getting up north until at least 7:30-8pm depending on traffic/weather phenomenons etc. That leaves you with 2 hours to board since they close at 10pm, then another drive back down home. And if you wanna go on a weekend you can't use the pass anyways.
And well, forget about going during the day in the week - I'm not that lucky to get a day off. hahaha unless I work a weekend and get a lieu day.
*sigh* anyone else agree??

I see where you're coming from crystal, I think the same thing sometimes as well, but you are able to use it on the weekends, just for nights only though. I duck out a little bit early on Friday's sometimes and try to make it up to get a good 3-4 hours of riding in and its well worth it as Friday nights I find are so empty. On the weekends, you can start the trek up there to make it in time for the beginning of night skiing/boarding and perhaps convince your boss for a day off here or there (or maybe you might not be feeling too well to go into work but are up for riding). If you can make it up 3 or 4 nights and possibly a day, you definitley get your money's worth. I'm in the north end of Brampton and I just shoot up Airport Rd. and I'm there in about an hour or so, so its a little easier for me but I see you point.

well it's 170 dollars plus tax.
weekdays = Day/night
Weekends = Night
If a lift pass is 35 dollars, if you go 6 times, you've already saved some money. I also live 2 hours away, but it's still worth it. Also, it works at any intrawest run resort so if you decide to make a trip to Mt. Tremblent, it will work there as well (i think...i'm gonna have to double check that).

It depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking to get a good deal on 2010 stuff, you probably will only get no tax at the most unless you are buying multiple higher end items, you may be able to talk them down a little more. For older model stuff, you can score some good deals but as ZeroChalk said, go either Thursday or Friday to get the best pickings. A lot of the vendors usually have their own sales in the following weeks also, so if you miss out at the show, check and see if they have anything coming up.

Anybody going to the ski/snowboard this weekend? I've never been... are the deals worth it?
I grabbed some bindings last year, but need a new deck.
I know someone who will be working there.. he said the best time to buy is in the last 2 hours of the show on the Sunday
a week and a little bit till the show!!! I'm pretty interested in what other people are riding this year i'm probably going to grab a new deck and boots this year. What are your set-ups?? I'm riding the Endeavour Next series right now...going to jump to the live series for a little more pop, if I can find the board at the show with Salomon Relay Pro bindings with the Salomon Dialogues.

I have a Burton Rush 164, franken bindings that consist of old Burton CFX's and C60's with cap straps, and Burton Sabbath boots. I want a new board AND bindings this year but should probably not spend all that coin at once, I don't get out as often as I used to.
It's Blue Mountain, there's no such thing as fresh powder :P
I usually go Sundays to get there and be ready to hit the slopes by 4:15pm with my 5x7. I hardly ever go Saturdays. Way too many people.
Weekdays, I go when I can. Shift work allows me some weeks to be off 12pm and I still have vacation days which I will take one-here-one-there just to hit the slopes at BM. No more super mini-hills that are the other "resorts" in Ontario. It's BM or outside of Ontario.
I live in Markham and it takes me about 1 hr 45 mins (after getting caught speeding on Hwy 26 hehe) one way. 404 up to Davis, over to 400 up to Bayfield ... yada yada. :)
Ok. is the 5x7 really worth it?

I've been debating this since last year and I kind of agree! I don't know too many people who are dedicated enough to go to Blue on a regular. My situation is I can only go on the weekend and that's if nothing else is planned. Not much availability outside of that. Honestly, I think we'd have to go at least 5 times to break even. For me, it would be worth it if winter started early...like NOW! :chuckle

Is this the March trip that you went to Tremblant or before that? The March trip was like ice skating down. LOL.
Me and my friends usually try to leave work early on Fridays like 3:30, go home and change and be on the road by about 4:30. Get to BM at around 6 (since I live on the North end of Brampton) and get a good 4 hour of riding. Then we try to do the same thing again on Saturday pending everybody's schedule. Sunday night is the best time to ride if you are ok going to work the next day a way bit tired. lol. Once it hits like 7 on Sundays, BM tends to become empty so you get to ride solo sometimes.
We have a group trip planned out for January 21 to 24 to Lake Placid, Whiteface. Price is set at around $375 right now for accommodations, bus ride and lift tickets. If more people join in, the price will keep on going down so if anybody is interested, let me know.

Hey...if you lived in Collingwood like me you would know that Blue and the others get lots of good powder days....you just have to be able to call in sick the morning after the streamers come in off Georgian Bay!
For us, the 5 X 7 is nothing short of a miracle. The average local skier gets out 1-2 nights a week, perhaps a morning or two also and then the smart folks always ski Sunday nights...there is no one on the hills. Consider....a Tuesday morning after a big dump of snow, puting your gear on in the north chair parking lot and on the hill as the lift opens, skiing for an hour or two until the freshie is scraped off but by then you have put in 20 fast runs because you just ski right on the lift, then go to work and still put in almost a full day.
Life is sweet north of the city folks!

Lots! LOL I can't believe that people live in the city and actually enjoy it. I'll take the commute any day. I am close to Toronto, snowboarding, Algonquin, Muskoka. I love being North of the Big Smoke! Being downtown depresses me if I'm not working, or at a Leafs game, or going to a show.
I'll tell you one thing though...I'm going to be putting those shiny new Gislaved Nordfrost 5's from SimplyTire to good use however...

I find there is nothing to do in the city...at all really. When the workday is done the city kind of winds down, there is shopping, clubbing and generally inside things to do, and when you live there, it is so far to go anywhere...like snowboarding, or Wasaga/Muskoka, any type of camping or anywhere that is...pretty and doesn't smell like sewer.
Just my opinion, LOL. Don't get me wrong I love the city, but I just couldn't live there. I spend enough time there for work to quench my thirst for the city! I wouldn't move too far away, but I wouldn't live too close either.
Boy did I just open myself up for a whole lotta Barrie jokes!

I guess its that old urban/rural thing...although it is hard to think of Collingwood as rural any more....have you folks seen what is going on up here with development? Its true that 10 years ago you had a choice of either burgers or pizza but now I could take you to at least 15 places to eat within 20 km of town hall that would certainly impress you. Thank the investment made by Interwest for that.
The other 10 months of the year? Are you kidding? Only Ontarios best mountain biking, the only dedicated and lift accessed downhill park available, unbelievably good road riding (I mean cycling but it is easy to tell from the number of motorcycles ripping around on the weekends that they like it too), simple access to Georgian Bay (clean water that you aren't afraid to swim in) an excellent paddling facility at the Collingwood Dragon Boat and Canoe Club, small and large boat sailing, the worlds largest freshwater beach (Wasaga of course) only 10 minutes away, outstanding sailboard and kite boarding, multiple access points to the Bruce Trail and very good caving, rock climbing and bouldering....I'm afraid the list goes on an on. If you are stoked about outdoor activities, this is the place to be. Oh yea...interested in golf? You have to see Raven at Lora Bay, The Georgian Bay Club, Oslerbrook, Monterra at Blue, etc, etc.
I appreciate the big city for what it has to offer....I lived there briefly a long time ago (I lasted a little over a year!) but I really love it 2 hours away...in fact I am driving down today to pick up floorliners and winter wheels from TM3sponsors.
Come on up and spend some time in the area when there isn't snow on the mountain and I guarantee, you will be driving back to Toronto thinking of how you can quit your job and earn a living up here!:chuckle

I've been using a K2 Disciple for the last few seasons. Really stiff, fast board. Burton Cartel bindings with the cap straps. My boots are Burton as well but I might look into getting some Salomons this year since their getting pretty uncomfortable.
No roof rack for the car. I'll just throw em in the back. I'll still be able to get someone in the back seat which is better than I could say for my old MX3. :chuckle

+1 3 boards fit comfortably in the back, with one person. although i've done 2 in the back and 4 boards. it's squished but boarding times call for boarding measures. hehe
:chuckle Sorry. We need some snow, I'm itching to hit the slopes!

Am I one of the few skiers here? I'm glad that I can fit equipment comfortable in my car and still have room for a few people...gotta love it!
Taz, I'm one too :).

Yes! It seems we're a dying breed :P Skiing is far more fun (I say this as someone who is capable and has done both)...and it's WAY faster...and I like speed :)

As someone who is also capable of both, you should really try my board out if you feel that skiing is faster. I have yet to be passed by a skier in the 3 seasons I've used it. It's an all around board too, not a hard boot alpine. :chuckle

Well...if we ever get a TM3 ski/board meet going down then we can put it to the test. As for me trying it out...well, it's been quite some time since I've boarded and would definitely not want to strap a board on and go all out. Not to mention, I'd need boots in my size :P
I guess I could call myself a hybrid.

Skiing just looks gay though. All that twisting while going down the hill. Oh, and your cute little poles!
:gone
While on this "hybrid" topic, I saw a guy last year who was bound into a really fat ski with both feet facing forward, it was really weird. Anyone know what those are called?

Agree with you burner but to be fair, while I am not a snowboarder, I ride with almost all boarders. Skiing IS faster unless you're on an alpine board if we're comparing a good skiier and a good snowboarder.
The boarders I ride with are CASI instructors and I'm a CSIA instructor we both have a bit of racing exp. and if we're both booking they can't keep up.. mainly its chucked up to skis being longer.
Boarders can be definitely fast though, as you gotta keep in mind theres a lot of just "weekend warrior" skiiers who won't be quick.
I guess I could call myself a hybrid.

Not a fan of skiboards (but to each their own), but I'm on twin tips (well depends on the day...) :P, hit the park all day then got the hills haha.

If its just one piece PCLoadLetter, that would be an alpine SNOWBOARD. (aka racing board)

This was NOT a snowboard. The guy was on an extremely narrow contraption, a bit thicker than a ski but definitely not a snowboard. He also had ski poles.

Hmm... if its one piece though it can't be considered skis either lol. A true hybrid? LOL :chuckle

That's an alpine (carving) board. It uses hard boots like ski's do. I've always wanted to try it since the lean angles and speed look intense. :headbang

I saw one of those as well. He was a European guy, and said he bought it there. I saw him at Blue Mountain.

Seen quite a few of those before, mostly at Blue and have seen some at Tremblant as well. Not 100% sure what it is but I just figured it was to help practice good form/carving.
Also, I've seen boards with bindings for ski boots...kinda amusing to watch a guy go down a hill on a snowboard in ski boots.

LOL...
Well to be fair we got a lot of extra time at the end of last season! :winner
Unfortunatly there are no refunds allowed based on the weather conditions...they put in new restrictions last year because of the complaints they recieved for the bad season 2 years ago. I believe the deadline to get a full refund on your 5x7 was last week...i was contemplating canceling my 5x7 so I checked it out.

Yeah the only thing right now is that I could afford to either go on a trip or to get a new setup, but not both. I think I'd rather make do with what I have and go on a trip, than buy the set and sit down and look at it waiting for next time

I'll buy it off you for $100!! LOL
i'll buy for $101 =P jk jk....I was looking at prices for Lake Louise and a 3 night stay, 2 days lift tickets and transfer from Calgary to the hotel (there and back) at the Banff Inn is about $419 per person, I am actually looking at doing a group thing for my friends in February. with 6+ people it would be $50 off that price...so the only things that would be expensive is the flight =S
