Had my bank card cancelled again because of suspected fraud. This time, they actually made a fake $800 deposit, took it out and then another 200 bucks. The bank had to do a fraud investigation before they reimbursed me the thousand bucks. Pain in the butt. Will try to avoid using debit at gas stations, the bank tells me that a lot of pins are taken there.

I always pay at the pump now (I only get gas at Esso though because you can't get Petro Points at the pump :flaming) after having my bank card froze 2 years ago. I recently had it skimmed at a Wendys as well, already had a thread on that.

yeah i think i recall reading that thread.. not sure how bank cards work, but dont they need you bank card number as well, not just the pin#? On the receipts its blocked out half of it.. so how does it work?

also, be very scared of those individual atm machines.... I am always scared to use those and never do unless really have to.

Definitely agree with this one. If possible, always use an ATM from your bank... if you can't, find one that belongs to another bank... I find atm owned by actual banks to be safer...
Always protect your pin! Try and move to a "chip" card if possible. Its a lot safer and harder to copy.

use a credit card at gas station? I never had an issue.
I use the citi-petro points credit card
chip cars are not any safer ... you can use any satellite card programmer that sells for $30

the reader is replaced with one that also copies the information off the magnetic stripe. if it is one of the older copiers, the dubious worker will swipe your card twice and tell you to cancel the first swipe or that something was wrong, then swipe again (first being the copy, the 2nd being legit).
then, they can either grab your pin from an overhead camera (or one placed strategically to record the pin pad) or they've replaced the keypad where you enter your pin with one of their own that datalogs the keys pressed...correlate the times with the key logger/camera and the mag stripe copy, download the mag stripe info onto a 'blank' card and they've got all they need to compromise your bank account.
so, cover the keypad when you enter your pin...without the pin, they've just got your card info.

i've had problems with 2 company credit card at the same gas station and i paid at the pumps. the credit card company said that they were double charging the cards. they just cancelled the credit card and sent me a new one.

I think you're right. It's the opposite at Esso.

I just got mine in the mail 2 days ago and am itching to try it out... but my car needs no gas yet...

Actually, its harder to copy, not harder to program.
The card has to be placed inside the reader that has a prongs to come down and collect information. Unlike the stripes which can be read easily by some simple tweaks in the reader.
