Hey guys. I got a question about UPS shipping. So i got a letter saying i still owe them brokerage. I asked one of the guys that works at UPS and ask him that if they don't collect the brokerage on the day of delivery, they can't charge me back afterwards right? I was not there at the time of delivery but my mom was and she said that she didn't have to pay anything and got the package on hand. Anyone have any ideas if i need to pay this or i don't? thanks.

The letter was from RMS = North American Receivable Management Services Company

Whenever I buy something from the US and it was shipped by UPS I get something in the mail later about the brokerage fees and whatnot. I always call them and pay with my VISA over the phone. I think it's to the head office in NB. My train of thought is that if I don't pay them, eventually they will stop delivering things and hold my packages until I am paid up, not sure.

Sometimes if I am really slow getting to it they call a couple times and leave an automated message.

i've hadn't had any letters from ups but i did get one from fedex about 4 weeks later after i received the package, saying that i owe them custom fees and bokerage fees. i don't think that i should pay it when they just left the package at my door...if they wanted money for it they should have made me pick it up and pay for it then...

Once I bought a CBE for my TL ($1100) from Comptech in the US and UPS sent me an invoice with customs charge..
Did you buy it over seas or across the border?

I avoid UPS due to the absurd brokerage fees - they tried to stiff me with a $53.00 brokerage fee on a $35 item once (not heavy or anything) - they also dropped it off at my house and then sent a notification for the brokerage fee - I called them, gave them heck, and ignored it. Usually they won't deliver it to you until you pay the brokerage fee.
I now use a brokerage company that will handle it for you, their cost starts at $5 and is usually a 1/4 the cost of UPS fees. I HATE UPS - but I'll save that for another thread. :)

UPS brokerage fees are very high. I once got charged $40 for a $120 item. I had to pay them as they would not release my parcel until I paid them.

Basically it was my cousin that bought it for us as a gift and it was a kitchen aid cookware set. $300 from ebay. Got it delivered to my house and dropped it off. They didn't ask for brokerage fees or anything according to what my mom said prior to delivery.

Yes they can deliver the package without asking the customs and brokerage fee at the door and charge to your address later on.
When my company changed the address same thing happened and we kept getting the letter from RMS as well. We eventually ended up paying the fee because they stopped getting the package.

Only options I see for you is, pay it or don't pay it and never use UPS.

Another thing you can do is, call RMS tell them you never received anything from UPS and that you need a proof.
We actually tried that, out of 5 letters we got, I think we only ended up paying 3 of them.

last year a friend of mine in the US shipped me some clothing that was worth about $300. I got the UPS bill for customs and the brocerage agency and they wanted $500 and they wanted it payed before I could pick up my package. I wasn't impressed with UPS at all. I finally ended up only paying the taxes but I honestlly don't know where they came up with $500.

Ive gotten some from ups and fedex before. they usually came a few months after the purchase.
i got fedex back for all that. ordered a pair of oakleys online. no one was home so they put them in the flower pot and signed fedex. i saw them. looked online at who signed for them. saw it was fedex so called a few days later asking where my package was. got a 300$ pair of oakleys for their ****up haha

And you're admitting this online? There might be a FedEx employee or two who own Mazda3's and are on here.

what exactly are they supposed to do if they see this. not much they can do if they have no proof

Probably right, but I think it's a good rule of thumb to never admit any kind of wrongdoing online no matter what can be proven.

to be fair, the FedEx employee should never have left the items in the flowerpot signed as received by themselves.

back on topic:

While I've never had a brokerage letter from UPS, I always find such things a little suspicious when they come after the fact. It seems to me like a sneaky and underhanded way of making money off unsuspecting people.

I would think you'd have to pay upon delivery. Before you pay, what I'd do is call UPS back directly and ask them what this brokerage letter is about; Don't call RMS, call UPS and get the word from them. If they say the letter is genuine, then you might as well pay it.

On the other hand, if they say it's hogwash, then don't pay it and report the company charging you.

for the ones i got from ups. now only remember them vagely but i think they were yellow copies and had the ups logo on the top. not sure if the number and stuff was RMS but thats what i remember.

the most expensive one i got was 75$ for the deck when i got it.

does seem kind of odd that you have to pay upon delivery to ups and then after delivery you have to pay some other company.

maybe we should start a major investigation:chuckle

it is odd; which is why i suggest calling UPS directly, using the number on their website or one from the original shipping label/packing slip, it it's there.

There's nothing to lose in double-checking the invoice, and everything to gain :D

Could you let us know the outfit you use? And what you need to do to get the brokerage handled by them?

They are a Canadian company based in BC. Typically when you place an order, specify their contact info that they will give you as your customs broker - you put their contact info in the "info" spot - fedex, ups, whatever, they will then contact that company to "process" the border fee - was very easy to get set up with them. There are a few similar companies.

P.S. I hate UPS!! (I usually ask for them to ship via USPS - $5 brokerage fees - and I typically won't order from a company that only uses UPS)
Also watch what people charge for shipping, the higher the brokerage fee, the less the sender shipping usually - when I lived in the states you could ship a rather large package to Canada for $5 UPS ground when they had specials - the receever would then get the rest of the bill!!
