This is the best news I've heard in a long time! Fark'n people on their cells!!

But some of you guys are getting the wrong idea; aslong as it's hands free it's fine, using your GPS or having your stereo going or using a hands-free cell phone will be okay....according to what I've heard and read.

By the way anyone notice the Blue Mz3 hatch in the video clip? :chuckle

I always use a bluetooth anyway. Holding a phone and driving manual is just downright dangerous.

As long as thats not limited..and I'm allowed to use my ipod to play music I'm okay.

Honestly, i'm very happy that people can't hold a phone and drive now, too many people do it and these people cant' drive for jack.

"there are reports it will prohibit all use of phones, BlackBerrys and GPS devices by drivers in this province, with the possible exception of hand's-free devices"

According to the line above, they would also ban GPS.

I would actually prefer they ban eating, applying make-up & reading. Those are more distracting then the GPS.

the gps one is dumb, you set it when you leave or are stationary and it is not a distration

whiteomega

I support this law; Driving is not an automatic process. It's something you have to pay attention for.

Mythbusters did a test to see how dangerous it is to drive with various distractions. While it's a limited test, it turns out that it's more dangerous for someone to drive while talking on a cell phone than it is for them to drive while drunk.

stormin84
10-25-2008, 11:16 AM
there also saying that they are banning ipods so now you can't even listen to the radio....i guess the newer cars now are going to eliminate the AUX input in the cars since you cant listen to anything anymore.

Are we forgetting about all the other distractions that are not technology based?

Smoking
Eating / drinking
Checking your hair / adding makeup
Pets
Other people

Arguably some are worse than others, but if we are on the way of making laws to ban any distractions....

It seems more and more as time goes on that we now have to pass laws to make up for people's lack of common sense....
Texting wil driving 100km/h on the highway
Smoking in confined areas with small children
the list goes on.

correction guys, you can use GPS as long as it come standard or an option on the car from manufacture of course.

What am i going to do with my garmin now ><

Fobio
10-28-2008, 02:34 PM
GPS has to be MOUNTED...as long as it's not handheld as in outdoor/iPhone/BlackBerry GPS, then it's ok...

using your iPod/iTouch is banned...

the way I see it, ppl should be driver-tested while they're on the handsfree...if they can't pass that, they shouldn't be given a license...think about it...

Seems so, though it may be a case of the spirit of the law getting enforced, even though the letter of the law says otherwise. It's one time officer's discretion actually helps solve a problem ;)

It's about time; I'm totally for this. I see people make bad moves all the time on the road or drive way too slow on the highway while talking on the phone.

Hell, just last week on the DVP I saw some lady in a white mz3 talking on the phone. No turn signal, she just switches lanes and pushed a guy in Vdub off the road. When everything settled down, I pulled up next to her and she's just smiling her a$$ off talking away on a cell.

I have to agree with a lot of the other posts. There are still lots of distractions in the car. I just saw a lady burning a hoolie in the car behind me in the garage today. Yes, she was driving...

Fuman
10-28-2008, 08:13 PM
They need a new G classification where they test to see if you can talk and drive.
I don't see a difference between talking to your passenger and on the cellphone.
If you are dialing on your cell phone or SMSing that is a different story.

or what I do, use a headset jack, plug it to your RCA jacks at the back of the deck and set your radio to aux or video.

So when i get a call while I am listening to my music the sound fades and the phone picks up. Automatic speakerphone. Your speakers acts as a headset and microphone as my mic. The only problem is my blackberry. It will look weird having two seperate jacks split to answer my phones LOL.

Yeah, but mounted where?

The article says "GPS units mounted on dashboards" is allowed.

So does that mean that I can't mount my Garmin on my windshield but if I mounted on my dash it's okay? I really hope they clear this up soon.

Yeah, there are a lot of grey areas..

But from this article in The Star: http://www.wheels.ca/article/436489

"I won't say we are staying away from GPSs ... but as long as it is mounted to the car it will be allowed," the government source added. "Portable GPS, in the hands or in BlackBerrys, are covered under the ban."

It looks like as long as it's mounted in your car, not necessarily to your dash, it's alright. At least this is how I'd interpret this quote.

Another grey area would be - can you use your phone when you're stopped at a red light? Or do you need to be pulled over to the side of the road in order to use your phone?

yes, mounted, windshield or dash is fine...no handhelds...

CityTV specifically said iPod and fiddling with gadgets at redlights are also banned...so no calls at the redlight either...

Best ones i see are people who read their Harlequin novel while driving, searching for something in the back while driving, or using the full qwerty keyboard to write up an e-mail while driving.

I support every little bit of it. What we lose is very little compared to the safety we gain.

this type of discussion always brings me to my radical traffic enforcement idea:

everyone gets a nerf gun that has 3 sticky darts that they can use to "shoot" the car of an offender. if a cop sees a car with with 3 sticky darts on it, the car/driver gets an automatic "******* driver" ticket.

I thought this up in 1997...pls update with your imagination to something more electronically up-to-date to this...hehe...

XD That idea is awesome. Only problem with this idea is if you see someone on the highway that is doing something bad. The dart will never stick. but the idea to tag someone is a good idea.

As for the no fiddling with objects at red lights. I'm guilty of this...but only to unplug my ipod then re-plug it in to my adapter as it has issues sometimes. After that, everything is steering wheel controls.

Finally doing something about the stupid drivers.

Speaking of stupid drivers, while somewhat off topic, anyone catch Canadas worst driver 4? *shudders at how bad those people are*

Sure. We should ban those things too.

You realize that that has nothing to do with the dangers of using cell phones while driving, right? The cell phone ban is a step in the right direction.

Actually, what I'd really prefer is this: if the cops can determine that you were using your cell phone at the time of an accident it's an automatic careless/reckless driving charge. If someone is killed, it's a vehicular manslaughter charge.

These are toys we're driving around, people. They can, and do, kill every day.

I'm sorry but this is the funniest post in this thread. :chuckle Talk about taking it out of context.

The way I look at it is that I'm tired of driving the speed limit and coming up on someone talking on the cell phone while doing 30 km/hr under the limit. How about the guy/girl who doesn't see you because they're distracted while making a call. My favorite is the person who signals left but goes right because....yes that's right they're on the phone.

I'm for this ban. I believe if people want to talk on the phone they should get a bluetooth headset. I've seen some ridiculous drivers lately with both ear buds in their ears listening to an ipod while they drive. That's just reckless!

But they really should put a ban on make-up too. :)

For those who are looking for a very good and economical BT headset, get the Sony one that comes with Socom Confrontation (PS3). Very clear voice quality and comes with a charging stand. Sell the bundled game for $10 and you've got an awesome bluetooth headset for $40-50.

What's to stop them from calling in to base after they've finished one delivery but before starting another? So it takes slightly longer to get your deliveries done, but there's no reason they can't run things this way.

I'm sure there are also hands-free kits for things like CB radios.

Are you serious? So you expect an on-duty police officer to pull over and stop to look up a plate while that car continues to drive away?

I'm pretty sure on-duty police officers are exempt from this just like they are exempt (to a certain degree) speed limits and parking restrictions.

Looks like they won't be giving any tickets out until February. It will be interesting to see how many warnings are given out until then.

I also heard that they can't give you a ticket for manually changing a song on an ipod or other mp3 device as long as it's not occupying your hand. So by just pressing next or whatever "should" not acquire you a ticket. :)

I was thinking... are they gonna ban cigarettes in the car then?

unless you're being facetious, Ontario already has banned smoking in cars with kids (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20080616/smoking_ban_080616/20080616?hub=Canada)

TORONTO — Ontario's doctors are congratulating the provincial government for banning adults from smoking in cars with kids.

Ken Arnold of the Ontario Medical Association says he's been calling for the ban since 2004.

A government-backed bill to ban the practice passed in the legislature today with support from all parties.

But Opposition leader Bob Runciman says the law will only make a police officer's job more onerous.

Drivers and passengers in Ontario who break the law could be fined up to 250 dollars for each offence.

Nova Scotia and British Columbia have already outlawed the practice.

Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick are also considering a similar ban.

An Ontario Provincial Police spokesman has said the ban won't be difficult to enforce, as officers already inspect for seatbelt and child car seat offences.

No, I mean... phone is distracting because one of your hand is occupied with it right? Because the conversation itself isn't too distracting... since using bluetooth is still legal.

Smoking... you gotta light it... smoke it... and even gotta reach out the window to get rid of the ash...

So, from safety point of view, isn't it the same danger as using a cell phone?
(Probably worse... cause it's lit...)

funny you mention this because last Monday, when the police started cracking down on the "cell phone ban", CityOnline had Sgt. Woodford from the OPP and another officer from the Toronto Police on and they clarified that the law was for electronics (ipods, GPS, phones) and that other things such as putting on makeup, holding a cup of coffee, smoking, eating while driving - while not kosher - wouldn't get you a ticket.

So, one caller called in and lamented that:

"ok, so rather than holding only a cell phone in my hand while driving, i can now talk on the phone with my new bluetooth headset and drink a cup of coffee with the hand that would've otherwise held the cell phone. So now i'm doing 2 distractive things while driving rather than one."

so, i'm sure you can hold a cup of coffee in one hand and ash the cigarette while talking on the phone - as long as it's talking while on a handsfree device. :loco

well really smoking while driving is not as big a deal as driving with a cellphone. Itsn ot like you are talking to it, not like you are getting distracted by a cigarette. lighting it is probably the biggest issue and if you have a car cigarette lighter (greatest thing about my car lol) then its not a big issue. Plus alot of people smoke in their car and I know some of you guys smoke and smoke in your cars. If they get that law going really I will be pissed

I wonder if i'll be ticketed.. if I have cig in one hand... my driving hand.. and coffee in the other... lollll while on bluetooth.

but yeah... this law is so shady... probably aimed to get ppl to spend $$$ to revive the bluetooth carriers hahaha.
