Hi

I have a 2005 GX mazda3 sedan, within the past 2 months are so, I have noticed that the parking brake has begun to stick. I can still drive with it stuck as it is barely noticeable. ( I have a manual transmission and notice on hills I still roll back) but the car is perceptibly more sluggish. It does unstick itself usually.

I took it into the dealership when it first began to stick as that day I could not unstick it and the car wouldnt budge (I called CAA first, they were able to unstick it by lubing up the chain). When I took the car in they said that my rear rotors needed to be replaced and all 4 brake pads as well but my parking brake was fine. They said that it might have been the rotors that were causing the parking brake to stick. So I had all that done but the parking brake still sticks.

I guess I would like to know if any of you have had the same problem and if you would recommend that I lube the parking brake chain myself and if so how to accomplish this?

The parking brake actually has a cable, not a chain.

You really can't lubricate it youself very easily... at least not properly. Who did you have look at your car when the rear pads and rotors were replaced? Did they do anything at all to parking brake? I can't see how that worn rotors or pads would cause the parking brake to stick... it's usually that water has gotten into the cable and caused rust that is making the cable stick. The cable should probably be replaced, but at the very least needs to have grease worked into it, which involves disconnecting the cable from the rear brakes.

Your car is only three years old. Are you out of warranty?

thanks for the reply,

I will probably take it in again to see what can be done. Yeah my car is out of warranty, didnt buy any extended coverage. It probably doesn't help matters that I took it to the infamous Markham mazda when I had the car looked at last. I think all they did was do a quick look at the brake and since CAA had unseized it before I went in, they must have not noticed anything out of the ordinary. Any suggestions on where I should go to take it in to have it looked at?

The samething happened to me, i have a 2005 GS Sedan .
i just took it to the shop (not the dealer) and they replaced the parking brake ,which was al rusted out .
The guy that delivered the part said that was common on mazdas.
hope this helps

Mine is having the same issue, I just got off the phone with my mechanic and there is a new modified parking brake cable assembly available from Mazda to alleviate the rusting issue. Cost is around $130.00
