Just wondering if anyone out there has one of these and what your opinion on it is.

I got rid of my pocket pc and am asking the wife for a 16gb iPod Touch for X-Mas. Just wanted to see what people thought.

Thanks.

I have the iPhone which is very similar to the iTouch and I love it :) I bought mine in the US and had it unlocked almost a year ago, so I don't have all the features that the iTouch would now have but they are awesome!

If you have a mobile plan with a SIM card, I would suggest just buying the iPhone in the US and paying like $50.00 to have it unlocked. That way you get a phone too!

I never really understood the whole unlocking thing. I have a cell phone with Bell now. Do I just take out the SIM card from that phone or something to use in the iphone from the states?

I don't believe that Bell uses SIM cards. If it does, then yes, you would just put the SIM card from your current phone into the unlocked iPhone - It's that simple :)

you are correct. Bell does not use sim cards, as they are a CDMA network. Same goes for Telus. Rogers & Fido are GSM and use sim cards.

I was think of getting an iphone from the US too. Seems like a good idea since you're buying an iTouch, might as well get the extra cellular features.

Depending on how you will use the device it may not always be a good idea to upgrade to the iPhone. Battery life would be my main concern. If you will use the device to watch a lot of video (pod casts), browse the net, use apps, play games, you may not have enough battery power to answer that incoming call at the end of the day (I'm not saying that the battery only lasts one day but you get my point).
If you want an all-in-one device then it's great. You just have to watch your use.

I've got the iPod touch and rely on it heavily during my commute to and from work. I watch a lot of pod casts since I don't watch much TV when at home. I’d be so bored without it.

The iPhone has a feature called "Airplane" mode, which essentially shuts down all the WiFi and phone abilities - making it a essentially an iTouch. I have no issues with my phone's battery life - and the best part of the iPhone, is that you can charge it in any normal iPod charger (I just plug my phone into my radio at work to charge it if I'm low).

Not true ;) I tried charging my iPhone with my friends iPod charger which connects to the bar via firewire and no luck. The iphone says it isnt compatible with that accessory

From previous experience, Rogers in the Quinte area is crap..A couple of my friends had Rogers and their phone said "no service" more often than it would work..That was from Grafton to Belleville. I don't know if they have since put more towers or repeaters up, might wanna see if anyone you know currently has Rogers.

I will be looking for an iPod touch on boxing day when I go to get a TV :D..

If you do end-up getting the iPod touch, just make sure you get the new version (built-in speakers, slightly new shape, dedicated volume controls, etc.). The new version should be the only one available at any authorized supplier but just in case....

Hmm - well it charges off the USB 2.0 one fine (and in the car etc). Maybe it just isn't compatible to transfer data, but will still charge.

I found this online which might be of assistance. It might be a review of the older models though.

my cousin told me the newer generatiosn are going to have a built in camera...

can anyone confirm this???

By "newer generations" are you referring to future versions not released yet? I guess that's anyone's guess at this point. The iPod Touch v2 (which is what I mentioned earlier with the built-in speakers, etc.) was only released about a month ago and it does not have a camera.

I had a touch for almost a year now. Amazing unit. Use it everyday. No regrets.
Built-in speakers of the new generation would be sweet, but first gen has ability to be jailbroken, so it's a trade-off.

Nobody knows for sure about the built-in camera, but rumors are that it probably won't. And since a new gen just got released, even if it did, you'd have to wait a while.

The iPhone has a camera (no flash - crappy interior pics) and has built in speakers. They aren't the best quality...but do fine for showing YouTube clips and whatnot to friends.

I snagged my Ipod Touch for 50 bucks, Amazing little device. Ive jailbroken it to get all sorts of fun apps, also another app allows you to download apple store apps free. Ive put on Spore,Crash Bandicoot racing, a piano program, drums, NES emulator, ibeer and more.. the way it was made is simply amazing, every little detail was thought of.. its so cool. I have the 1st gen... the second gen has the built in speakers like the iphone and a external volume control (lucky bastards) and looks more curved on the back .. GET IT

Well I have to say for $50 you got a screamin deal!

I have moved from simply hinting to outright asking and my hints hit like a bat so there should be no mistaking. :chuckle

I am really excited about getting one and with the trips I have to take with no laptop at least I can access e-mail etc.

I've had my touch for abouy 6 months now and its a nice toy. It's been pwnaged and have a few extra games and apps on it. I keep looking at the iphones but the data plans sux. i could hack it and restrict the 3G and edge...
AFAIK the iphone 3G can be jail broke but not unlocked ie: add your own apps but not use with different carriers. TurboSims have beem somewhat successful..Previous models are unlockable.

have a ipod touch and can't do without it. it's a great complimentary product with my blackberry. i enjoy most of the benefits of the iphone (less phone/cam), and i still get to use my bb for all my other wireless needs.

For this issue it depends what firewire plug u plugged it into. if its a mini firewire (4 pin) it does not output power. dont matter what it is, it will not power it. to get power from a firewire u need the big one (6 pin). the 4 pin is only for data transfer. and that would explain y the usb charged it since it provides power to the unit ur plugging in.

I have a friend who has a 3G he got from the US for 250 and he uses it on rogers right now.. I think already a method has been made to jailbreak and unlock those.. just in canada it makes no sense because here they make you activate the phones with a plan.. instead of buying it with no plan at all. not sure about the US.. but his had some weird tape thing on the back of the phone .. somthing to do with the sim card.

I've had mine for about a year now and i love it. its great for my commutes on the train or just whenever ur waiting for anything really. I suggest you get a case with it and a film protector. don't worry they're not expensive, i got mine off ebay for 5 bucks and 1 dollar respectively. otherwise enjoy listening to music, watching movies and playing pretty addicting games!

Gratz!
I've had an iPhone for a few months now and I absolutely love it. I think it's the best all-in-one handheld device ever. It's a total game-changer.
