....improve performance?

Most likely, and that's why I'm looking into one. I've found one from cosworth that seems to be made for the MZR (our engine) and actually has a resonable price tag.

My concern....

....would I need to retune the ECU, meaning I would have to get a standalone?

or

....would I "hurt" the motor somehow with the extra airflow? (lean ratios and such).

I understand you'd need the custom intake plenum, but could you get away with it?

It all depends on how you define performance. I would expect an upgraded or optimized tb to improve air flow.

I looked at the link, but there's no info on that particular part. Is it for a cable tb or fly by wire? If it's for cable I don't know if it will work with our Canadian version of the mz3. I think on m3f there is an Australian guy who upgraded his tb, but the Australian version of the mz3 has a cable tb.

I'm interested. :pop

There is a guy who optimizes stock TBs... also explains how to do it yourself: http://cordovamotorsports.com/

From the looks of it the motor looks transferable from the stock throttlebody. I'd have to call. It also says you'd need the special intake plenum. I'm not sure if these would requite a lot of modification or not. I'm just not wanting to touch the ECU because we can't, we'd need a Piggyback or Standalone.

Hmmm.... I've done this on my dirt bike's carb. It seems like an easy enough modifiction but its just smoothing out the throttle, not really increasing flow. The intake is apparently 60mm, but why not upgrade to a 62mm or 64?

I was thinking of getting a spoon throttle body for my car as well. I asked a few old honda guys, and they said, if i were to go for a bigger TB, you'll also need to upgrade to a bigger intake manifold since you're sucking more air in. If you have your stock intake manifold, and have a big TB, the air you're sucking in, will still get stuck or trapped in there because the manifold is not big enough.

Edit* or, they said, get a shorter intake manifold, so the air will go in faster and won't get trapped inside.

Very cool. I'm really curious about this.

I think I've read some posts about peeps boring out the tb, but I don't know if they got as big as 64mm. I'll take a look to see if I can find those posts.

Dyno with an optimized TB. Doesn't seem to be worth it to me without a standalone to tune with.

Well an optomized throttle body wouldn't be much gain, and its a mod I could do myself. My concern is I already have a 60mm throttle body since I have a 2004. So "optimization" alone won't do much if anything at all.

They say they bore out the throttle body but they just enlarge the intake and exhuast portion of the throttle body. If they adjusted the size of the bore they would have to increase the size of the plate.

IMHO, not enough gain to warrant the expense.

Agreed. In addition, look at the points made in the link I posted. The ECU seems to change how much it opens the TB and how much fuel and air is allowed to enter.
