Hello,
Do you guys know why does the AC switches on when I turn the air flow control to Floor (not Floor/Defrost, just Floor)?
I know it is normal for AC to switch on when you select Defrost option, but why when I select Floor only.
Thanks,
2009 Mazda 3 Sport GX

If you read your owners manual you would know that the A/C kicks in at any position from 12 o'clock and to the right on the selector.....it's annoying but normal.

Yes, I read that, but the question is still why is that so?
For defrost it makes sense, but it doesn't make any sense for AC to kick in when you select Floor option only.
I know this is not a malfunction, but I am interested to know why is it like this.

Well I agree whole heartedly, and who knows why? Just one of those retarded things they sometimes do, I guess.

I may be reading this wrong...but mine only clicks in when it's on defrost...but doesn't light up...but also kicks in on floor and any to the left of floor...but for that one, the temp control has to be fully on cold air. If I have it even 1 click higher than the coldest, it doesn't kick in the AC...

Do you have auto climate control or just standard? With the standard system the A/C will come on from the 'floor only' position~12 o'clock position and any selection to the right of that; 1,2,3 and 4 o'clock positions(without the A/C light coming on, ever)~ ....Also, any position to the left of 12 o'clock will not start the A/C ~ no matter what your temp setting is on~....(it's explained quite well in the Owner's manual).

Standard...I have the GT without the lux package.

I haven't noticed it with floor, but I'm aware that the A/C kicks in with all the rest beside floor (1, 2, 3 and 4 o'clock positions) and the A/C light dosn't come on...I just checked my book and you are right on the floor...so good to know when I didn't before...

So they might have changed it with the newer Mazda models...but if you take the temp control's full left as the 0 position and goes up from that, if the temp position is > 0 and anything to the left of floor, then the AC is not on...or at least no light on. but if the temp position = 0 then A/C kicks in at first, but you can turn it off unlike with the defrost ones. With this one, the light comes on.
And it's not just my car (08.5 GT) but my mom's car as well (08 GT).
Exact quote from the book states...
"Note
- The air conditioner may not function when the outside temperature approaches 0 degrees C (32 degrees F)
- (U.S.A., Canada) When the mode is set to (shows picture of full head vents or head and floor vents) with the fan control dial in a position other than 0 and the temperature control dial in the maximum cold position, the air intake selector switches to the recirculated air mode and the A/C turns on automatically. If A/C is not desired, press the A/C switch to turn it off."
So at least in the 08 and higher models, from the 8 o-clock position to 11 o-clock position of the mode selector, if you have the fan on anything but 0 and the temp control at full cold, A/C gets turned on automatically.
But, also when checking the book, I noticed that it is pushing some air through the top vents near the windows so while it's not as strong as the rest of the full defrost, that little bit combined with AC might help with the windows a bit. Which is probably why they do A/C for that. Which sucks as I normally run the controls on just floor...

Well I guess they changed it at some point, cause 1. my manual does not state that and 2. I've tried it on my car and it does not turn the a/c on....Good to know though, for people with newer models!

Yeah...I'd be happier if it didn't...but it's not hard to just press the A/C button again to turn it off.
Not sure what year they started that though.
