Neither did I. Where did you bury that out from Chris or was it a discontinued / US only part that Joe was not aware of? :chuckle I know they have door illumination but it does not sync with your dimmer lights as its a switch.

Would be nice to find out which wires to tap into for this footwell lighting (cuz right now, I run wires all the way from the maplights).

Some ppl tap into the 12v cigarette lighter light. That's how im gonna wire up my footwell LED's.

But tapping them into the cig lighter would force you to install a switch somewhere in the loop.
For the maplights, it'll signal the footwells to come on whenever the doors are open.

There is no need to go all the way to the roof to connect to the Map Lights.
The Map Lights (and Dome Light) are fed from the PJB. +12V via the room fuse on J-05, pin S, Orange wire with Blue stripe. Ground via the microcomputer (controls the dimming of the lights, also probably prevents them from being on too long if a door is left open and draining the battery) on J-05, pin U, Black wire with Blue stripe. Note that the map light *switches* have their own separate ground, not controlled by the microcomputer.
I wouldn't hang too great a load off of the Map Lights, as the wiring diagram does not show the ground being switched by a relay... it goes right to the microcomputer. I would suggest using a relay for any significant load.

I guess yeah. Thats what i was planning to do. But then in order for the lights to turn on you'll need to have the map lights on which might get annoying. That is unless you don't like driving with the footwell lights on.

Thanks for this, Crow. At the moment, I've got a fair bit tapped off the maplights though: LED maplights, LED footwell strips (4), outside side marker, vent LEDs, and door sills. No idea what the total amperage draw is ...
Anyways, sorry for being off-topic. gl to the OP with the OEM footwell install !! They are going to look great!

If i remember correctly when i hooked up my mirrors with the entry lighting i hooked it up right by the drivers seat where the hump seperates the front footwell from under the seat. when you lift up the carpet you will find a white protective box guiding wires through and i think there is the connection for the entry lighting. I will have to double check though.

Here's a few pics of the bulb. Looks like it can be replaced if it burns out. Its been suggested that I should try replacing it with a LED bulb.
From what I gather on the instructions, the wiring taps in to an existing wire on the passenger junction box.
Thanks to Noisy Crow for info regarding which wires are the dome /map lights.

The wires from the PJB *do* run to the back of the car, up the C-pillar and back forward across the roof with drops for the dome light and then for the map lights (and, I assume the lighted sunvisors... they aren't in the 2008 wiring manual). So for sill-lights and rear-footwell lights you may have found a more convenient place to connect....

Kind of looks like a #74 or something close to it. I had a similar bulb in my old Grand Am (HVAC lighting). The thing was TINY!! Not sure how much light it will give off.

it looks more like a 2721 bulb to me... I installed a different kit for my protege (and wrote the how-to for it, which you can find on that m3f thread) and it totally changes the feel of the interior... I can also turn off the dome light and still be able to see getting in and out... good for either out in the sticks to keep bugs from flying inside the car, or when I go to a bad area so punks can't see what I have inside
anyway, I just ordered this one from jdmgoodie also for my 3 and I will write a how-to for the 3 also as soon as I get it and start putting it in
I thought about picking this up at DWM too but it's expensive... even thought about getting it directly from japan myself, and that to is even more expensive
60 bucks shipped is still expensive for some plastic housings and wires, but it's OEM so I know it's good quality and will fit/work right

I agree that OEM is the way to go.
I hope to get it installed this week (weather pending...too cold) and have pics up soon too. I was sent a link on how to install on a P5 but the wiring is totally different.

Did the Japense instructions come with a wiring diagram? If so, and you if you would, like I can try to cross-reference it to the wiring manual for you.....

yearoftherat, I wouldn't mind a copy of the instructions when you get them.
I've got the 2007 wiring manual as well .
My package shipped yesterday.

So when are these lights lit up? Do they come on with the rest of the interior lights (when you have parking lights on) or only when the doors are open. I think it would really cool if they were on all the time when the rest of the interior lights are on.
yearoftherat
01-14-2009, 07:19 PM
I checked the online mazda3 service manual and the diagram for the PJB is the same as shown in the instructions.
Like Noisy Crow stated:
J-05 U is for the interior light control - blk w/blue strip wire
J-05 S is the interior light power supply - orange w/ blue strip wire
Therefore the wiring for the kit would then wiretaps these wires.
There is a red w/silver that has a built in fuse which is the power wire. This will tap the orange w/blue wire
There is a black w/silver which is the ground wire. This will tap blk w/ blue wire.

I got mine in a couple of days ago... I'm going to mess with it when it warms up and perhaps after I get an ipod adapter since it involves ripping half the dash apart, I might as well do it all at once

Okay, I'll answer the question about when it illuminates if you tie into the orange/blue and black/blue wires. Just like your dome light/map lights, they will turn on when the car is unlocked or open a door. They fade to black when the key is rolled to the ON position or when the timer for when you close a door happens.
Essentially they mirror the interior lights.
Picture tutorial being made up.

Thats what I thought they would do since Noisy_crow told us which wire to hook up to.
I had lots of fun reading the jap instructions since they were written up for a RH drive car.
You beat me to writing up the tutorial...

Zombie bump! Just wanted to thank Noisy Crow for posting this info, as I'd been asking this question in my head the past few days and then remembered this thread - and figured that there was probably an OEM way to hook up footwell lights without going up to the dimming map/dome lights.
Stay tuned for more Aitch LED goodness based on this info :)
