View Full Version : Car warranty scam (telemarketing)?

Xerox

Got a call on my cell (actually a voice message since I didn't answer it) - an automated message saying that my car warranty is about to expire and that I shouldn't "risk driving without warranty" and that this was my last chance to reactivate it.

Damn scammers need to get a life

I even got the call yesterday on my cell.

I can tell you this:

It is not Mazda Canada nor is it their Warranty they are trying to sell.

It is a Marketing Company in the States and I have no idea where they obtained their information.

Again.. Not Mazda... just hang up on them.

909 - cali #

I got a call from the same number: 909.502.9102 (Corona, California)

This is a scam to get you to provide information about your bank account, or to convince you to pay them something directly (for which you would get nothing in return).

Quite a business if you think about it.. you get one person to agree to a $2k extended warranty in 8 hours of calling, you're making $250 an hour!

My co-worker just got something similar earlier this week. They told him his insurance is going to expire soon on his new car lol. My friend asked him which car they were referring to (he bought 2 new cars recently) and the guy on the other line said, "Well which car do you have?"

I don't think so since people who don't even own cars have also been getting these calls. They are probably just dialing number after number looking for a hit.

Mind you it wouildn't be the first or the last time that a company's supposedly confidential client list ends up in the hands of unscrupulous 3rd party members...

This might have something to do with the fact the Canadian government (in it's infinite wisdom) decided to make the No-Call list with MILLIONS OF PEOPLE'S PHONE NUMBERS available for download on the web for a 50$ fee. The idea is for honest tele-marketing companies to be able to access the list so they know who NOT to call.

Ok.

Is it just me?

Or does anyone else see the @#$&!!#$@ problem with that?

THEY ARE MAKING THE LIST AVAILABLE TO ANYONE. ANY-FREAKING-ONE!!

So of course, scammers and unscrupulous tele-marketers are able to download this list for the measly sum of 50$. Sure, there are fines for improper use of the list but these people can operate from ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD!! How is the Canadian government going to pursue a bunch of criminals operating outside the country??? So that's why you are getting calls from all over the US and other weird area codes!!

WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT SO STUPID???? WHY OH WHY!!!

So basically any one of you that put yourselves on the No-Call list at any point since the inception of this is SCREWED. Your number has been made available to any scammer in the world.

If parliament were to burn down today I would be happy, that's how pissed off I am about this!! INCOMPETENT FOOLS!!! :flaming

Politicians and bureaucrats. Are they lower on the totem pole than lawyers, used car salesman and slime? My answer is yes.

Xerox
01-23-2009, 11:41 AM
Yes. They have gotten some criticism because of that (DNCL for $50).

I thought about that but I never registered my number on it. Unless someone else did it for me.....

Go_Habs_Go
01-23-2009, 11:47 AM
I'm not saying that this is the only way they could have gotten people's numbers but it definitely presents a major possibility for this current situation and a major concern for the future.

Also it's not that hard to get on the No Call list, I was called at home last week for some product (credit card or who knows what). It was an automated message and I had the option of pressing '2' to not be called again. I didn't do it, I just hung up but I would bet that if you do, you are not only put on that particular company's No Call list but probably also the government's Master List.

And then that list ends up on the Web!! PURE GENIUS.

That list should only be made available to legitimate Canadian registered companies. The companies should have to make a formal request for that list and then be verified by said wonderful government to make sure they are a legitimate operation. Otherwise DO NOT SHARE THE LIST WITH THEM!! How hard can it be to implement this? Good Grief!!

What are they going to post next? Our SIN numbers so tax preparers will have easier access to them?!!

01-25-2009, 07:09 PM
I was too lazy to sign up on the do not call, and I have never gotten one of these warranty calls.

Only people that call me is the stupid 3rd party company that keeps calling me "on behalf of scotiabank" to try and sell me life insurance. I don't understand why they don't understand when I tell them that my dad already has life insurance on me and that they can screw off and never call me again.

Totally!! I read an article the other day about this. Apparently the government is "concerned and looking into what they can do about it."

Oh, excuse me Mr Big and Poweful and All-Knowing government, but here is a suggestion:

TAKE...THE...#%@#%$#%#$%^...LIST...OFF...THE...INT ERNET...YOU STUPID...SLACKJAWED...GARGANTUAN...MORONS!!!

Sorry but I just can believe how stupid and careless our government was about this. Does this not just fit the stereotype about bureaucrats running things without being in touch with reality? If this happened at a private company people would lose their jobs instantly.

The problem with the DNC list is that it "has" to be available to all companies that make outbound calls, because the fines incurred for any company caught calling out and the number is on the list is pretty severe (upwards of 25,000 per complaint since the last time I checked).

How they ensure it doesn't get into the wrong hands is anybodys guess, which is what worries me... I even said to myself to wait at least 6 to 12 months before registering... No I really regret it lol

Anyone can buy this list, and someone outside of the country can buy it and start calling everyone about their scams. People can only be charged and prosecuted if they are within Canada, so that leaves thieves from the USA and other countries open to scamming our citizens. The DNCL will only make legitamite Canadian businesses stop calling you, and in turn will get more and more scammers like this calling you.

Perhaps there should be a government funded site like:

I don't know if it will make a difference at this point since the list that was made available on the government website has probably already circulated around quite a bit. I wouldn't be surprised to see it pop up on a P2P file sharing bittorrent site. Pirate Bay, now hosting Canadian No Call lists!

The government should have really limited access to the List and made sure only legitmate companies registered in Canada could get a copy.

I got a call from the number (310) 599-9117 and that"s cali based. Anyways it was on a Wed night around 9pm when I was suffering from a nice case of food poisoning. I run from the bathroom and snag my phone, as there is a very limited amount of people with my number. I get this pre recorded voice as stated by others, and I was like WTF. I figured perhaps something is messed up on my car so I stayed on the line just encase (I only stayed on the line since I knew mazda has my number so who else could it be?). The lady picks up and tells me my car's warranty was about to expire and stuff. I ask her right away," what car?" She then went on to tell me it was the last one I bought, so again I say, "exactly what car, make, model and colour?" She then said it was whatever one it was I bought last. Clearly at this point it was bullshit, and I was infuriated that I had not only ran to my phone but it was a telemarketer calling me at 9pm at night when I was sick as a dog. Pretty much told her to suck a big one and to get a job where she would not be ripping off elderly people ( I could see my grandmother falling for exactly this). I honestly don't understand how people can take these jobs, knowing they are screwing over people or annoying people every day.

they got a 416# now??? it's all telemarketing... When I got the call I tried to talk to them see what they know about me. they don't even know what car I drive. so they just randomly call numbers and hopefully make a sale. and yes they are annoying to talk to!

They likely aren't Toronto based, but rather calling Toronto-specific numbers from a VOIP service. 416-000-xxxx is the most common one, and i've been called at least 6-7 times now.

it's very easy to get your number from thin air..just start at 416 (or 647, or 905..)-000-0000 and keep calling in sequence. Chances are good you'll get more "real" numbers than you will inactive numbers.

i peronsally just ignore these numbers; i wish there was some kind of "honeypot" i could redirect them to where the phone just rings and rings and rings and rings. if everyone getting these calls could do that, sooner or later the expense of calling (timewise and moneywise) would make it not worth the effort.
