Yep, Had 2 R40 Thinkpads die on me in the past year. They glitch up and freeze and then eventually dont start up at all. I'm guessing caps on the motherboard screw up.

Anyhow, Looking for a replacement. NO not a MDG.

I'm stuck deciding beetween a Toshiba Satelite (newest model) or AlienWare. (expensive)

Opinions would be nice =)

I've had my T42p for more than three years, and aside from me spilling a glass of Cola on it once, I've never had any problems.

I used to have a Toshiba Satellite; the features list is pretty impressive, but it never felt as rugged as the Thinkpad. The Alienware machines are targetted more at the enthusiast and gamer; if you're not a serious gamer, I'd go with the Toshiba.

I bought a Toshiba in November of 07 http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?section=1&group=223&product=7670 I have not had any technical problems with it but some things im not impressed with..

The battery only holds a charge for roughly an hour. My wireless randomly drops and reconnects after 30-60secs, the mouse buttons have an extremely loud click to them.

Other than these minor issues I am happy with it though. My g/f bought a 13" toshiba the same time and does not have any of these issues (hers has an intel chip however)

Im guessing my power issue is because of the AMD chip, and usually having it on for 10hours or more everyday :)

So far, nothing to fix though which is all I care about.

For durability, the glossy black is beautiful to look at...when its clean, otherwise all you see is finger prints, and a minor scratch stand out tremendously. Our dog manage to snap a key off my g/f laptop last night, but the way it was built it just snaps back on luckily.

Alienware = $$$, I would love to get one though.

Good luck finding what you need..whats your price range? I got mine for $599 marked down from $999.

Satalite wouldn't be bad - most of the clients I support have been moved towards Toshiba machines, and I haven't had any major issues with them in years.

With the incoming mobile quad core processor laptops, i'd say hold off on buying a brand new laptop for about a year, when this new technology has matured and is just starting to get into the peak of it's product development lifecycle.

Coincidentally, i'm selling an IBM (not Lenovo) T40 laptop that I had just gotten from a corporate client. He barely used it, but i've replaced the keyboard and palmrest so it's looking pretty new :)
