Hi everyone,
For the last 4 years I have done RX-7/RX-8 day at Mosport on the Mother's day race weekend. It was a free day for all RX owners with lapping behind a pace car at lunch time. This year I am inviting all the Mazda clubs, just want to know how many people would come out for this type of event. There will be an area for parking/Show & Shine and watching the races (all free of course) then when the racing stops for lunch we will go out on the track for lapping behind a pace car. No special equipment is needed, just to go out and have fun. I also thought of adding a fee of like $20.00 for the track and donating the money to Sick Kids Hospital, I think it would look good on the clubs to do that. We will be racing our RX7 that weekend as well. You can post here or email me directly at alan@scarboromazda.ca if your interested.

Even though I don't drive an RX-8, I'm interested

Can I do the lap behind the pace car too?!

I was there last year and Al was a great host. I got to be 3rd in-line for the parade lap(s) and got the stretch the car's legs out before the tracking season began...I encourage true enthusiasts to come out and make a good showing.

I'm hoping something like this will be put together for the Koni/Grand Am event as well!

I'm definately interested what kind of speeds and how long of a session would we get on the track. Any time on a racetrack is great though especially when it's pretty much free.

01Racing
02-10-2009, 03:38 PM
The speed up the back straight will get to about 140kmh on some laps. A lot depends on how many cars show up this year. The session will be either 15 minutes or 1/2 hour depending on if we have to split it into 2 groups.

That sounds great, I'll have to make sure that I'm clear that weekend it's track and field season and I'm still not sure when OFSSA is. As long as It's not a conflict with work I'll be there with bells on. Do you guys usually go up there individually or do you convoy it all up? oh and btw If i put a mazda logo and a tm3 decal on my motorcycle can I take that on the track instead? lol I promise to wear full leathers!:chuckle

I'm glad you guys raised so much for Sick Kids and thanks to Scarboro Mazda and Al Balinsky for putting this together...but I'd have to re-consider returning for next yr...

1. My group got 4 laps...I registered @ 8.30am, waited til 12:40 in the windy cold...for 4 laps. (we got over 12 laps last yr...my car hit 160 on the back straight)

2. Al said we should hit a bout 140 on the back straight...sorry, I drove faster going to Mosport...we might've touched 120...was that a regular Mazda 6 leading?!

3. Guess what? because of the slow pace, all the guys behind me started to ease up to get more room for themselves...this likely lead to the lead car catching up to the back cars quite quickly...great!

4. Did I mention we only got 4 laps?! At least Sick Kids will benefit from my $20 donation...

1) There were more car's this year so we decided to break up into the two groups. Otherwise Al would have been coming up on the back of the pack extremely quickly.

2) Hrmm... I guess the speed in part varied by where you were in the group. I talked to a few members who were able to get up to about 150~160kmp on the back straight. And no... that wasn't a regular Mazda 6. That was a Mazdaspeed 6 with a done up suspension that Al was driving. He could have smoked us all :)

3) Yes... we noticed that in both groups. Starting to toy with the idea that maybe we break the groups by those with some track experience that those without. That way we won't run into the gap issue.

4) Everyone wants more. But again. This was a charity event.. no money was made there. In fact for a number of the RX8 guys, we are out a fair chunk of cash as we fit the bill for the BBQ's, food and what not. But yes.. your $20 dollars is going to an excellent cause. Remember it's not very often that you have a chance to get on Mosport (unless you feel like paying $375 and don't mind having to contend with other cars on the track who would think nothing of hitting your car at highspeed).

In any case, sorry to hear you were disappointed by the event.

I'm not disappointed per se, but more that I expected more since last year was way more fun, and no donation was even asked. Was Al leading the second group? It seemed like a silver Mazda 6 from where I was...

And those guys who might've hit 160, were prolly those guys who left a gap so they can do full blast, which essentially held everyone up...great for those guys...bad for everyone else...I was the 4th guy in the second group...and the lead car did not hit 140...(it's not about the speed either, but the fun factor is way down, along with speeds).

It's not about wanting more...just that Al had set the bar very high last year for enjoyment...

I didn't have any of the RX8's club free food for their own club...I would've preferred to see a much smaller event focused around a track experience rather than to raise funds...seriously, does everything have to be about fund raising for charity so someone can make some news about it?

Seriously, it was way more fun last year...

And yes, I do regularly pay full track fees to hit tracks around southern Ontario, so $20 or not, cost isn't an issue...hope you guys will address some of these issue for next year instead.

EDIT: I think separating the group into experienced vs. inexperienced is the way to go. What you drive has nothing to do with your capabilities...

Feed back is great...except a "fast" driver in MS3 I guess...

I am not going to comment but some of his statements are really unfounded. Can't he have fun in the turns instead of keep asking for top speed?

Oh wait...he cant...:P

I laugh at your statement...seems like typical "I drive a rotary and is god's gift to mankind" BS...Al said we'd hit 140 in the back, and I never think Al is one to lie...

BTW...have you laid down any hot laps at Mosport yourself before?

Well, I think some it comes from the group he was in, his car was over matched for that group. We had all RX-8s so driving was great.

I appreciate this comment but that's not the point. I think by turning the event into a fund-raiser took away the pure joy driving your car on Mosport...last year, we ran some real laps, this year, we cruised around for 4 times around Mosport...

Most ppl who showed up last yr were keen drivers...seemed like we have a lot more cruisers this yr...oh well...glad some ppl are more interested in driving their Mazda's slowly...just pls don't do it in FRONT of me...

The RX8 club turned a Mazda/ABR/Scarboro Mazda event into an RX8 event...

...you guys went out first and did more laps in your own RX8 group
...the rest of the Mazdas, were grouped together regardless
...this is was a Mazda event done by ABR/Scarboro Mazda/BEMC, how did it turn into a fund-raiser where the RX8 club got all the glory and the rest of us who had fun last year when it was NOT a fund-raiser, got only 4 laps out of it

I'm all for doing charity...but you guys turned an otherwise fun and non-exclusive event into an RX8 fund-raiser where the rest of us just tagged along and got second rate treatment...I'm glad you guys are proud of yourselves...

Easy boys, lets all settle down....

Yes a little more speed would have made it a little more fun, but I'm not sure that speed was the objective for the organizers...

Yes, the "groupings" maybe should have been a little different if the goal was speed, I think that the goal was to show off the cars, on the track. A pack of 25 RX8's does look pretty cool to the casual fans who were watching from trackside.

Yes, The second group of cars could have been organized a little better. Some seemed like they were out for a Sunday drive in the country, probably not the right place for it. I'm not sure you can blame the organizers for that. Putting a price on something generally keeps the bottom feeders out, in this case it was "free" so it's not surprising that everyone showed up for a freebie.

Yes $20 is a surprise if you weren't expecting it, but you probably spent more in gas to get there....

That's my $0.02....

These are my 2 responses to the RX8 club and I now feel I have officially wasted enough time on this...helping ppl with feedback to make it more enjoyable for everyone next year is not a priority for them.

I didn't join to start a pissing match, but I want to put this to rest.

I appreciate Al Balinsky and ABR and Scarboro Mazda for putting this together. I'm even happy you guys raised $1000 for Sick Kids.

What I'd like changed for next year is that:

1. this not be an RX8 focused event where you guys all lapped in a faster group, as if the rest of us are just tagging along.

2. if Al says we'll hit a certain speed, let's aim for that...and having groupings of experienced and inexperiencd drivers will halp make it more fun than "RX8's and the rest of the Mazda's".

I had a lot of fun last year when I went, and I even wrote a glowing review of it:

http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=24695&highlight=mosport

this event that I went to this year was not the same, and in my eyes as a participant, the difference is that the RX8 club decided to round up their members and make a fund raiiser out of it...increasing participation numbers, yes, but diminished the fun factor for the rest of us...(how many of you guys were even there last year?)

if you guys have a problem with how I have respectfully expressed myself to begin with, take it up with me...

Thief and I met...we see each other on the commute almost everyday...if you also have a problem with what I've said, talk to me...don't stay on your board and take pot-shots at another Mazda...

You guys can make this sour if you want, but in my eyes, successful organizers actually appreciate feedback from participants to improve their events.

erm...I went to the track to help you guys raised funds and do a few laps...expecting to have some fun while I chatted with my fellow Mazda owners...

I didn't go to tag along with a RX8 event...

and don't make this about cars...and your club...as unlike you guys, schpilling ish about other cars isn't how I go about making friends...last year I made friends with 2 RX8 guys and 2 MS6 guys and I even went to the track with a few of them...

Maybe you're right...this parade lap event is best left for those who don't track and be grateful they even got to lap Mosport at the graces of the RX8 club.

I will respond here address you directly instead of an inter-forum pissing match.

First, the comment was a joke and obviously you don't take it well.

Second, if you want UNRESTRICTED throttle speed, go for a PROPER track day. This is a PARADE lap. I hit 168km/h on Sunday but only when there was a gap. Your car is much faster than an Rx8 on the back straight from turn 5 to turn 8 so yeah I do understand your frustration. BUT again, this is not a track day - a proper one at Mosport will cost you $375 (Not the DDT crap)

Last year due to LACK of participation there are a lot of space to run. This year, there are very good participation. Hence the difference in running space.

Finally, as for your other question, have I laid down any hot laps at Mosport before? Yes I did and I crap my pants at turn 4 many times. I even have Al driving MY car on hot pursuit of a Mazdaspeed Rx8. Accidents happened before my eyes on those track days too.

One of the major organizers already responded in your thread (rev-illusions). Just to recap, last year was a blast for you since there are only less than 20 cars. This year we have over 40 hence we have to adjust on-the-fly. We will definitely create a better plan "B" next time.

We don't want to start a pissing match so most of us will refrain from posting here. I apologize if you do not have any fun at all this year. The organizers will make sure they have a better plan next time in terms of speed gaps. Your "experience/inexperience" suggestion is good and will definitely be considered.

Happy Motoring.

Fobio:

First, I wasn't the one who made that comment.

This event wasn't just about the RX-8 club. This was about Mazda's. We had a number of mazda 6 club members say it was one of the best meets they've gone to in awhile and the 7 guys that came seemed to enjoy it as well. If you could please give me more examples of how you've been hard done by I'd love to hear them. I'll try to do something about it next year, but at this point all I'm hearing is that you're peeved you couldn't go faster.

This was a charity event. It had nothing to do with getting into the papers or anything of that nature. The 8 club wasn't looking for "glory" or anything like that. You know... charity? Doing something good for others less fortunate?

In addition, the food that we brought was not just for the RX-8 club, it was for everyone. People were encouraged to make a donation to sick kids if they wanted too, but it was not a requirement.

The 8's ended up going first because their was more of them. Period. End Stop.

You know what... screw it. I guess the simple thing to say is that you came to the wrong event. You wanted to go to a track day rather then a parade lapping session.

All the best.

enough of your insinuations and pot-shots...you guys could've done it better and all I did was point it out.

I know what a track day is, I know what parade laps are...and they are both supposed to be fun. Sorry, I didn't receive the fun you guys prescribed on this parade lap event. My expectations were set higher by Al last year.

I am very sorry that the event didnt meet up to your expectations. We had more than double the cars from last year, and as such broke into 2 groups. I was driving the pace car as I did last year, and we are limited to the speed of the cars behind us. In both groups after only 1 lap we were almost in turn 8 while cars were still coming out of turn 5. That forced us to reduce the speed. This event is not intended to give people who have track experience a high performance ride around the grand prix track, rather novices who never would have that opportunity. The majority of the 50+ people have been posting and calling to say what a great time they had, and have asked us to do it again next year........which we will. We also raised $1000.00 for sick kids hospital.

Thanks Al...in no way am I knocking the evnt or its organizers. Just as others pointed out that this may not be the event for me, I also want to point out that perhaps having 40+ ppl who are mostly novice on a track, eventho it's a parade lap(s) isn't that great of an idea...and I want to make this clear:

some of the guys behind me started leaving large gaps so THEY can go fater themselves thru certain sections...I was egged on to do the same, but I would not hold up anyone behind me. Because of the grouping and some bad apples leaving gaps for themselves, it made the whole group slow down and made it easier for the pace car to catch up.

Fobio,

Sorry you didn't have fun. This event has been around for some time. Used to be only a few RX7's. As the event grew bigger more cars started showing up. This opened up to other Mazda's in the following years. Inevitably, the spirited driving became more of a parade lapping. This was okay as it was still enjoyable but some lost interest (as you've seen there were few RX7's).

You lucked out last year being at the front of the pack. The best way to make it a better event is to offer some of your help for next near.

The few comments/opinions of a few members don't represent the club as a whole. Please don't hold anything against the club. We are a small group and could always use more members.

Hey...you know when I was cooking dinner...I was actually thinking I could help out next yr...but with all the feathers I've ruffled, I doubt they'd even register me next yr...

Let me know where I can help...my dad's first new car was a 626...this MS3 is the first one I'll be paying off myself.

Don't be so sure of that!

This whole thing has gotten out of hand (I'm sure you'd admit that as well). A number of the folks at 8 club spent a lot of time and effort into trying to organizing this event. Aside from arranging the track time, most of the planning and volenteer work done to actually facilitate this past meet was done by the rx8club members. If any thing that is why a lot of them have reacted the way they did (myself included) as some of your comments came off as being quite harsh.

As mentioned, we wanted to try and make this event as fun as possible and tried to extend it out to people who normally wouldn't make it out to such events a long with the diehards.

One thing that's been made clear as a result of this ongoing dialogue is that there needs to be more clarity in terms of what is happening up front. If you truely do have an interest in assisting with this event next year I will take you up on it. I just have to stress that this event is ment to try and get as many people out with their cars and (like it or not) there will be a charity element to it.

If you have any more comments with regards to how we may be able to improve this meeting in the future, please PM me with your suggestions.

Sorry to have come off a little harsh...I had 4 laps @ around 3000rpm to stew my frustrations...along with a passenger who's a race-bike driver, who drove in on his dirt bike to "show me some lines"...all I was looking for is a spirited drive.

Let's be on the same page at least, about one thing: fun.

I'll write it again: I'm all for charity...I work for a bank, and fund raising is my second job. Maybe that's why I don't need a reason to donate $20 to a cause....and like it or not, if this event will move forward being a charity focused event to be run EXCLUSIVELY by the RX8 club, well...you can see how that may proceed...

I agree getting the numbers up is good in the long run, but was there ever a mission statement to the event? I hear all kinds of stuff: we're there to watch Al race, we're there to escape the mother-in-law, we're there to raise funds, we're there to hang out, we're there for a Mazda meet...ok...

I thought this was a good showing of Mazda's...doing what they do best...to zoom-zoom...and I mean this as spirited driving, not 10/10ths, Schumacher qualifying for Monaco BS...seriously, we're there to provide entertainment and fill some track time while the track can take a lunch break...why not put on a good show? Hopefully ppl see how capable road going Mazda's are on a track and might even buy another Mazda! But from my experience with you and your club today, I am obviously in the minority...

I'll go along with even helping you promote your charity event again on TM3 next year, encouraging ppl to attend this charity event and get a few cruising laps in...but I challenge you and your club to balance fun and fund-raising...and perhaps you can have over 100 Mazda's of all strips show up, each donating $20 to Sick Kids to watch Al race and win, and maybe 30 lucky Mazdas will be drawn randomly to get 10 properly spirited laps in.

I am not going to comment but some of his statements are really unfounded. Can't he have fun in the turns instead of keep asking for top speed?

Oh wait...he cant...:P

Fobio was kind enough to let me ride along for these parade laps. I totally agree with his frustration. In fact I am sure that he was refering to me as the one to egg him on to make a gap so that he could "catch up!" Like a team player, he followed the car in front (we were 4th from the leader) at the same consistent gap that the first two were at. We ranged from 100 to 120 km/hr on the back straight. Fobio had to come off the throttle through out the corners because he would creep up to the guy in front. Fobio kept the revs around 3000rpm because anything more was totally unecessary and require braking. The pace was the same as any suburb speed enforced road in the gta.

Maybe a little excitement was unrealistic? I guess it depends on what your expectations were. Judging from his experience from the previous year, his expectations were not met. It is unfair to jump all over him for voicing his opinion and giving his feedback. Feedback will help to prepare for next year and give people an idea ahead of time what to expect so that they know what they are getting into.

Btw the all of the cars were beautifull. The track is awesome debateable between Tremblant as the best in the country. Wouldn't it be great if we could organize a Mazda track day on the big track and divide it into three sessions, novice intermediate and expert. This way, everyone could participate at a pace that best suites their needs.

we need to organize this pent up case of the fast and the insatiable need to remind ourselves how fortunate we are to get to do what we do, into a Mazda-sponsored charity event that can showcase both "show" and "go" in a controlled environment where everyone will have fun!

too bad they lost $731 million this quarter...:bang

Next year we will be sure to put another pace car at the rear like we did last year to ensure than the people hanging back dont ruin it for everyone. Like i said in my previous post, my speed is dictated by my rear view mirror. The tighter the cars are behind me the faster I am able to go. I am truly sorry that a few had to ruin the laps of many.

pls guys...no more apologies...:blush

my points, tho harsh, were really meant to improve next year...some of the faster cars can even offer rides at a faster pace (for a donation)...I'd bring an extra helmet and bring on a rider if they want to try out some Mazdaspeed... :bana2

You also have to realize that the club running the weekend has tons of insurance regulations about non race cars without safety equipment on track etc. We are also limited to about 20-30 minutes of track time depending on how the morning racing goes. We wil try and make improvements for next year.
