I would say +40 to +52 to be safe, not sure though.

ok... the ones I am looking at are +40

+52 is the offset of stock 17" mazda3 rims. i have seen any aftermarket rims with an offset higher than that. +45 you're still safe. +40 might stick out too much already

They are actually +42. You think thats ok? They 18" with 235/40R18 tires.

42 is okay. But if you are lowered, you may run. Tires are not the right size though. You are going to want 225/40/18

How wide are the rims?

my aftermarket 17's were i beleive 7"s wide, with a 42 offset, and i was running 205/50R17 tires.
i only rubbed on big dips in the road, but only cuz im really lowered on coilovers.
+45 is probably your best bet, but when you really tihnk about it, its only a 3mm difference.

8" wide try to go find as close to 50 as possible
7" (yuck) then try 45+ 'to be safe' it also depends on tires

i think you have that the wrong way...
the higher the offset, the more the wheel tucks into the fender
the lower the offset, the more the wheel will be to the fender, and/or poke out from the fender.
but then again, your a vdubber, so i think you know what your talking about...
but myself, for an 8" wide wheel, i'd try to go for +40 to +45.
+45 if your lowered, however, i was fine with +42 and slammed.

What? +40 on an 8 inch wheel? That'd be 22mm further out than stock, which is quite significant. Generally, if you don't want to roll your fenders +48 or higher is seen as acceptable for that width of rim, even lowered.
+45 could work, depends on the set up.

have you seen stock wheels?
and 22mm isnt that far. its a little over 2 cms. my stock steelies are buried in the fenders... make me want to slam the car even more, and tuck em.
besides, wheels look best, with little fender gap, and as flush with the fenders as possible.
poke is acceptable too, on certain vehicles.

I'm not going from those steelies though, I'm going from the stock 17's. so you're adding an inch and a half of rim width, 2 cm of tire width, and going with a 12.5mm lower offset. Pretty significant.
I have 16x8 +50 with 225's and it's tight. +48 could fit. +45, expect to have to roll in the rear. +40, you're going to have to get creative. We don't have the best fenders for aggressive offsets here.
The big issue here isn't when the car is sitting still. The problem starts when you begin to move. When the suspension compresses that flush tire will rub on the fender lip. You have coilovers correct? So the spring rates are stiffer than what 95% of the people on here have. That helps you because it takes more for your fender to come down and hit that tire.

So if I was going with a 7" wheel what would be ideal? I am looking at a set that is +45. They are not to most expensive rims but I just spent $400 for rims I really don;t like on the car and another $600 for rubber So I want to keep the cost down on new ones and maybe use the same rubber this year and buy a lower profile tire next year. These are what I am looking at.

Yup, a 7" +45mm is going to fit fine. Just stick with a proper sized tire, and no issues :)

yes i do, and good point.
but then agian, how much inner clearance do you have?
cuz im tihnking about going 17x8 this year, but im more worried about rubbing on something inside the wheel well...

A cm or so I'd say. Enough to not rub, but close enough to make me wonder.

+ 50 is ok, + 48 is the furthest I would go. If you have your car lowered and you go lower than 48 then your probably going to have clearance issues.

Isn't that a tad skinny? I went on some rim sites and their fitment guide states 215/40/18 is ideal for a 3 but most people here get 225/40/18.
EDIT: Sorry was that question for what the 2010 was on the previous post?

for that wide of a wheel 215 is wide enough, i would actually prefer skinnier tires on the 7.5" wheel, the 225s would look too wide on this wheel

I am planning on the following: 225/40/18, and offset of new rims would be 46, and i'll be lowered 1.18. Would I rub?

I believe you don't want to go below +48mm otherwise if you lock your wheel you're going to be rubbing with those tires.

225/40 on a +46 shouldn't rub. I am going 225/45/17 with +45 and have been assured it will not rub even lowered.

I think it should be okay. Saw on Mazda3forums a few cars with 18x8 and 45 offsets, so 46 should be okay. Just 1mm diff.

It'll fit, but you might have to roll your fenders to avoid rubbing when carrying a big load, or if you drop.

The stock offset is +55. I dont believe that a +46 with a wider tire would not interfere with the rear fender unless a lot of rear negative camber was dialed in.

It should be okay. I've seen 18x8 with +45 lowered on S Techs, and it was okay. He had 215s, im getting 225s

I bought a magazine called "2009 ultimate wheel and tire guide" they calculated for the Mazda 3 04-09
PCD (pitch circle diameter or "hole pattern") 5x114.3mm (5x4.5")
ET (einpress tief, that's German for "pushed in depth" or offset) 48
Bore 67.1
Thread Pitch 12x1.5" nut
Wheel size 15x7, 16x7, 17x7.5, 18x7.5, 19x7.5
Tire sizes 195/65-15, 205/55-16, 205/50-17, 215/40-18, 215/35-19
Hope this helps out!

Some wheel sizes are missing, like 18x8.
Don't fully rely on that. Just speak with a rim and tire dealer, and ur good

I'm planning on lowering the car on Prokit, will this setup work for me?
Car: 2009 Mazda 3 GT Sedan
Wheel: GP Wheel GR3 17x7 offset +42
Rubber: 205 50 R17
Springs: Eibach prokit
I'm basically using the stock 17 tires for now for the summer, I might change it next season but at the moment I don't intend on buying a different set of tires. Right now I'm sitting on stock springs but I would really like to lower it on prokits. Feedbacks from experts and from people who've ran the setup would be much appreciated.

Question for you, how low was your car? How bad were these rubbing on big dips?
I plan to run a similar setup with 205 50 r17 tires, 17x7 wheels with +42 offset. I also plan to lower the car on prokits, now I just want to make sure it'll be all good from an actual mazda 3 driver. I want to make sure everything will be ok until I go ahead with the plan. Thanks again!
