Now this is something amazing. This high-definition panoramic photo was taken with a 1,474-megapixel robotic camera -- about 300 times more powerful than a standard 5-megapixel digital camera -- of the crowd at Barack Obama's presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. last month.

Just to clarify, I'm pretty sure this is not from a single 1,474-megapixel robotic camera as I'm not sure such technology exists today.

It's most likely taken with multiple cameras and stitched together using technology like Seadragon by (Microsoft) LiveLabs (http://livelabs.com/seadragon/) which resulted in a single image equaling 1,474 MP.

I believe these pictures were taken with multiple Canon G10's (14.7MP camera).

CNN did something like this during their coverage of the inauguration taking various photos submitted by viewers/the public that attended.

It's many cameras. And then the multiple photos are rendered together into one giant photo. As stated earlier by Xerox. He says its numerous Canon G10s and those things probably will run ~600 each. They are awesome cameras. I got the G9 myself and love it.
