Hey guys. So just unloaded some pics off my camera and I decided to post them up here for you guys to see. The camera i used that day was my Canon 40D with 28-135mm f/3.5-5 lens. I was using iso 100 and was on manual mode the whole day.

Please let me know what i did right or wrong, and give me some feedback on what i should do next so i can improve. And also give me some tips on how to take better pics next time.

The pictures were never edited.

The Red mercedes was the one i really liked.

Great pics Kev. All I can say is the more u use the camera/takes pics, you find out what you can or can not do with the camera. IMHO there is no such thing as a bad picture. You learn from each shot and become a better photographer. My suggestion for taking pics of the cars at an angel is try to get all of the car next time.
Kudos to you using the camera in manual...so much more flexibility than being in program/automatic mode.

I agree with the above comments. You gotta make mistakes to see what you gotta do right. Shooting in aperture priority might be an in between step to practice on unless your fully comfortable with manual mode.

But the autoshow is a great place to try all sorts of different techniques. I could shoot that Lamborghini ALL day. That colour is perfection.

The pics actually a lot better on my computer before they were all resized. And thanks for the comments guys. I'll try to take more pics when the weather gets warmer and try to play around more with my camera. The one thing i want to learn or work on is adjusting the white balance. It seems like my pics are kinda off in color sometimes.

Then there's no problem. Use photoshop or equivalent (is there one?) and set it for the colour temperature the shot was used. Incandescent, halogen, florescent, etc and then tweak from there.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Hope you don't mind, I'm going to offer some constructive criticism :)

Framing is always important in taking a shot, as is cropping afterwards. I'm not sure which it is, but some could use some work. The STI feels too closely cropped, and the top of the bike is cut off.

I also realize you may have been limited by the width of your lens, but for the Audi and Lambo they feel cut off without the front end; I would have focused on a sharper angle down the sides (ie taken closer to the centre-line of the car, looking down the sides), you did a better job of this with the Merc SUV. The red Merc is a great example of a dramatic detail shot as well.

I like the shots, I just feel with a bit more work in the composition they will really stand out :bana

^^ that is great help... Thats something i wanted. I know it takes a lot of practice to get something right but, comments and criticism is also something that will help one grow/learn.

Thanks for the input and i will for sure work on what you just mentioned. As i said, this is really my first attempt in taking pics outside from people.

(You probably already know this)
Part of what is happening here - You're now going to enter the world of colour managment (I personally hate it).

From how the camera takes the picture, to how that will translate in regards to colour on your monitor, my monitor, on the web for all others too see, printed or on other devices (iPod Touch, laptop, TV) will all be dependant on the colour space each output device is at. Hence as you've commented, the pictures look a lot better on your computer, but not as good say on the web or on anther person's computer. Sometimes you can find out the colour space profile for device and set Lightroom/PS to that so when colour editing the final product will look closer for others to see as how you saw it.

Looks like you're off to a good start and I like what i'm seeing. Just keep taking pictures and as you've probably heard enough now, you'll get better at it and you'll also start to develop a style of your own.

As for white balance - though the camera may be on Auto WB, trying looking at changing it to the other settings. To complicate matters - sometimes your subject may be in a room that has both incadescent and fluorescent bulbs on and have sun coming in from a window, which makes it tricky for appropriate WB.

Pending my being able to get out to meets (I'm a dad now), guess we can talk 40D stuff :)

I missed this comment. If you use photoshop there is an awesome resizing action called Manyk SRS (http://news.deviantart.com/article/20250/); it is a multi-step (but automated process) which resizes and blends three unsharp-mask layers. I use it for all my web resizing, it is obviously editable to set the size constraints. The page I posted has all the details on how it works and how to use it.

I even worked in my border actions as well :) Definitely my most used action.
