View Full Version : Barn Find : Do I go for it?

So, I may (or may not) be left with a tough decision soon.
As some of you know, I recently sold my 1966 Mustang regretably. Though I did make a good profit on the car! So my dad calls me up, the one that did a good portion of the work on the 66 and told me not to be bringing him more of those, and tells me he may have found something for me if I'm interested.... Kind of threw me a bit after what he told me after the 66, but maybe he is getting bored again (he's retired) I also sold the 66 because I have baby #2 on the way and the wife lost her job last june (she can get one again when she wants to though, she is in a good field)
So here is the "barn find" as I know so far:
Price: $2500
Car : 1969 Mustang Fastback (no word on Mach1 or not)
Story so far : Been sitting for 20 years, in peices but all there.
So, with a baby on the way, do I "find" the money for this thing?? 69 is my next choice behind the 67-68 body..... And Fastbacks are rare....
I'll be sure to take pics "as found" if I can get ahold of this beauty!

Would you have time to work on it?

If you've got the space for it, go ahead! No one says you need to finish restoring it ASAP, it can be a longer-term project.
If you are back to work then i would but if not maybe you should hold off untill you get back to work..my $.02

I say you go for it!!
If the Fastback is pretty rare then you may not get another chance to do so. :)
(Also I would never encourage people to borrow money and live beyond their means but with interest rates so low these days, you could always get a line of credit to pay for the purchase and then slowly pay it back over the next few months. At today's low interest rates, you wouldn't end up paying much interest on $2500).
Anyway just my 2 cents...post some pics if you get the chance!
Good luck :)

If your dad doesn't mind doing most of the work while you chip in from time to time, why not? Maybe you'll be able to keep this one! :)

That's mighty tempting...
If you have the cash or can get it somewhat easy without really being too bad...I'd say go for it

..hmmm if I was in your situation , I'd wait due to the second baby (congrats btw) . Just kids can be expensive. Or what B.Rabbit said where you chip in once and a while.

IF it materializes (and thats a big "IF" at this point), I think Go Habs Go has the right idea... find the money to buy it, and work on it when more money becomes available... That way, atleast I have it. I have a place it can go, so it won't rust away.... And it will always hold its value if something drastic were to happen.... or maybe just buy it and sell it, make a couple bucks. I guess I have options! lol

If you have the space to store it (in a good storage area where it won't devalue) while you don't work on it yes. However if storing it is a burden on your wallet or anyone don't do it.
I had to sell my first car cause I couldn't store it at my dads until I went all out with it (I was talking a 10 year time span haha).
I liked your last stang a lot.

listen to the little red guy on your shoulder saying get it get! As long as the initial cost isn't going to be big of a burden you can parcel it out bit by bit for the restore. Oh and btw depending on how many pieces its in frame on or frame off restoration?

+1
I would have to say go for it. This way, you have it. If you have it for 10 years before you can afford to work on it properly so be it.
How many chances come along like this anymore? Not too many.

My above opinion may be biased as it has always been a dream of mine to find something like this.
Quick funny story;
Back in the early 90's my girlfriend at the time lived on a farm. Out in the barn way out back for at least a year I had noticed a car shaped sheet in the back corner, mostly covered with hay and such.
Her brother and I more or less fantasized over what could be under there. A Plymouth Superbird? A Chevelle SS or even Shelby Mustang?
One day we worked our way back into that corner to put these thoughts to rest.
Only to discover that under that sheet lay a mid 80's V6 Firebird.:complain

lol Denied!
I looked at a 67 Mustang Convertible last year, and the guy took me to his dad's barn to look at some of the parts that came with it. What was in the barn too?
1965 Vette Roadster
1955 T-bird Roadster....
Such a shame, sitting there covered in dust, no car covers at all....
My old neighbour has a 1969 Mustang Fastback (Mach1 clone) that has been sitting since he got married, over 20 years now. He's divorced now though, maybe he will do something with it, cause he wouldn't sell it to me no matter what I did! Even flashed $10K in his face!!! (had just sold a car, had it in hand....lol)

So, any updates on the car kevcol?!
kevcol74
03-05-2009, 11:48 PM
Nope, no updates so far....
Here is the story, my dad's friend was talking to a guy, the guy was interested in my dad's friend's tractor, offered a trade. The friend wasn't interested, but told my dad about it, apparently a 69 Fastback thats been sitting for 20 years (in a garage, not actually a barn, thats a reference for this kind of find.
So the guy won't tell my dad where it is, he is worried that my dad will then spend all his time on the Mustang, when his friend wants him to do hi 67 Falcon in the spring. So my dad was going to set him straight on that, as I won't have the money to put into it right now, only in the future.
So, still waiting to hear what is next.... if anything. I'm not getting my hopes up too high. But, I will keep y'all posted, and post pictures of the find if it happens!
What's your heart telling you? What do you want? ....if you need to take out an LOC it may not be the best choice, but you won't have regrets. When you're done you can always sell the car for more than you invested and make a profit.
