I'm thinking about getting Pro-Kits, for sure - but what would you guys recommend for replacement shocks that would be stronger/better than the stock?

Or mazdaspeed; but the Koni yellows are really good, I have to admit.

How much do they typically go for? Any recommended shops/sponsors to check out for them?

For mazdaspeed, call Flipdady; SSG can get you the Koni's I believe. In the Marketplace under Current Deals, there is a list of mazdaspeed parts and the current prices (I think all 4 will cost around $560+).

oh wow.. holy crap
with the pro-kits being $300
i guess i expected shocks to be the same if not less.. but i guess it makes sense they would cost more

use the stocks until they give.. Many members are still on stock shocks.. Even after a few years with prokits..

Im going to keep my stock shocks right now wiith the prokits

But otherwise yeah i heard koni yellows like everyone else has said.. I think new konis are about 1000

I JUST got my suspension done at jimmys. On KYB GR-2 + Prokits. So far so good ! I WAS going to get koni yellows but it was too much $$ for me.

Your stock shocks will be fine. It will diminish the life of them faster with the Pro Kits, but there is no need to change them right away.

If still want to changer your shocks, with all the money you are going to be spending, you should look into getting Full Coilover's instead.

PM Rick. I believe he has the Yonaka one's on sale this week for Performance World.

most of the user I see on this board are just daily driver, meaning street use and not track use...

I think everyone will be happy with just rolling with Koni FSD (if you have the wallet for it)

or for everyone's budget and use I believe the KYB GR2 will be a great upgrade from the stock shocks, despite them being labeled as OEM replacement, but still with the GR2 will offer a slight improvement over stock.

Why not Koni Yellow??? the price you are paying for them and adjustability for just a shock, is way too much IMO and better to go full-coilover...

Adjustable Coilovers is about 1.5 to 2 times the price of shocks & springs, depending on the type of adjustments you want.

Doesn't KYB offer adjustable shocks as well?

are sure Fuman?????

I have see Tein Basics (height adjustable) and some other non name companies such as Yonaka (height adjustable)

and they are listed about $1100 or was it a grand for that.....

heck mazdaspeed full-coilovers go for about $1300 I think last time I checked

so lets see, $800 koni Yellows + $300 or so for lowering springs.....at a ride height that is not adjustable.....

as I see it most people on this board will not the ride quality adjustability that Koni Yellow's have, why just have shock that is just ride quality adjustable and not height...makes no sense to pay $800 or so for that....

Following prices in USD.
$826 for koni shocks and springs (http://www.nsnmotorsports.com/product_info.php?products_id=238&osCsid=ab8a68b45180081404155b777455de63
)
$1250.00 for Tein basic (http://www.tein.com/price/mazda.html)
1250/826 = 1.51
That is where I got my numbers from. So if one wanted rebound/bound adjustable dampers price for the coilover will go up.
As you said, you can likely find the Basics/other coilovers for cheaper, same applies to the koni kit though. (I got the kit near that price
with tax/duties/shipping from the states awhile year or two ago.)
If you want to mix and match springs, if you shop around, it'll probably only cost roughly $900.

Simple Answer to your thread title question...

Not necessary at all, but its obviously better.

Many members have done more than 50,000kms with the stock shocks and pro kits.
