I just bought my 05 sedan in December and I can see rust bubbles forming where there weren't any when I bought it. I know this is a known problem but do I have a chance with Mazda fixing it even if I bought it used?

don;t think so, the warranty doesn't cover rust/paint

They should fix it no problem; the owner of the vehicle is, in Mazda Canada's eyes, the person they're dealing with. If your car is rusting, they can't just blame it on the former owner...

It has been a real hassle to get Mazda Canada to do anything about rust on these cars even for the original owners. The 2004's seem especially prone.
IMO you will have an even harder time. Good luck to you though.

Yes absolutely they will. My '05 is used and it's in getting repainted as we speak! No questions were asked, and it's fully covered.

That's funny, my 2005 is also used, Black Mica, and is also in the shop getting fixed at the moment. I'm supposed to pick it up on Saturday.
Betty, we should take some pics and compare the work between our two cars; if there's a substantial difference in the quality of one, we could probably use the evidence from the other to go back and get the work done right.
Or, just have Mazda say "Scott, I am sick of seeing your face in here, you bastard." Either/or.

Well as far as I know, it's 5 years since the car was first purchased. So this may be the last few months for the 04's, depending on when you bought it.
But, I'm sure that a call to Mazda Canada/a cry fest (mostly if you're a girl lol) should change their minds, what's an extra couple of months to them?! If it means a returning customer I'm sure they'd help you out...

I called Scarboro Mazda and said there were some bubbles on the wheelwell. I was told it had to be checked by the service manager. It was checked this afternoon and said it's under warranty because my car is still 10 days before 5 years. As I also have extended warranty, the rental is covered.

tried today, they won't fix the rust even though i'm only 10 days pass my ****ing warranty....... even thought it is obvious that the rust didn't just start after the warranty expires...

If you plan to keep your car for another 5+ years--- do yourself a favour and look around to have the rust fixed by a reputable body shop.
I bought a 04 silver Gt, and 1 year ago a local dealer "fixed" the rust coming from the rear wheel wells----- and the rust is coming back.....
This summer I found a local shop that will do both sides , properly, and warrant their work for 5 years.
I think most dealership <warranty> work is done fast and on the cheap....... Im sure there are good dealers out there, its just hard to find them.
The rear wheel wells and under the doors are the weak point on almost any mazda.........
I saw an 04 RX8 that was just destroyed by rust in these areas....:(

Where did you have it done Cinder and how much did it cost. I am havgin the same problems and am also passed the 5 year mark

Any body shop will do it for around $500.00
I went through a friend of the family who works out of a dealership in Orleans......
Of course it all depends on how bad the rust is on your mazda------
mine was minimal, but I wanted to get it taken care of quickly-
The guy that did the work mentioned that it was not the paint but in fact the sheet metal from mazda. Something about defective preparation.
A very high percentage of mazda's made in the 90's and 2000's, have been rusting in the rear quarter panels. This is no coincidence, just poor metal and prep.
Also ask around, someone is bound to know a friend in the auto industry who could give you a deal.
Good luck..:)
Also keep an eye under all your doors------- every year I wipe them off and apply clear nail polish to all the metal seams---- this is where rust can start on any car!

Yeah they probably mean there is nothing that they can do, you'd have to go to the dealer. The thing is it's supposedly a 5 year warranty for the rust, so if you got your car before March 24, 2004 then it'd be expired by now and unfortunately there's nothing they can do. There probably are some dealerships out there who will help you out, but there's a few out there that won't bother once the warranty is finished.
So if your warranty hasn't expired, I say visit a few dealerships to see what they can do (because a lot of us have already had this taken care of, and without bugging Mazda Canada about it). If it has expired, and it wouldn't have been that long ago if it's only a 2005, then raise a stink and show them proof that many others have gotten theirs fixed with no hassles.
And for your reference:

I brought my car back to the dealership I bought my used '04 at yesterday (Westowne Mazda). My Rust & Corrosion Warranty expires April 23 so indeed, it does last for 5 years. I have a big rust patch on my rear fender where it meets the rear bumper. In addition to that, I have paint bubbling under the wheel wells. they took pics of my car yesterday and will be getting back to me this week once they get the estimate from the body shop and sign-off from Mazda Canada.

Your absolutely right Phil, if people would just check their warranty booklets or the Mazda.ca site they would see that they are covered for 5 Years/Unlimited mileage for rust perforation.
Best advice imho is; As soon as you see rust forming; Take a (dated) photograph of the area.
And for those that are being ignored or turned away by their dealers; Try Scarboro Mazda, talk to Russell...they are really good about honouring warranty issues!!

Scarboro Mazda eh?? Where is this dealership located exactly? I am curious when the wifes 04 was actually purchased originally, and see if it has corrosion warranty left... if not... do the have a reputable body shop? Cause we have to get the rear bumper painted and/or installed too.

SCARBORO MAZDA. 2124 Lawrence Avenue East. Phone: (416) 752-0970
call them and make an appointment because the Service Manager, Russ, has to check the rust and determine if it's under warranty. So if your car was bought within 5 years and the rust is from inside, i.e. not due to stone chips, it should be covered under warranty.
