So i recieved a speeding ticket that was reduced from 20km over to 10 km over. I just went to court to change my court date and the crown said that they could raise the fine back to 20 km over and increase the fine stated on the ticket if I choose to fight it. Does anyone know if this is a scare tactic or can they really raise the fine.

I don't know for sure, but I have to believe that is a scare tactic. Once the ticket is written, I don't see that they could increase the ticket.

I agree that it's a scare tactic. A lawyer would have a field day with that.
"Your worship, the crown can't seem to decide at what speed my client's car was traveling nor what they want to charge him with. Was it 20 over or was it 10 over...or was my client traveling at the correct speed? If the crown can't seem to decide, I request a stay until the crown can perhaps get its act together and decide at which speed my client was traveling."

i'd bring my cellphone out turn on the voice memo function and ask them to repeat exactly what they said for the record!! If what they are telling you is true they should have no problem repeating it again! If they don't I'd get the guys full name and report it to the supervisors that he's trying to scam me.

Actually they can correct the ticket to the speed you were caught doing. It is a scare tactic so you dont waste the courts time fighting this because you were already given a break! Believe it or not but it is true!

Did you ask them to reduce it or did they just do it anyway so they could say, to the judge "I already reduced the ticket, what more does he want?"

It was reduced when i recieved the ticket. The crown knew that it was reduced (probably in the cops documents) and said that it could go back to the original amount. I'm second guessing if i should take the risk and fight it or just pay it off since it is my first ticket. It's a gamble.

Frankly, whether it's 20 over or 10 over doesn't really matter. The difference in fine is trivial, and the 3 points only matter if you've already got a bunch of points on record and are worried about losing your license.
To your insurance company, the two are identical and either will have exactly the same effect.
That said, if you're going to fight it then fight to get it dropped completely. Don't worry about them changing the charge.

If its the same in the eyes of the insurance company then i guess i will fight it. I have already switched the court date so i can hope the cop does'nt show. Thanks for the replies.

If your ticket has an R noted on the speed portion, that's a clear indication to the judge that the officer was lenient on you when he gave you the ticket and already reduced it.
If you choose to fight the ticket, the officer can present evidence of your original speed and you will be charged under the original speed and fully points will be implemented again.
You are also correct, that to your insurance, points or no point, it's a speeding ticket and will reflect negatively on your record.
