So,

After much debate, and many others debating what JDM is....

Why not start a thread on it and what people think. :chuckle

Acronym-Definition
JDM Japanese Domestic Market

Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) is a term for Japan's economic market for Japanese-brand goods, such as automobiles and parts. The term's most common application is to Japanese-brand automobiles built specifically for the Japanese market (designed and constructed to conform to Japanese vehicle and equipment regulations and to suit Japanese market preferences). JDM vehicles migrate to other markets through ordinary commerce and the grey market.

In automotive culture, JDM refers to a style of modifying automobiles, mainly cars of Japanese origin. The cosmetic style of components is often preferred[who?] over pure function. True JDM components are also preferred[who?] over Japanese aftermarket parts. An example of such a preference is the import of used Japanese engines to North America to be put into Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi sports and street cars for higher performance outputs.

So , just out of humour sake and the point of this debate, I'm seeing over and over again people saying JDM headlights , JDM rainguards :chuckle, JDM this and JDM that... yes and I will admit I am a victim of saying JDM tight and now that's JDM .

JDM= 1) for some, it means CHEAP mods to their car (painting their hood and rims black, or installing cheap black plastic front lips on Honda/Acuras, etc) to give it a "JDM" look (Japanese Tuner Look) which is so totally wrong. Oh, and buying Rota wheels. They are made in the Philippines, and not Japan, and are knockoffs of REAL JDM wheels (Volk, 5zigen, Mugen, etc.)

2) For the real JDM fanatics, it means importing "high end" tuning parts that cost an arm-and-a-leg to ship over, and that are also very rare.

The question is does one know when to stop modding because their car is rice? lol I get teased all the time for the blue turnsignals lol maybe I've gone too far....

JDM is like you said in the OP. Parts that are available on the Axela (Japan's version of the Mazda3) which are not available here in North America.
You can mod your car with JDM parts and not be called a riceboy...but that's just my opinion. OEM/JDM parts are the way to go as they don't scream rice.

BTW aren't blue turn signals illiegal?

JDM is simply the use of appropriate aftermarket parts in good taste that orginate from Japan.

A JDM ride could be defined as a car that has ACTUAL parts from the manufacturer that are used only in the JDM market. Such as a JDM head or tail lamps, or a JDM item within the interior that was only available to that market.

ODD EXAMPLE: A friends friend has a Chevy Cavalier. Its an OEM USDM car, no one would argue. BUT! he uses one JDM part on his car. What you may ask? Toyota sold a Toyota Cavalier (essentially the same car as the Chevy) that had different taillights and mirrors that were used in Japan to adhere to their vehicle law requirements. This guy has a set of the JDM Cavalier side mirrors. I've also seen a Cavalier at C7 here in Ontario that has the JDM Toyota Cavalier Tail lights (which are not red like the USDM but have an amber turn signal and extra bulb for the JDM).

SO!!! These Chevy Cavaliers owned by these guys are not JDM they are USDM. BUT!!! They have used some JDM parts.

Any car (technically) can use JDM parts (example: any car could use a Tein Suspension). But only an actual car imported from Japan can be trully JDM.

Oh man that picture is so true. Although I loved my civic and would do it again, and plan on doing it again for a project/track car, I made fun of civic owners everyday in timmies parking lots..

pure JDM cars would be something imported from Japan with RHD.
JDM cars could be anything that was built in Japan and being modded to JDM style/parts.
