View Full Version : Torontomazda3 is changing hosts

Over the past month or two many members have noticed TM3 has been performing poorly, with slow response times, and double posts. We are taking action to address your concerns. We are changing hosts this weekend. All data will be migrated.
Please note from Sunday at approximately noon, until late Sunday evening or worst case Monday morning TM3 will be down.
Due to recent performance issues TM3 will be changing hosts on Sunday. As part of this, we must take the forum down for a period of time to complete the migration.
Your patience is appreciated. Should you have concerns, please let us know.

FYI:
For those who haven't been through something like this before: You may need to flush your browser's cache to force it to look for the server at its new location.

The dns should handle directing people to the proper host once it is switched.

It will but Noisy Crow is right, your cookie/cache has the old IP address still.

So my existing bookmark to the site will work? or will I have to type it in manually first and then re-bookmark?
Bookmarks will still work. Bookmarks are stored using the same text that you type in manually. The cache is where the browser keeps its local cross reference between the text URL (e.g. www.torontomazda3.ca) and the actual IP address (in this case 64.13.192.201). There's a bit more to it than that, but you get the idea.
To clear the cache:
Firefox: "Tools","Clear Private Data", make sure Cache is checked, click "okay"
IE: "Tools", "Internet Options", "General" tab, click "delete files", click "okay"

Yup...
And for the Opera users out there just in case...
Opera: "Tools", "Preferences", "Advanced" tab, "History" on the left menu, click "Empty Now"
Should be the same for OSX users too. Just has a different way to access the preferences menus.

If you have your cache to check every visit to the webpage then it will detect the new ip address. I dunno, I am just a web admin, what do I know lol. I do this stuff daily.

True, but not everyone sets it as that. So this is one of those "if you have problems, try the above"

You don't need to clear cache, just do a force refresh.
Press Ctrl+F5 for a force refresh which bypasses cache and re-gets everything for the current site only. Clearing cache effects all sites.
Xerox
03-13-2009, 09:23 PM
All this clearing cache is totally unnecessary.
The issue is that the IP address will change. The IP address will be updated automatically by the DNS servers. The only caching that may delay your computer from accessing the new server is the DNS resolver cache, NOT the browser cache.
A simple reboot will clear the DNS resolver cache.
Or, if you wanna force it without reboot, the Windows command is "ipconfig /flushdns" and you need to close and reopen your browser.
Good luck with the migration. Thanks Ami and anyone else involved for taking care of the site.

we lost some stuff from Monday. As the dns moved from the old host to the new, some people were still posting on the old site, before their systems updated.
If it is critical you have those posts and messages, I can attempt to merge the databases. However, I am really hesitant to do so.

Basically, in windows, if you click on the "start" menu, then click "run" and in that box type "cmd" then push enter, you get a window that has a black background and white text. In there, if you type "ping torontomazda3.ca", you'll get 4 lines of response back. If it shows the IP as the above IP, it's still the old one and the DNS isn't right. If it shows a new one (for me on my mac, it's pinging a start number of 216) then it should be the new one.
As the above states, in that same window you did the ping in, if you type "ipconfig /flushdns", it should clear the DNS cache and try to resolve the new one the next time you go to the site.

Iceman_F1

Ami, do you know how to do this on Mac OS?
Open up your applications (either through the dock or finder), go to utilities and then there should be something that says "network tools" or something like that. From there, a window with a few tabs should open. One of them says "ping". From there, you can ping torontomazda3.ca and see what it says. (Trying to remember this while at work on windows. I have a mac at home and I did a ping last night so I kinda remember it)
If you want to flush the cache, not sure if there's a GUI way to do it on the OSX (never needed to) but if you open up a terminal window (I think it's also under the utilities) and type the following, it should work...
OSX 10.5 -
dscacheutil -flushcache
OSX 10.4 or lower? -
lookupd -flushcache
Which I got that info from the following site...
http://osxdaily.com/2008/03/21/how-to-flush-your-dns-cache-in-mac-os-x/

Yeah, I knew you had that problem. Just saying that as I don't deal with any of that then I'm not sure as to the source of the problem and/or the fix.
From dealing with what we do at work, my guess would be it's something with the database backup (I think) but how easily that could be recovered if at all isn't something I know.
