so i've asked a few people and they said their hatch came stock with a tool tray under the carpet in the back, above the spare.........mine came with a styrofoam mold to hold the tools..
so my ultimate question is, is the tool tray stock on the hatch!?

I'm thinking they've gone to the styrofoam mold to save money. It was stock in all Mazda3 hatch models as far as I remember.

I miss mine :(
For some reason the MS3 doesn't have this feature and all we get is a piece of carpeted cardboard to cover our spare.
I don't get why and would love to see if it would still fit in there.

not only to save cost, but I am pretty sure it was to keep the trunk space and accommodate updated suspension.

I'm going to try to find someone close by with a hatch and see if it will fit in there.
If it does fit, anyone out there willing to trade me a tray for my carpeted piece of cardboard?
It's from a Speed 3 so it will probably make a regular 3 faster or handle better or something. :chuckle

Is your spare tire bigger in the Speed3? That might be why for them....

The speed3 spare is full diameter or close anyways, but not a true 'full size' This change was needed to compensate for the larger brakes, I've been told.
I think due to this change, they could not place a tray in the SP3....just not enough room!

I've been running 2 amps in the tray, covered and hidden for 3 years now with no over-heating issues whatsoever!!.I also have my cap under the smaller tray! Check out my album for pics :)

That's a nice clean set up flagrum ... Did u screw the amps to the tray? Is that tray carpeted? Does it come like that or did u add the carpet? And I'm guessing all the wiring is in the trays or underneath? ... Also does anyone know if there's a 12volt cigerette lighter thing in the trunk?

Yup!! amps are bolted with lock washers onto the tray, and 2x 1" holes and a 1" slot cut thru for the cables.Cables are bound underneath so nothing shifts or hangs, with just enough slack for removal of the tray. The carpet was an add-on for the clean look.
In my '05 there is no 12 volt outlet back there, as far as I know....All power cables were channeled up one side of the car.
