View Full Version : If the 3 sells, what choices for a used car?
kevcol74

K, I have the 3 for sale unfortunately, trying to keep money in the pocket incase my company goes under (pretty high possibility right now) Although I am seeking other employment, nothing has surfaced yet, but its only been a few days since I started looking.
Anyways, what suggestions for cars, trying to keep under 200K and maybe half the asking price of my 3 (so roughly $4000 or preferably less)
Requirements : 4 doors, prefer bottom seat anchors for the baby seat.
I'm not afraid of domestics, though I'll likely shoot down any mentions of chrysler!! :chuckle
PRefer UNBIASED opinions here. I'm not afraid of a little work on cars, I do it all myself, and have access to just about anything I may need.
So, decent looking, or reccomended from past experiences?I know, its wide open, but maybe someone will bring to light a car I'm just not thinking of!
Edit : Hoping the car will last me a year or 2... though I usually cycle cars faster than that...lol
Also atleast mid-sized.... fuel economy isn't a huge worry, but no gas guzzlers either. Mazda3 sized or bigger, no echo/yaris boxes please...

I see alot of Grand Ams for sale!! ...and before anyone makes any smartass remarks, a couple of buds at work own Grand Ams, and tell me they have been outstanding (realiability wise) one friend drives in from Bowmanville everyday, trouble free.
Maybe style wise it's little dated, but in times of practicality!.
Sorry to hear about your predicament Kevcol, hope things turn-around for you soon!!

Actually I've been eyeing the Grand Ams... as long as its the 3100, not the 3400... Or even the 2.4, my Z24 was reliable! 2.4 in stick with a 4 door would be nice, 99+ body.... not sure when they put the bottom anchors in the back though....

I'd even suggest a newer Cavalier sedan. I believe the 03+ cars have the LATCH anchors, though you'd have to verify that.
The reason I suggest them is that they're pretty basic transportation, have a decent engine (all 03+ have the Ecotec 4-cyl) and are dead simple to work on. They're cheap and there's a million of them around. You'll never be at a loss when looking to the wreckers for cheap parts.

LATCH.... it just wasn't coming to mind! lol
I know it was mandatory in Sept 02, so 03 and up models are required to have the LATCH. But, 02 Proteges had them, so its hard to know what cars had them and what years before 03....
Cav is a possibility, but I prefer the look of a Grand Am, and a little more room with the Grand Am... never had an Ecotech engine...yet....lol

Why not picking up a used Lancer? I own a Lancer myself and was thinking of getting rid of it for something bigger to lug my Dj gear around. I've looked around for pricing and they tend to be around the $5K+ mark with kms under 150K. I'm sure there's still some haggling and what not to be done, so you could possibly get it close to your budget and the pluses are the fact it's still a japanese car, quite dependable, cheap on gas, and looks pretty good all in all.

Or is it the Taurus SHO!:chuckle
Actually I looked into the SHO... up to 95 style is nicer, but too old. And the 96-99 bug eyed taurus sho isn't bad, but the 3.5 Yamaha V8 is known for catastrophic failure (timing gears actually break loose from the cam, engine go boom)
I've considered the Civic, reliable, yes, but boring and everyone has one.... Accord is on the short list. Audi.... just too expensive to fix and they WILL break down. 1.6 EL... its a civic, don't kid yourself! Phil.... you deserve a slap, Suzuki... I'm not buying a motor bike!! Lancer I'll consider as well....
Thanks for all the input guys, but still haven't seen anything that tickles my fancy.... maybe I'm too picky! To be honest, aside from the Grand Am, Subarus top my list right now....

Wow. Two opposite ends of the spectrum! If your goal is to get something that's going to be cheap and easy to maintain, I'd avoid the Subaru. They're great cars, but they're very complicated so there's a greater likelihood of something going wrong on an older one, and it will likely be more expensive to repair.
Between the boxer engine and AWD system, there's just a lot more bits and pieces to go bad.

If I could find an 03 5 door SVT Focus for $4000..... well, maybe in my dreams!! I am considering the Focus, as much as they look like ass, they are pretty reliable and cheap to fix.... Another that has made the short list...
At this point these are all general ideas, but until the 3 sells, if it does, I don't have much motiviation (I just like the 3 too much!!)
Quite honestly, unless I get what I want for the 3, its not worth selling if I'm only going to end up with a grand or 2 in the bank after a decent reliable car. I need to stay below $4000, which really limits my options if I want the LATCH system, which to me is necessary (my family's safety comes first)
Thanks for all the ideas guys and gals, much appreciated!

Question, for any that have looked at my add for the 3, am I priced too high or something? Or just bad time with the economy and all?

there are certified 2005's with half the km for under $7k. IMO you're going to want to have to not keep the 3 for this to be worth your while since you'll probally only net 5.5-6.5k based on what i see on autotrader.

Look I understand, I garage kept my car parked it for the winter etc. do you think it was worth more than other MS3's that had been DD year round and weren't near as clean/good shape?
Nope... people look at averages and they might pick yours over the other because it is cleaner and has less tax but they won't pay more (1-2k) to buy privately vs. going to a dealer which buyers seem to love for some reason

I might get flamed, but I was going to suggest looking into GMs (not j-body). Buick, although marketed as an old-persons car, has some of the highest reliability scores. My family has owned nothing but larger GMs such as Lumina, Regal, Impala (i'm the black sheep of the family), and they have been very solid/reliable cars - not to mention their parts are dirt cheap, and they're remarkably easy to repair.
When I was shopping for the Impala for my parents, there were some 05 around for 5k-ish... i'm sure with this downturn they'd be more inclined to discount.

Starbucks? Can't stand it, never go there.
Sat tv? Nope (FTA, much cheaper)
Basic internet, pay bills with it, keep in touch with family.
I WILL NOT put my family at risk. I thanked you for bringing the poor crash test ratings, as unfortunately that kills the GMs for me that I was conidering.
But, also keep in mind I do ALL my own work. Repairs will cost me parts only, aside from an alignment if necessary. A well maintained car, be it a Hyundai, GM or Toyota, will likely work for many years trouble free.

99-00 honda odyssey, looking at around $5000~
If your children are young and you need to carry things around.
It gets similar gas mileage as your 3 (obviously worst but not a lot)
The power doors are amazing everytime you have to carry things to the car with your hands full.
It drives like a sedan, smooth ride and it can turn fast when you want it to without too much body roll, turning radius is comparable to the 3.
IIRC safety rating was all 5 stars back in in the day.
Extremely reliable, my family had one for 7 years. With minimum maintiance It still drives the way it drove 7 years ago, zero rust on body, zero rattle & cargo capacity no mazdas can match.
I love this van, actually have less complain of it compare to the speed3... hope to keep it around for another 8 years

Okay, with a deposit taken on the 3 (I know, I'm an :AH), I have a week to find a *new* car.... here is the short(er) list, trying to stay under $4000...ish, in no particular order:
Protege
Protege5
Grand Am/Alero (poor side impact ratings on 2 door, 4 door is a different story from what I can find)
Grand Prix (maybe)
Focus (just go with it for now please!!)
Accord
Civic
Impreza
Legacy
Intrigue
Keep in mind I am nearly a mechanic... I do ALL my own work shy of alignments.... so when considering "repair costs", it will only cost me parts.....

Oh and Subaru might be a good one to look at. They have some kind of really small SUV type thing (can't remember the name), my sister got a 2003 when she had her baby, I don't think they cost very much.
Hello Kev. It’s bad to see this crisis got you too. Our car market is different and
even car models have a different names. I can’t help here much.
For this sum the car purchase is more a lottery.
You asked about Volvo. I vote against them. I hadn’t seen aged, reliably working Volvo.
I have two examples before my eyes. One my colleague had two old Volvos whereas
the other colleague has two old Audi A4. Both Volvos are already died. Their last cars were of the same 94 year. Audi A4 is very reliable car.

K, Just looking for a little feedback on possibles...:
99 Accord, 220K : http://kitchener.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-Honda-1999-HONDA-ACCORD-W0QQAdIdZ117070376
04 Grand Am GT1, 160K : http://kitchener.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-Pontiac-2004-Pontiac-Grand-Am-GT-W0QQAdIdZ113541579
03 Grand Am GT1, 160K : http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/details.aspx?vlotid=1174873&adid=7385515
I'm still open to other options... but unfortunately time is not on my side....
not sure if you're sticking to your guns and still saying fuggedaboutit to the 3400 V6 but, if you are, ix-nay on the 2 Grand Ams.
the Accord may have higher mileage, but it's not out of line for a 10 year old car. there's about 30k until the timing belt should be changed again so you're good for another year or 2. the seller must not much of an enthusiast since he spells VTEC "V-teck". see if you can get the VIN and run a CarProof ...for a 99, the body seems pretty darn clean and rust free by the rear fender!
Cliff's Notes: i say accord :)

I like the Cliff Notes...lol
I've done my research into the Grand Ams, and they actually rate the 3400 better in the 03-05 years. Like GM figured out their issues by then. They also got better fuel economy than the 2.4 in the earlier models, not far off the 2.2 that replaced the 2.4. Crash tests are better on the 4 door, rated extremely poor on the 2 door.
The accord, he will go as low as $3900 as is, says he's not going lower because the body is in such good shape. I looked at another one at a dealer with the same k in town here, and the body had so many different crappy repainted panels, I walked away without a test drive...(was asking $3995) http://kitchener.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-Honda-1998-Honda-ACCORD-Vtec-for-Sale-5-Spd-W0QQAdIdZ116750101
Just something about 5 years difference in the cars for $1000.... I keep banging my head trying to head in one direction or the other....

^ Thanks Boostie! My brother has a 03 Sentra SER, fast, but ride like a lumber wagon... And their engines aren't all that reliable. The SpecV might have better seats though, and the better stereo is a plus too.... I think I'll have to look into this one!
Cheers!

Another thing to keep in mind is the SER's backseat is really really really really really really small.

You still looking for a car? I sold a 2000 Olds Alero for just over 2000 a few months ago. You may want to take a look at them. I had some issues with it but nothing too major and you did mention you know your stuff.
Engine/tranny/room/ fuel economoy/comfort/body were excellent. Had about 150,000 on it.
Maybe you want to take a look at those.

My father owns a 99 Accord as well (last time I checked, it was at 270 xxx kms) and he swears by that car. No major problems whatsover and still drives like a champ after all these years ! Pretty roomy too :)

EI finally came through, and I bouht this for a song and a dance really. I have a solid job lead, and am in the process of shifting money around. If all goes well, i can keep this one. If not, you'll see it up on the for sale boards. Lets hope it stays for a while! Pro was quite rusty anyways, little spots everywhere. This one is almost rust free!
Besides, after driving an 04 3 GT 5spd, driving the Pro automagic was lame and dismal... back into 165HP and 5 spd, now complete with AWD!! :chuckle
