Hi guys,

Hoping I could get some help on this...Just got an used Mazda3 2 months ago, love it. Recently, I noticed my left rear wheel squeaks about 50% of the time (JUST that wheel). It's just this annoying high pitched squeak as if you're driving on a rusty wheel...and the faster the wheel spins, the faster the squeak is. I thought it was weird because my break pads are new.

I took it to the shop today and didn't get a clear answer on what the problem is. The bits of information I got from the mechanic were 1) the breaks are not original Mazda but aftermarket. 2) the hand break wire to that wheel is a bit sticky and get stuck at times. 3) the inside break squeaks but goes away when water is sprayed on it. 4) there's no safety issue, it's just an annoying squeak. I was given the suggestion to switch the break pads and the wire, and it will cost $700 + tax, which I thought is crazy talk.

Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

I have an powertrain bronze warranty, which I doubt covers breaks, should I give them a call anyway?

Thanks so much in advance.

Here are some additional details:
-the high pitched noise goes away when I apply the breaks
-the noise increases while I turn left and goes away while I turn right
-WD40 does not help
-the inside of the wheels looks very rusty - the original owner did not invest much in rust protection

I wonder if it's a combination of the pad material and the ebrake. If the cable's sticking it may have the pad just tight enough to put pressure on the rotor to drag, which may squeal like that. And if the pads are aftermarket, they may be noisier than stock. But that should be on both corners...

Other than that, wheel bearing maybe? But a mechanic should have figured that out.
