Both nice looking cars!

Mazda interior rocks, especially the seats.

I had a MS3... I liked the GTI's seats better. More support where needed and holds you in the seat better.
The interior looks better in the GTI. Especially the steering wheel and cluster.

Right now if I had to choose I'd probably go with the GTI. Don't get me wrong the MS3 was a fun car to drive, but just my personal pref. I'd go with the GTI, but I'd have to do some more research and definitely drive 'em both.

I've owned every gen of VWs from the 80's to early 2001 and have to say VWs are great (apart from the electrical quirks), but the MS3 gets my vote purely based on horsepower and reliability.

The GTI is euro hot but I could never own a VW due to their reliability issues.

MS3 is the one I would want to drive daily.

I wonder if there are many issues with the current GTI... Haven't really heard much.

My golf was a piece of trash. I was probably just unlucky, but problems kept popping up left right and center (especially electrical).
