View Full Version : why do mods close threads

Its kind of frustrating that everytime someones decides to open a new thread and there was a similar years ago the mods decide to close those threads. I seen it many times . Someone just created a threat about where everyone else was from , it was going well and then they decide to close it because there was a similar who knows when !!!
Keep the forum alive ... not many people are posting lately and when someone decides to bring something new and people start responding , they have to close it . ..
Its ok to post links from old threads that were similar but keep them as reference and let new ones come once in a while... just my 2 cents..

there's nothing really wrong with reviving an old thread if you have a true purpose for doing so.
reviving old threads for the sake of post counts is generally what's frowned upon.

the problem is that most people just stop responding to the same topic after the thread was closed.
I havent seen many people following old threads when the mods decide to survived them. I thinks its ok to start new threads once in a while even though at some point in the past someone already had a similar one. I can understand if two threads open the same months have the same topic then why not just make one ....

Yeah true. But I have seen that happen a couple of times... and sometimes it's just annoying to re-read 40 posts from years ago. Just sayyyyin! :)

I see where your coming from , but like myself, we are lazy... most of us do use the search button for DIY and other common questions. But general interest, videos, simple post most do not serach for or go pages and pages back to find. Rather just stick to what's new and what's "hawt" lol , just my opinion , I know others will vary. I do find myself starting at the last page for members rides and going through them all (kills time at work :) )

I think that the problem is that people aren't using the search function to look for things. If it isn't on the first page of the section that they are looking in they assume it doesn't exist, and start a new thread. Some things are so old and haven't been updated in such a long time that they are completely buried 5,6, 10 pages deep! sometimes even if you search for it if your wording isn't exactly right it might not catch certain similar threads. Take the blue jays thread that was brought back from the dead, I think before people started posting to it lately ( last 3 weeks or so) it hadn't been touched in close to 2 years!
So the lesson is:
use the search function first! (someone worked hard to program that)
no luck then start new thread!

Take a look at some of the stuff that was brought up in this thread. (Yes, it's locked too.) It pretty much talks about the same stuff that was raised here and explains why.

It's funny, cause I could bring up a few other threads that talk about this too. It seems as though this question gets asked quite often. Not as often as "when to take off your summers", but often enough. Go over that thread. Already, it's just becoming a repetition of what was already said.
History tends to repeat itself, especially when it comes to certain threads on this forum. (Sometimes practically even word for word.)
Not all old info is useless. Some of it still applies.
In regards to the search function, believe it or not, when I don't remember certain topics, I sometimes DO go through 500+ pages of threads just to answer questions for people. (Yes, it's sad, I know.:bang:loco:whoa:rant)
This is probably a HORRIBLE analogy, but to me, it's kind of like school. Whether or not you were there from the first day of class or if you were admitted after the Christmas holidays, you can't just expect the teacher to give you all the answers on the test. You have to do some learning on your own, so that you can get that A++. Help is there if you need it, but it's mainly individual effort.
Yes, the search function may not be perfect, but we also have tags now, and there is a "search tag cloud" at the bottom of the advanced search screen. You can also search by relevancy, date, username, etc. All these things were added to make it easier for people to find what they are looking for. And don't forget, you can also search within subforums, etc, to help to cut down on the number of threads/pages you look through. (I haven't used them myself, but I am sure they do the job.)
This is what I am talking about:

As I will restate from the thread linked above, think about it this way: If you are looking for something (information or not), would you rather find pieces of it scattered all over the place and have to stitch it back together, or would you rather find everything in the same place? The more threads people start, the more places you and I are going to have to search/look for the answers to our questions.

if everyone did that then there would not be any new threads. If you want to keep the forum alive and people coming here to post then new threads have to be created. Just like new members come and old members leave.
Some people dont want to open a thread that already has 100 post , i for one dont want to read 100 post before i can open a new thread...
i can agree that certain threads are very repetitive and maybe the mods could close them and keep one open. But to close every thread that someone finds someone similar was posted years ago its just insane...

plus the search option does not even work that well because it gives you like 30 threads that have the word you search for , you have to look into each one to see if matches what you are asking....

Exactly... if 3 people posted the exact same thing in the last 2 weeks then it'd be okay to POLITELY point them in the right direction. Like MGM does so well!!! hahah But to point them to one from soooooo long ago, I don't want to read it cuz it's all old info, for the most part.

question - if we merge the current conversation into the old thread, and then asked you continue the conversation, would that be a fair compromise?

whats the point in closing a thread? ... is there a limit on how many threads can be open? ... if there was a old thread with the same info.. and somoene started a new one 2 years later .... whats the diff if we keep the new one open?
unless theres a space issue on the website or somethin for the number of threads allowed .. it doesnt make sense to me either....

Well...
Group buy threads should probably be closed when the GB is done... otherwise people keep trying to join it long after it is over. Ditto for "For Sale" threads.

i get what you are saying but a lot of people dont have the time you have . If everyone just use the search button to get answer there would not be a online community , there would not a mazda forum. I may as well just use google and search what i m looking for.
All i m saying is sometimes people just want to start new threads and see who can help , if you have the time to look for it in the search function (which can be hard sometimes ) great you are contributing to help SOMEONE ELSE. The whole point of having a forum is for OTHERS to help you find or asnwer whatever is you are having a problem with.
A lot of the question i ve ask here i could probably just find in google but its nice to hear from other members , its nice to start a fresh topic once in a while. It keeps more members coming .
It is also helpful when someones post a link on an old thread that relates to the same topic , but why not just keep the old thread as a reference for someone that wants to go through pages and pages of information . Sometimes people just want a simple answer...or they just wants to start fresh ...
I m just bringing that becuase someone opened a thread about where everyone else was from and they closed it . I m sure there are new members here and why not just keep the new thread where new members can introduce themselves

In a nut shell, threads are closed on a case by case scenario.
If you have an issue in terms of one of your threads being closed, which you believe should not have been or need clarification on why it was, feel free to PM one of the moderators.
I'll admit, I've had threads close on me in the past.... most of the time they were justified; some were re- opended after discussing.
Overall, the moderators are here to keep this forum in line and to make sure things do not get out of hand.

The problem with the internet is, there's so much information but little logical and sane way to organize it. By keeping information concise and organized and brief, there's less wading through and reading through mounds of information.
If left unchecked, there would be 5324587 threads about "Which CAI to buy?" or "How do I get more HP?"
Do we really need 5879835 threads about which CAI to buy? I guarentee 343678 of those threads will say brand A and 343625 will say brand B and 23456 say brand A and B aren't bad and cause CEL but brand X is awesome.
just a thought.
