View Full Version : CF Hoods
Hey guys,
Anyone here running with a CF hood?
I had a couple questions: How does CF stand up to stone chips / dents? I've noticed that the factory paint sucks and I know CF is 'unpainted', so I was curious what it looks like after taking a direct hit from a stone at hwy speeds? How is fitment? Do I have to use pins or can I use the stock hood release? Lastly, I heard with so much power to the front wheels that it's generally not a good idea to reduce the hood weight... I know that there is truth to this, in theory, but anyone have any first hand / real world experience? Is it a big deal?
I'm on the fence regarding a CF hood... I went with a darker color car this time in case I decided to do it, but I don't want to make my car look too flashy. Only reason I'm thinking about it is because I have a nasty stone chip on the front of the car (I should have put on a clear bra asap) and wondering if I should fix it + clear bra next year or CF hood....

a CF hood is on the way and I think the guys on the GB will be the first ones to get a CDN-made CF hood with all the OEM bracing/support (so it's not just a flappy piece of resin). wait a bit and you should get a chance to chk them out.
with regards to front-end weight vs. high-power FWD...the only issue here is traction...if you can find enough traction on the front tires, it wouldn't matter if you have NO hood...the problem you're speaking of is 2-fold: 1. the MS3 has poor front traction, and 2. having less weight up front decreases whatever little traction we have.
the solution: 1. engine mounts and traction bars, and then 2. will become a non-issue.
having another 60lbs upfront for the sake of traction is 2-steps backwards, I think, but if one were to leave everything stock, then yes, having more weight up front, will TEND to give you more frontend traction/grip.
I almost got in on that GB a while ago... Really looking forward to seeing the results. When is the delivery date? My only remaining thing is going to be how it holds up to stone chips... I guess I can always clear bra the front of the car after throwing on the CF hood.
I like your traction solution... I'm definitely doing the engine mounts either way. I didn't know (or at least, didn't look in to..) they made traction bars for our cars. Who makes them?

Keep in mind that CF has a tendency to expand and shrink slightly with heat, which is especially noticable during our summers. A clear bra would not work well with them in most instances.
[EDIT] for correct season :)

hahaha funny to talk about this. the GB pricing wont be available to you but im supposed to get the first one made in the next couple weeks. So then we will be able to review and what not. I am getting one because of my chipped out front end. CF will not dent and chips will be on clear coat (buff it out and clear coat it again) is what I am aiming for :)

PTP and Medieval both offer traction bars. The Medieval set has an offset kink in it to allow for wider wheels. They're on the TDL, but since I've done a bunch of handling mods last season, the traction bars are on the back-buner until I have enough power to deem them necessary.
Trust me...I'm anxious on seeing the guys' CF hoods when they are ready as well.

clear bra expends too (not much but still)

True, just keep it in mind.
I'm interested to see the results too of the CF hood.
In general, they tend to be great, or really shitty.
hah nice! I guess I'm not the only one frustrated with this! Things are looking up. :)
Let us know as soon as you review it =)
Pat: Thanks for that, I didn't know about that at all! Good bit of info...
BTW anyone get their CF hoods yet?
