View Full Version : Weird rattle
Anyone else get a weird rattle noise when turning off their car? I can't pin point where it is coming from, but it sounds like something is loose. It was there before I physically started modifying the car. It only happens when turning the car off.

haven't a clue myself but I know how it can be annoying...good luck!

I get the same thing as well. Sounds like it's coming from the engine for sure though.
I noticed it more just now when turning off the engine without the interior fan running.
Could it be a loss of oil pressure happening before the engine stops fully turning?
Interesting... Haven't thought of that. I might get my girl to turn the car off while I pop my head in the engine bay... I always assumed it was some heat shield or some other loose item, didn't think about the engine.
I must say, this engine is awfully loud... They like to tick, which is surprising for a new engine (My girl's 07 Sedan has the same tick, so I know it isn't just me lol)

the ticking is likely from the High Pressure Fuel Pump...it's loud enough to drown out engine noise at the track.

try keeping the clutch engaged when turning it off
INTERESTING... I don't always get this rattle, I'm betting it's because of the clutch being engaged! Great suggestion... I'll give it a try tonight.
Does the FP generate noise up front by the engine? IE: Is it injector noise from the high pressure or FP noise? I've def heard some weird sounds up in the engine bay when the car is parked against something that can reflect/amplify the noise. Never had a DI engine before though.

The HPFP is cam driven and is right between the battery and thge engine itself...it's usually not too loud at idle, but you can definitely discern it. silvermist99 says he can hear the injectors too, but I'm sure our intake and inlet drowns that out at higher RPM anyway.
I'm actually very interested in this and will observe this over the next couple of days...I'm the type of guy that listens to the car all the time, with the radio off and windows both closed and open...you can usually tell if your car is running well by what you hear...keep us posted!
Hahah, I thought I was the only anal person on these forms =) I do that too, at least once a day before going back to my music. I'll post an update tonight.
Okay, tested this out tonight.... I held the clutch in while turning off the car and big difference! I can still hear something spin/move around.... Which I'm guessing is the balance shaft! But the rattle that usually follows didn't occur!
Can anyone else hear what I'm guessing is the BS spin down? How does that work anyway, is the balance shaft simply a weight that attachs to the shaft? (BTW Fobio, I saw your BS in the oil pan at Jimmy's :) That sucker is heavy!)
