Does anyone (sas) know if our ecu's are plug and play? I.e., can I buy an ECU from any year; or 2.0 / 2.3 L; plug it in and drive away?

Can't answer your question but I believe the gauge cluster/keys are matched pairs and dealer would be required to reprogram at the very least to a new ECU.

I saw you question, I’m a bit busy in last time.
Look here.
http://www.car-part.com/
Choose year, model, part (Engine computer).
Then you can see all possible versions of PCM for this year.
Number like ID L39S18881A is the version of PCM.
I think there are very small chances to replace one version by another without CEL,
Versions before and after 2007 are not interchangeable and there is a big difference for tranny type, engine volume and emmission standard.

If PCM wasn’t programmed to prohibit the synchronization by two carry code keys, you may to do it without dealer.
As I understand PCM and Control panel has its own inner number which can’t be been read.
By this number is coded their shared pass number. Father, by this pass is coded their handshake session.
PCM and Control Panel have function to calculate this coded password but if this function is disabled, this password can’t be calculated without manufacturer. I’m not a Mazda tech, it’s just my thoughts based on logic.

I know at Toyota all it is, is plug and play. they just have to input the vin with techstream and off you go. not really sure if it applies to mazda

dont do it --- it's a nightmare ... keys, cluster go with ecu... power steering, airbag control unit and sensors alll different for every fakin different model ... gets even more weirder when you compare federal emm models, and california standard models. Wiring is different for all cars, --- so DOn't do it--- get the right model... But you will need your keys programmed again.
