License Plate?

Does it have to be in the center on the front? i just read somewhere where someone got a ticker for not having it in the center (front plate) is that possible?

If it were illegal I don't think Mitsubishi would be placing the plates on their Lancers off to the side.

you definitely need two plates front and back in ontario. i've seen people have the front plate on top of the dash and not get ticketed, as long as it is displayed somewhere up front!

As long as there is a plate on the front of the vehicle that is clearly visible when facing the vehicle and it is not obstructed (which includes license plate covers, like our TM3 ones), you are fine. See Section HTA, section 13, subsections 2 and 3.

13. (1) No number other than that upon the number plate furnished by the Ministry shall be exposed on any part of a motor vehicle or trailer in such a position or manner as to confuse the identity of the number plate. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 13 (1).

Number plate to be kept clean

(2) Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried. 1994, c. 27, s. 138 (7).

Putting it on your dashboard is a violation of two offences. See above, and now below.

73. (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle upon a highway,

(a) with any sign, poster or other non-transparent material or object placed on the windshield or on any window of such motor vehicle; or

(b) with any object placed in, hung on or attached to the motor vehicle,

in a manner that will obstruct the driver’s view of the highway or any intersecting highway. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 73 (1).

Yeah if you find a proper place for the plate on the dash like i did it does not obstruct your view so it can be negotiated. I have been pulled over for a ticket and once the officer saw my plate on the dash he dropped the negotiation. So i got lucky?

In all honesty, if comes down to the cop. If you're a good guy, have no prior issues with the police, and seem understanding, you most likely won't be bothered too much. But I can gaurentee you, if the driver gets lippy, or has a previous history, someone in the same situation that you were in would most likely get a ticket.

Ultimately though, they look at the plate on the dash board as more of a safety hazard, then they look at the visibility issue. Anything on your dashboard will become a projectile in a collision. A license plate becomes a thin piece of metal with the potential to decapitate the occupants of the vehicle. Espcially for those who just sit it on the dashboard with no means of securing it. Technically though, the windshield is an obstruction of the plate, as it can no longer be seen as clearly due to several factors, glare being one of them.

I personally am not a fan of front license plates as they are ugly, but it's not work risking fines for a fashion statement IMO. The only thing I find them good for is keeping my bumper clean when dumbasses bump the front of my car... the plate takes the hit.

i have seen them mounted on the sun visor inside the front windshield...
IMO the best way to mount your plate is with a tow hook bracket...looks clean and you dont have to drill new holes or worry about tickets...
plus its really easy to remove if your showing off your car...
i'd get one but i need to figure out how im gonna cover up those nasty holes in the centre of my bumper first....:chuckle

Having your plate on the dash means some serious trouble if you get in a head on. Think about it.

i was talkign to a buddy of mine.... having your plate on your dash is likely to get you pulled over (which means its an offence)... ticketing would come down to officer's discretion... other than a safety issue, its also for enforcement purposes... its hard to read the plate in areas other your front bumper... also people can use it to get around the traffic cameras (you have to tweak your rear plate for that)... its being done by motorcycle riders a lot

picture your license plate flying into your head at 100km/h or your head flying into the plate. It can happen if you crash on the highway.

are there any aftermarket plate mounts, I would like to mount mine off to the side when I get it but also want it pleasing to the eyes.
