Hey gang,

I'm trying to match my calipers with these metallic red lug nuts I've got on my car. In another thread, I'm looking for someone who can color match high temperature paint in spray can form... I'm also debating getting my calipers powder coated.

Has anyone looked into this? How crazy is this idea? I'm curious about cost, length of time (I'm obviously gonna have to park my car for a few days... In gear...) and how it turned out. Any issues with doing this? (Can anything inside the caliper be damaged, IE: Seals, etc?)

Also, I wouldn't mind a one stop place, where I can just leave my car there and have them do their thing lol.... But I'm not opposed to removing my calipers myself and driving them over... (In another car...)

Yeah!!! Power Coating your calipers is the way to go! It will last much much longer. Take a look at our sponsor Quy's PowerCoating, he will do a set of for for $140 or so. I don't remember the price exactly. I was talking to him a few days ago and he showed me a sample of 4 power coated calipers and told me the benefits.

Highly recommended!

what made you want to powder coat rather than paint them?

If you want decals on them - just get Quy to power coat em, then you stick the decals on yourself and add a coat of clear over it. Should not come off.

Due to the high heat of the power coating process, he can't add decals as it will completely melt.

lol gonna have your car on 4 jacks for the day. I hope all the fittings stay intact. Let me know how it goes.

not exactly true.... some guys in the states are getting quite good with powder coating designs using decals

Yeah, but I bet these guys specialize in just rims right? Not sure.

I know Quy's doesn't do Rims only, infact he does Powercoating on so many things that he hasn't really ventured into these techniques.

I thought the decals were stickers? Or are you talking about a powercoat with a template over the caliper for the decal?

Reason I thought about doing it was because a) Yeah it lasts longer, b) I'm thinking I'll have an easier time color matching with powder coating than finding someone who will mix paint in spray can form... c) I'm planning on tracking my car and powder coating will probably hold up better to hot calipers.

mleblond is right tho, my car will be on jack stands for if I'm LUCKY a day... I can handle a day, if it's just that long... I'm worried about stuff getting damaged though. Has anyone actually done this? Or more importantly, has Quy done calipers before? :) (I know Phillie86 mentioned some pics?)

I'll give Quy a call tomorrow and see what he thinks.

not really worth the $$$ outlay, but you could always buy the MS3 brake set and PC them instead of doing your own off your car. wasn't there a guy selling them on here?

i'm interested also in powdercoating rather than having to paint and re paint every season or two. If its only $140 for the set...that is the price of getting calipers painted 2x. I'm sure the powdercoat will last way longer than that.

only problem is, i am in no way capable to removing my own calipers and would rather drive to quys place and leave the car there and have them do that whole thing. BUt not sure if they know how or if its safe as they aren't mechanics.

you guys give too much credit to Quy...lol...tho you guys may convince him to have a part time mechanic on hand...

Quy's shop will not take your calipers off and put them back on...best to do this when you get a rental for the wknd or something to go a road trip. However, some enterprising and skillfull members may be able to offer some mobile mechanic service to do it...note that you HAVE TO MAKE SURE you get Quy to mask the parts that should be done...like bolts holes, etc...

Good luck guys! Quy will love to work on these I'm sure!

EDIT: Caliper ad, fronts only tho - http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=32618

Yeah I kept thinking about that as well, but I can't justify spending that much money on something I already have lol. Plus mine seem to be in way better condition than the ones in that picture.

I just don't like the idea of having to take my calipers off or having my car on blocks for a bit lol. Removing the calipers is easy, it's just I never had to bleed the brake lines before and I'm worried about not having things "perfect" like they are now...

get a brake bleeder...if you get one, you'll have 3 - 4 guys helping you out.

Good idea on the brake bleeder.. Man I think I'm actually going to go through with this. ;) I wonder if I can just throw on special speed bleeder valves and be done with it...

Krisekca: No way, someone polished their calipers?? Have any pics? lol

at the track, I saw a race team use a custom made one with just a squeeze bottle, a tube and a nut/bolt to attach to the caliper fluid valve...I know nothing about this, but may find out more this season.

That's bad ass... If you could find out more, please share your findings. :)

I've got to clear out two other cars before I can dream of having my MS3 up on blocks in my garage.. I'm pulling all the parts from my Probe to sell the car nearly stock and it's taking longer than I expected lol (Or rather, I'm putting in less time than I hoped...)

I imagine I'll do my calipers sometime this summer... If I can wait that long. ;)
