Anybody have an opinion on the Saikou Michi oil catch cans? I've been looking around for the "right" one and most of the mazdaspeed, evo, skyline guys seems to think highly of this brand.

Pretty pricey (reg. $95 for their "Stage 2" unit) but when I email Saikou Michi, they said they would let me get in on a current group buy going on for $75 for the Stage 2. Shipping to Canada would be $20 but they were ok with declaring at a lower value to avoid customs (we'll see if that works...not too optimistic). Saikou Stage 2 looks good to me cuz it has a baffle plus it has 5/8 barbs which matches our PCV system.

http://www.saikoumichi.com/Stage2OCC.htm

...I think I will go for it.

$95 USD shipped? not bad...

Yup, that's the price. Still kinda high for a metal can...but I feel more comfortable with a quality product on my car as opposed to the $25 catch cans on ebay (not trying to knock anyone).

I guess $95 usd is a small price to pay for some piece of mind. I'm hoping all the talk of higher octane and better fuel economy due to catch cans is also true (but I'm not hold my breath).

i went with elite engineering,
there was a toss up between this one and elite engineering, saikou took over 2 weeks to get back to me so that i could buy it, after the first week i went with elite engineering.
i really wanted to go with saikou but when they took to long to get back to me i gave up on them.

Saikou was pretty responsive for me. They stuck to their 24 hrs response time which they state on their site. He also answered all my general catch can questions which was cool.

Thats a very nice unit! I looked at that one as well but I wasn't if it was available in 5/8" connections. Being able to screw off the can on the Elite Engineering one and clean the gunk is a nice feature. It also looks like a high quality product...I guess it should be for that price though (same for saikou i hope).

Does anyone happen to know how clean a sealed catch can? I'm guessing it involves flushing it with some type of product but I don't know what.

Hey Storm,

Notice that you have a 35% tint...do you have more pictures of your car somewhere (in good lighting)? I'm interested in a tint...actually I got a 50% tint on friday but they f'd it up (wrinkles, bubbles, and damaged tint everywhere) so I'm making them re-do it.

I may ask to switch to a 35% tint. 50% is not bad for my taste but I'd like to consider 35%..just scared it will be too dark for me.

This CC looks much better than the one I'm currently buying lol. + it already has a baffle and is the color I'd like to paint the one I'm ordering... Any chance I can get in on this BB as well? Sucks that you can't just open this up to empty it out, I guess you have to flush it out... Maybe compressed air? ;) What's the elite one like?

Anyone want to buy my other CC? lol

Edit: Doesn't look too hard to drain...

I didn't know you could get 50% tints... I think that's way to light IMO... 35% is a good starting point. :) I went with 17% charcoal all around.. It takes some getting used to at night. Sometimes I roll my windows down when backing up, just to make sure I don't hit a curb or anything... But that's only when there isn't any street lamps in the area.

I don't suggest anything that dark if you already get bothered by the police. :)

lol...you guys...we need a MS3 meet so our CC discussions don't turn into a general tint talk...but, I've got something in the 20% and it's just dark enough for me...my tinter "did not allow" me to get anything darker...

I'd like a Saikou can too, but sourcing them wasn't easy (guess I should've chk'd the Subaru/EVO boards to see if they have a GB going)...if someone will throw a GB together, I may grab one too but $95 USD shipped for something I can't see even if I open my hood is pricey for me...

The Megan one cj and I are getting is a GReddy rip off...it doesn't have the screen or baffling material, but that can be easily taken cared of @ the Home Depot...

With regards to the Saikou can, you don't ned to pressurize it to drain it...chk out this guys install walk-thru with a Saikou and the Mazda OEM PCV:

i believe that the Saikou comes with (just the can) no bracket to mount it,no hoses. With the Elite it comes with mounting bracket and hose, but i'm not going to use their hose too small, i'm going to be using napa's pcv valve and not the oem.

i did find some high pressure fuel lines
https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productselection.asp?Product=3290

it might be better if a bunch of us do one big order to save on shipping. it will probably work better then the heater hoses that the other guys are doing.

man...wish this came along 2 weeks ago! I bought the heater hose, as it's the only one I could find at Parts Source, and Jimmy said it's no good...have to find proper fuel lines as you've posted. Parts Source pointed me to BF Trucks in Markham...will call them Tuesday.

With your link, I'd say each of us would need 6'...at least around $40 of hosing each? Any CDN/local source?

The frickin' heater hose was $12...but it's useless regardless now...

go to home depot and get some plumbing adaptors (i converted mine into 5/8" inlet)
will post pictures of it (when i find my plumbing tape)

uoftguy
05-17-2009, 03:41 PM
Yeah I'm not too sure what kind of hose to use either...Canadian tire has bulk hose for like $2/ft for 5/8" fuel hose...is any fuel hose good enough or does if have to be special?

Also, where do you find the brass fittings to convert the PCV (Fram FV277) threaded male end to a 5/8" barbed end???

You need a 1/4" to 1/2" bushing, 1/2 to 1/2 coupler, and 1/2 male threaded to 5/8" barbed brass fittings...I have no clue where to get these. The typical auto/hardware store doesn't have this stuff. Was hoping to find it in the plumbing section of home depot but no luck.

No worries about thread jacking...I kinda did it to myself - started with OCC's then asked storm about his tint, LOL.

uoftguy
05-17-2009, 03:45 PM
One more thing to add:

If you look at this Jegs oil separator http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/52205/10002/-1

...they have universal type fuel lines as a recommended accessory at the bottom of the page which makes me think its ok to use. Not sure we need to get the crazy expensive type hose.

home depot has the connectors, give me some time and i'll post what i did with the connectors,

pcv valve to a 5/8" barb and i've also converted the inlet barb to a 5/8" barb too. looks a little big but i will only have to use one type of hose then.

That'd be great. My only other option is to buy from a site i found https://www.rittenhouse.ca which will cost me $20 for the 3 fittings i need...which is kinda high for just 3 brass fittings.

first the pcv valve
http://i312.photobucket.com/albums/ll333/stormin84/Mazdaspeed%203/IMG_0895.jpg

parts you are going to need is the pcv valve (mine is the napa one)

5/8” barb x 1/2” MIP
1/2” FIP x 1/4" FIP
pcv valve

Now for the adaptor (converting the inlets on the OCC to 5/8" barb)

http://i312.photobucket.com/albums/ll333/stormin84/Mazdaspeed%203/IMG_0893.jpg
http://i312.photobucket.com/albums/ll333/stormin84/Mazdaspeed%203/IMG_0894.jpg

5/8” Barb x 1/2” MIP
1/2” FIP x 1/4” FIP
1/4” FIP x 1/4” MIP 90 degree elbow
1/4” MIP x 1/8” FIP
1/8” MIP x close

you are going to need 2 of each if you want both inlets the same
There is probably an easier way to do this but i don't care :chuckle.
hope this helps you out.

I've found a place with a preliminary price:

DTC Industrial Sales
50 Ironside Cres , Scarborough, ON, M1X1G4

5/8 ID braided fuel lines - $5.58/foot

I'm asking for better pricing if we grab 30 - 40 feet of it...I'll call back later again to confirm bulk pricing with the "boss". What do you guys think?

I've left msg's with another couple of places in Toronto. Will update you with those as well when I get them.

Roth Industrial Sales Limited
Phone: (416) 298-2333
225 Nugget Ave
Scarborough, ON, M1S3L2

$3.50/foot or $175 for a 50' coil. Guy on the phone said: "These are good for oil, water, whatever." They are "vacuum resistant" or what he terms as having a "vacuum rating". Seems to be the best deal for us.

dude, I have no problem hooking you up =)

I'm just waiting to see if I'll hear back from one more place. Both hoses are all rubber...you might need a pair of heavy duty cutters/scissors, but that's it. regular hose clamps are fine.

I was able to find them at Rona. But I think HD by my work had them too...just the one by my house sucked!

Now I just need to find the hose...this braided hose stuff sounds good. Was also tempted to try 5/8 hydraulic hose (about $3.5/ft as well).

Anyway, I'm hoping I can get in on this braided hose deal.

Thanks alot! If you guys end up ordering, count me in on this hose.

Also, I'm not totally positive about the hydraulic hose...have to look more into the properties of hydraulic fluid (unless someone on the thread already knows more) but i think its petrolium based. Temp ratings are also good for hydraulic hose. We'll see.

Fobio: Been a little busy lately, haven't been following the threads... Plz keep me in mind for any fuel lines. :) How much do we need, like 6-10 ft?

Wasn't the first place (The $5.XX/ft) using braided steel lines? I guess we don't really need them to be metal.. plus it would be a pain in the ass to clamp...

Fobio

Patience pays off...

I talked to the bossman at DTC and instead of using something that would be overkill, he suggested the very same hose that comes with some catch-cans...I hope you guys will be able to deal with this tho, as he reccomends that clear urethane hose w/ polywire that can operate under 90 psi of vacuum. This will not be the "sleeper" type heater hose, but you can always find that soft insulating hose to cover this if you're concerned about dealer visits...the kicker:

$0.95/foot for 50+ feet

So here we have:

5/8" braided fuel lines - $5.58/foot
5/8" hydraulic lines - $3.50/foot
5/8" clear polywire hose - $0.95/foot

I'm going by their shop after work to grab a sample of the clear stuff...he'll likely have to order it tho...so I'll have time-frames by tmr...lemme know what you guys think of the options.

these 2 are the only ones that i found so far
GPE-063-250 5/8"x250PSI EPDM GEN PURPOSE $1.80 FT

seems good but will the (oil and crap going to the catch can) eat thru it

AUTO-063 5/8" AUTO HEATER $1.24 FT

i don't think this is gonna work, too soft and didn't jimmy tell you Fobio that this type of hose won't work.

right now i'm liking the hydaulic hoses seem to be vaccuum rated and it seems that oil will be able to pass thru it without destroying it.

i my opinion i would pay a little extra and install it once, rather then going cheap and finding out that it broke/ couldn't hold up and half to redo everything again. imagine this happening in the winter.

Yeah, I'm thinking hydraulic hose too...will have to take a look at it when i get a chance on the weekend. Minimum bend radius on the 5/8 is 200mm (8") so you may need a barbed elbow fitting to turn down off the intake manifold nipple...not sure if there's enough room to properly curve the hose.

Also need to make sure it can be clamped like rubber hose I guess. I live in Winnipeg so this stuff better stand up to -40C !

so I've spoken with Brad of DTC again last night, and he's concerned about the vacuum rating of the hydraulic hose...worried that it'll collapse...I need input on this.

update on the hose.

so I've spoken with Brad of DTC again last night, and he's concerned about the vacuum rating of the hydraulic hose...worried that it'll collapse...I need input on this.

Hey guys, I think I may source out some hydraulic hose here in Winnipeg. No sense in troubling one of you to ship if it can be found out here. Hydraulic hose is pretty common I would assume.

Thanks anyway.

Bought some 5/8" hydraulic hose on the weekend. $3.50/ft at Princess Auto. Don't think there is any need to worry about vacuum...you can stand on this stuff without compressing in. Its pretty heavy duty. I think it will work just fine.

As I mentioned before, it doesn't bend well so any tight turns will require a barbed elbow fitting.

Can't wait for my catch can to get here! :bana2

Thanks for the heads up uoftguy.

I have the day off today and I'll go pick-up the hose. I'm confirming a price with DTC, wiating for a call back. if it's less than $3.50/foot, I'll grab 50 ft and hold it for stormin, cj, mleblond, myself...

if it's more than $3.50 as per Princess Auto, I'll post up as well, and then it's every man for himself.

Ok guys. I took the liberty of grabbing the hose @ $3/foot plus taxes. I only got 50 ft. Lemme what you need and how to pick up. If you need something mailed lemme know. I also got fittings to turn the megan can to 5/8". Will post a separate thread.

I'm at Hurontario and Eglinton Ave area... I can also meet up somewhere that's closer to you. I usually travel out east on weekends to visit the inlaws. I can hold onto Stormin's lines as well if he's cool with it.

Thank you Fobio and the others for sourcing a suitable hose for the Saikou-Michi OCC. I purchased a OCC a few days ago and was looking for a local source for hose and came upon this thread. You guys saved me a lot of time. Thanks!

I drive a MS6 so I don't really belong here but I felt it was important to say hi and thanks.

I originally started this thread to ask for everyones opinion on the Saikou catch can and its turned into a very useful thread for other things as well.

Just thought I'd update everyone on what I decided. I did order the Saikou can, Stage 2...placed an order on the 18th of may, they shipped out on the 26th of may and I got it on Tuesday of this week (June 2nd). Process was pretty smooth. They answered my questions before I placed the order and they were responsive even after I placed the order (i.e. after they had my money in hand!).

I paid 95 usd including shipping ($113 CAD total) and I did not get taxed or charged with brokerage or duty when it came over the border. Overall, very good experience and the quality of the product (material, paint, welds, fittings, brackets) feels high quality.

In summary, I was very pleased with the experience. Cant wait to install it.

the install was a b*tch do to, i'm glad i have small hands. i just checked tonight and i think i have a little more then a couple of drops (got about half of one of those small dixie cups) and that's from a saturday install. Gonna check it again on the weekend to see how much more is in there, looks like i'm gonna be checking it a lot more then you.
