My friend just bought a Hyndai Genesis, and this weekend he did a cheap but very satisyfying mod on his car. He removed the intake silencer. It sounds amazing now. I was wondering if there is any sort of mod like this for the Speed 3 as i would really like to do it. I know most people will say just go buy an intake, but right now I dont really have money to be spending on stuff like that. I tried searching the fourm but could not find anything.

Just get a blow-off valve.

are you talking about the n/a genesis? intakes/airbox removal on turboed cars don't make as big of a noise difference as n/a cars.

Just get a blow-off valve.

I can buy a CAI for the same price as a blow off valve. Then I would actually have some HP gains. Im trying not to spend money though.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by n/a, but its the 4 cylinder turbo he has. The sound is night and day from haveing the silencer in though.

My Mustang used to have one. It was a huge snorkel silencer inside the right fender to keep intake noise down. Once removed it made a nice difference with sound and a slight increase in response too.

The Speed3 doesn't really have this. Inside the stock air box is quite restrictive but no silencer as I remember.

Get an intake. Engine sounds great with it + power increase.

Thanks! I think I'm just gonna suck it up and buy an intake. Im just worried about getting CEL's though as I asked my dealership if I put an intake will it void my warranty. They said it will. Which really sux cause I have an extended warranty.

Get a mazdaspeed intake and your warranty will be good. I'm not sure if there is a mazdaspeed one for the MS3 tho...

Punch a hole in you muffler and you'll get noise.

They do make one. Or at least used to anyways. I actually wanted to originally get that for warranty reasons but mazda told me they discontinued it becuase so many cars were getting CEL. :(

i think the reason they are getting CEL's especially for the mazdaspeed CAI is because the MAF sensor goes pretty quickly on them...i only know this because it happened to me after about 50k though. I know they still sell them and if you're worried about your warranty being voided just get mazda to install it...i know they're expensive with labor costs and all but atleast if you get a CEL they'll take care of it for you.

I bought a used Mazdaspeed CAI for warranty reasons. I haven't had a CEL yet, though I think getting the AEM air straightener is the reason. I think it is a must with this set up.

I originally wanted them to instal it for that reason. They told me they still could not warranty something if caused by it. I'm starting to think its just my dealership now. :(

I went and checked out the AEM air straightener. This looks like the solution. It says only to be used wth the Mazdaspeed intake system. Just wondering if you buy the AEM intake could this be used as well, or would you not need it then?

If I'm not mistaken MK you can dissassemble part of the stock Mazda3 airbox. It has an airbox portion and then a silencer portion. It will have the same effect as your friend had but probably not as satisfying on our smaller engine. Give it a shot its easy to do. Open your hood and wheel well and start taking out the airbox. You will definitly see the silencer in the wheel well. It could work well too if you throw in a K&N.

n/a = natural aspirated engine

ie non turbo

If you do get a CEL it'lll be just the one. I haven't thrown a CEL since owning my cobb, they are quality intakes.

I installed a COBB this spring too. 2k on the car since the intake was installed and no CEL yet. The COBB has some sort of grid or air straightener right after the filter so I'm hoping CEL's wont be an issue.

Sound is pretty amazing after you install it. The bypass valve is heard clearly but not so loud that it's annoying. As far as power goes, I'm sure its as good as any intake but the gains are not really anything that you'll notice that much. I'm just being honest...intakes in general probably dont do much unless you pair it up with other mods. COBB dynos show 11 hp i think??

If I get a CEL, I'll just clear it myself and if it comes back well then I'll throw my stock intake back on and head to the dealer! lol!

I added a Cosmo Racing Short Ram intake and it sounds great with my MazdaSpeed exhaust as well.

That was only about $132.00 taxes in and shipping in. Might be cheaper because the Canadian dollar has gone up about 7 cents since I ordered mine.

Check it out at Cosmoracing.com.

No CEL's so far and I did the install myself.

I kept the stock box so I can swap it if any issues come up.

Parts person at dealer told me they will be selling the CAI's again soon for the MS3. They needed a different wiring harness ... that is why they were discontinued for a short time.
