I just ordered the cruise control switches for the steering wheel on ebay for a grand total including shipping of $36 CDN.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150348950157
Says it's from a 2006 but will work with 2004-2008. I have a 2007 and I know the part number changed for 2007 and on, but I'm hoping the part will still work.
Can anyone confirm this for me if they've done it on their 2007?

does it come with a brake sensor?

I don't think so. I will likely just pick that up at the dealer (only $6 I hear). All told, if this part works with my 2007, this will mean cruise control for under $50. Can't complain about that!

brake sensors are ~$40 and i think you have to take off the steering wheel and the airbag to install the controls. You can ask mcguyver_3 to help you with the install.

According to this thread,

The brake switch is only $6. I sent an email to Andrew @ Oakville Mazda to quote me a price.

Oakville Mazda is asking $27 for the brake switch. That's with the TM3 discount.

your going to install it yourself?

I think so. From what I understand, so long as you disconnect your battery, and pump the brake to purge the lines, there's not too much risk in having the airbag deploy. I'm pretty handy, so I think I can probably figure it out and save the $85 labour charge.

as long as your airbags don't deploy your good

ya that price on that forum is incorrect for the brake switch... good luck with the install just make sure you disconnect your battery!

Thanks for your help on answering my questions and providing pricing Andrew. I will likely come see you for the part, however, I think I can do the install myself as it seems pretty straightforward.

So, I just did this install and it doesn't seem to be working.
As I said, the switches were from a 2006 and the brake switch is new for a 2007. Is this the problem? Are the two not compatible with each other?

Everything should be in working order. You picked up this brake switch right?
Part number BN7N-66-490 (check the number on the switch)
I've ordered switches before that had been swapped out with a non cruise brake switch. They look identical.

Yes that's the part I have and the switches were from a 2006 on eBay. The cruise light on the dash doesn't come on but the steering switches are illuminated. I'm stumped.

Hmm...weird I'm assuming you checked all the connections? Maybe the cruise switch on the steering wheel is faulty?

Well, given that the audio controls and horn work, I imagine that the wiring harness was properly inserted, and the additional 2 wires connected.
My brake lights work as before, so the brake switch should be properly installed. The only thing I can figure having read some of the posts near the bottom of this thread:
http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=45816.150
... is that with 2007+ you do need the newer part number even though both parts appear identical and will physically fit.
If someone has successfully installed a 2004-2006 component into a 2007+ car, please let me know, then I'm almost certain something is wrong with my switch. Otherwise, guess I'll be selling it to a wrecker and trying to find the right part.

The brake light switch part number is the same from 04-09. So did you actually look on the switch itself to make sure it said BN7N?

Not yet, I will, but I remember comparing it to my stock switch.
The stock switch had 2 electrical contacts. The new one had 4, which I've heard means it is cruise-ready.

If it's not the actual brake light switch I would then point to the actual cruise switch.

If anybody has a 2004-2006 and lives in the K-W/Guelph area and is interested in having cruise installed, let me know. I would like to see if this part works or is faulty. Perhaps we could meet up, and install it in your car, and if it works, I'd let it go for $35.

Wow I almost bought that same switch hahaha.... but I was hesitant cuz I didn't want to buy a faulty one... do you think it's just not compatible with your 2007? I might consider buying it off you if I can be sure it would work on my 05...
EDIT just saw your post... I was going to get mcguyver to install cruise for me as soon as I found the steering switches... it'd be in TO though.

Once I find an 07 compatible switch, I will remove this 06 switch from my steering wheel. You can take it for $35 and have mcguyver install it. If it turns out it doesn't work, I'll give you your money back and try to get a refund from the ebay seller. What do you think?

I just followed the exact instructions you posted and it worked beautifully in my 05 Sport GS. I paid $45 at a local auto wreckers for a steering wheel (with controls) and the brake switch. On your brake switch, is there 2 wires or 4 wires running to it? At the wreckers, the first Mazda 3 we were looking at was a sedan without cruise, and it only had 2 wires to the brake switch, which means you can't install cruise on it (not sure what trim it was, as there wasn't much of the car left). Mine had 4 wires, but on the brake switch i took out of my car, the middle 2 were blanks.
Aberg83, did you figure it out yet? My parents live in Guelph, and I can give you a shout next time I go home and take a look at your setup.
